Who'd Northeastern have to lick (in a gender-neutral sense) to move up from 5 to 4 without anyone playing a single game?

Kinda hard to judge but I'd say we'll be looking at 8 or 9 when we open.

This is the highest we have been in the initial poll since 4th in 2007.

FWIW, CHN has us at #9.
Thanks.

Here is their prediction and the Cornell blurb:
 1. Minn-Duluth
 2. Denver
 3. Minn-Mankato
 4. Notre Dame
 5. BC
 6. Massachusetts
 7. Providence
 8. Penn State
 9. Cornell
10. Clarkson

Ravaged by injuries for most of the 2018-19 season, Cornell still enjoyed a remarkable year. A regular-season ECAC title, playoff championship game appearance and NCAA tournament bid (and one win) were all well-earned. And most of the players that made Cornell successful last season return to Ithaca for another chance to get the Big Red back to the Frozen Four. Mitch Vanderlaan was an important presence for Cornell even if his production is ultimately replaceable. Morgan Barron will be looked upon to make a leap offensively. Matt Nuttle and Alex McCrea played big minutes on the blue line and will be missed, but Yanni Kaldis, Alex Green and goalie Matt Galajda return. And Mike Schafer has repeatedly shown an ability to plug and play with his lineup and system. This year will be no different.

It's interesting that we made jumps from the final 2019 poll in both USCHO (8 to 5) and USA Hockey (10 to 5) while nobody else did except BC. Maybe it signifies us holding our place while other schools lost significant strength and dropped below us. Maybe it indicates that we have a larger number of players who are expected to blossom. It could be the freshman class but while they look strong I don't think they are that heralded.

We start the season fifth in the polls. Same argument as previous years: Cornell plays hard and sometimes moves up. Cornell doesn't play - late start to the season, or over the semester break - and we always move up. Plus no injuries with that strategy. In those no-games periods, maybe ESPN can create Deepfake games where we play Harvard and win every one in an exciting come from behind.

ECAC teams seem to struggle in early games against power conference opponents. For Ivies this makes sense -- Ivy game n is often non-Ivy opponent's game n + 4. Those differences are most pronounced early. It doesn't explain non-Ivy ECAC members' struggles.

USA polls aren't out yet. At least not on USCHO yet.

We've moved up to 4 in USA Hockey. No first place votes. Yet.

Edit: That was last week as I continue my freefall into senility.

ECAC teams seem to struggle in early games against power conference opponents. For Ivies this makes sense -- Ivy game n is often non-Ivy opponent's game n + 4. Those differences are most pronounced early. It doesn't explain non-Ivy ECAC members' struggles.

Isn't the differential 7? Ivy limit 29, ECAC limit 32, others limit 36? Or am I remembering wrong? Denver's already 4 games in.

IINM the differential now is 5 (29/32/34*) but not all of that is expended by early games. Factory schools also work in an extra weekend during the season, probably with a shorter winter break.

* The games in Alaska may still not count towards the limit in which case those conferences' limit is effectively 36.

USA Polls list CU Men and Women at #5. Hopefully the results will make the USCHO page soon.

The ECAC does not have a 32-game limit. I vaguely recall that there was such a limit at one time, but the non-Ivy ECAC schools can and do play 34 games. I am pretty sure that the Alaska exemption still exists.

I thought that the mandatory break was an NCAA rule, but that could be the ECAC.

Tied to Xmas/New Years or each school's exam schedule? For example, Dartmouth had (has?) trimesters so their exam schedule was (is?) all sorts of fucked up.

I like that Clarkson did not play and moved 12 to 11 while Q did not play and moved 11 to 13.

Q tied Brock U. on Sunday in the last minute of the third with an extra attacker. (After RPI dominated Brock on Saturday.)
Well, that sucks, because it's a perfectly reasonable explanation. :-(

But RPI didn't make the list. ;-)

Yes, but RPI and Cornell fans can also enjoy Union losing on Saturday and Sunday.banana

Union is now perfect on the year. The Union football team is 6-0 and the Union hockey team is 0-6.

Wow! It’s not so unexpected that we’re #3; we’re undefeated, after all. But the fact that a school that doesn’t even exist ranks #7 is truly impressive.

Look, it's the USA poll. 'nuff said!

Where did you find a USA Hockey link with the votes? When I checked both USA Hockey and USCHO there was a table empty except for the school name. I wasn't even sure it was the real poll.

nm, the numbers now show on the USA site. Didn't before. Weird.

That's exactly what happens with me, but only one of the reasons I hate their polls.

if we can hold off not playing for another 2-3 weeks we could probably get to first place

If we can play nothing until April, we could wind up #1 and win the NC!

2nd undefeated season!
When would we take possession of the belt?

While Qunnipiac can never be counted out based on recent history, they seem to have taken a step back this year and may be a tad (or more) overrated.

Sure. But I thought pairwise was supposed to be completely objective math. Doesn't the fact that the two sites have different pairwise rankings mean that one is doing the math wrong?

FWIW, USCHO has our RPI @ 0.5875, and CHN has it @ 0.7075. If USCHO had the same result, we’d be #2 on USCHO too.

brown a good solid team to start at home with.
* Yann Denis back for a fifth year and a shot at the Hobey, perhaps.
* Or maybe some recruits who got confused and mistook Brown for Providence ...
* The way the occasional Cornell aspirant looks to Mount Vernon, Iowa, as entree to the Ivies

Brown's GK, Gavin Nieto, also put up some pretty impressive figures last weekend: 57 saves/60 shots, 93.4% save percentage, and 2.03 GAA.

In contrast, Galajda saved 45/49 shots, with a 91.8% save percentage, and 2.00 GAA.

This is a strange feeling. Normally after a win, and especially after a weekend sweep, I’m banging the refresh button on the PWR and KRACH pages like a coked out lab rat, just to see how much we climbed. Right now, when we’re #1 in everything, it almost takes some of the joy....nah, can’t say it with a straight face. THIS IS AWESOME!

The Cornell men and women are now a combined 13-0-1 overall, 9-0-1 in conference.

Harvard's are 10-0-0 in each.

Well, between now and the end of Xmas break, we play Q, P-ton, BU, (13) Harvard, (11) tOSU, and (10) Providence/Army.

Hahvad plays RIP, (16) BC, BU, (<= 3) us, Colgate, and 2xASU.

We've got the tougher path, but H always has trouble with those pesky prols from the other side of the river.

Our SOS currently ranks 8th, while Sucks ranks 30th.

Hopefully, we'll see some separation.

Signs that Harvard and Cornell will regress: the Crimson's shooting percentage (18.2%) is first in the country, and the Big Red's (15.8%) is second. Meanwhile, Harvard's save percentage (96.2%) is far and away number one in the nation. Cornell's (92.6%) is tied for tenth, though that is in line with Galajda's and Cornell's historical save percentages, and so may not regress much if at all.

The shooting % regression will be largely due to playing stronger competition. But I think both Harvard and Cornell will continue to have a number of 5 and 6 goal games against the lighter weights in the ECAC. I think there’s a larger than usual gulf between the top 3 teams and the rest of the conference this season.

Why? Just because 8 of the bottom 16 teams in KRACH are from the ECAC?

I don't feel like looking this up for Harvard, but Cornell is absolutely dominating even strength shot attempts thus far. Even vs Clarkson they had a substantial advantage. IIRC the only game where Cornell didn't have a clear edge was game 1 vs MSU (basically even). That shooting percentage probably is unsustainable, but at least it's backed up by measurable signs of possession dominance.

One thing I've always wondered is how much team shooting percentage is a function of luck in college hockey. The talent differentials are much larger in D-I than in the NHL. It's possible Cornell's shooting % is huge in part because the teams they've been playing haven't been very good, so the shooters have had better looks and a lot more time.

do the numbers show the shooting % on quality chances cause thats what matters more.. you get the random game of long range tip ins and screen shots that go in but thats more luck. the open shots from inside the circles is more what you can control, at least you hope you can.

so far we are getting a good number of open looks. you might not get as many against better teams, but you better bury some of them when you get so many against the lesser teams and so far we have,

the passing has been great so far to free guys up.

I agree though after the top 3 it drops off pretty fast. if that holds true you have to win most of those games and we only have 3 against harvard/clarkson left. then who is in the next tier? really want to win all those games against the bottom 6. dart/rpi/quin can you avoid more than a couple losses against those 3? now we want to sweep clarkson and that leaves Harvard.
