With sadness I pass along the news that Dan Lodboa passed away on Saturday, May 11. I actually received the news Sunday from a former Cornell teammate of Dan's, but was waiting until the info was public or posted first by Cornell.

Dan provided many great memories for Cornellians in my time on the hill.

IIRC, Ned said Dan was the best player he’d ever coached.

His legendary hat trick in the 3rd period of the 1970 NCAA championship game cemented the only undefeated season in NCAA history.

He added so much to my own student experience, to that of my classmates, and to formation of a culture that continues to enrich the lives of generations of Cornellians. Not the least, on this forum.

I hope next season they honor him some special way.

Like by winning the frickin' NCAA championship.

Too bad his obit photo wasn't the one taken in Lake Placid in March 1970. That's how he should be remembered. What Lodboa accomplished in the last period of his last college hockey game was extraordinary: three goals in seven minutes of the third period, the GWG with Cornell two men short. Lodboa was born too late to be an ESPN Highlights Top Ten, but today he'd competing against three must-have slam dunk clips, a couple more three-pointers, and the special-kid team manger who gets in the last minute of his senior year and proceeds to sink five treys. He's the school hero for a week then everybody goes back to stealing his lunch money.

Great idea. Mitch Vanderlaan, our current #14 is graduating. So all next season, players, coaches, fans, we all wear black armbands with #14 in red.

Actually, thinking about this some more, here's some additional ideas. Next season, 2019-2020 will end with the 50th anniversary of the only undefeated season in the history of men's college hockey. So what if the armbands I described were a bit fancier and sold for, say, $10 each. (With the asshole's tariffs, we'll probably need a rich alum to donate them so we can sell them that cheaply.) Maybe they can even auction off game-worn armbands.

The team -- I think probably both the Dryden-less 1970 champions and the 2019-2020 team would together decide on a charity to honor the 1970 team and Dan. Wouldn't that be great, both the current and greatest teams working together like that? Maybe Dan's family would be involved too. Proceeds for the armbands would go to the charity. Perhaps there would be two: one to honor Dan and one to honor the entire team. Not sure.
