It’s nice to have a short thread to discuss the day. Let’s do that here, with the exception of the most important game, of course.

Let’s hope that ASU takes down Q today. I can easily cheer for Clarkson, and I even found myself pulling for Harvard briefly yesterday, but I hate, hate the Bobcats and all they stand for.

The other game in our regional should provide very good intel on whether we can hang with Mankato. (Remember that?)

And at 9 EST, go AIC!

+1. I can root for Harvard (or even Gaudet-coached Dartmouth if it came to it) in the NCAAs without reservation, but I hate even having Quinnipiac Marketing, Inc. associated with the ECAC. The sooner they're out, the better. (Which means that all the hopes of the ECAC rest with Cornell now, as far as I'm concerned.)

Well, if we end up playing the Mavericks, our defensemen are really going to have to watch their zone exits.

Minnesota State guy gets a deserved 5 min major and DQ, and Providence strikes immediately to take the 4-3 lead. Still over 3:30 left on the PP.

BTW, I think the woman doing the PBP is quite good.

Well, neither Cornell nor Northeastern will need to worry about that, as Providence has scored 6 unanswered (including an empty net)

Deserved five. An embellishment wouldn’t have been outside the realm of possibility.

It helps to be the #4 seed home team!

Why does she say "shot on net" when the shot misses the net? And ESPNews repeating the same intermission feature both intermissions? smashfreak

D

I mostly liked the job she did, but sometimes she seemed unprepared. Example: "That shot is blocked by....a Providence player" and I really didn't like lines like "They pull the goaltender because it's win to stay in, here in the NCAdouble tournament!!" in the middle of an ongoing play.

A general comment on NCAA Day 2. With such a full slate of games, this is always one of my favorite days of the year, and when your team turns in one of the best-played games of the year, it's such a high.

i hope the ESPN hockey "draft expert" is getting royalties every intermission when they replay the same interview. really lazy programming by espn. Wasn't there anyone available the could have done game analysis - game previews for the regaionals?

** Nitpick ** i'm not a fashionista by any stretch and I am darn lucky to have a job where I can wear jeans, t-shrits and sweatshirts. However who dressed the "draft expert"? a three year old? dark blue polka dot shirt does not go with dark brown jacket. ** Nitpick off ***

I just watched that and every time he mentioned someone, I found myself saying, "He's out of the tournament, he's out of the tournament, he's out of the tournament."

Q outshooting ASU 3-1. It’s not over but I hope that this puts to rest the ASU story. Unfortunately Q is the beneficiary and if AIC beats Denver, Q may have had the easiest way to the FF of any team that I can remember.

The second penalty on Morgan Barron was a joke. Davies completely embellished. Replay clearly showed he was pushed, not driven into the boards. Should have been a dive, Not surprised he was back on the ice right off the bat for the PP.

Impressive effort. Balanced scoring. Think we dictated our game and wore them down. Madden overhandled the puck and his cross-ice passes were repeatedly deflected. Primeau is a really solid goalie, may have had an off night on 1-2 of those goals.

Ya. Denver - AIC is for a trip to the Frozen Four. Denver drew first blood and leads 1-0.

But then AIC. So that would be 2/3 fairly easy teams to get to finals.

Denver just scored so it may be moot.

As an aside I’m finding it hard to root for anyone in the Q-ASU game. If Q wins, then root for Q or Duluth? Q I guess?

Agreed. I couldn't believe the officials were considering a major, when they should have been considering embellishment.

No contest. I've had a soft spot for UMD since hanging out with their fans at the F4 in Boston 15 years ago. I was torn in the BGSU-UMD game though, since I want to see the holdouts and refugees that make up the rump WCHA succeed in the national stage.

AIC's season comes to an end. They hung with DU until late in the second period and then a goal in the 3rd by a denver forward with tenacious forechecking.

UMASS v. Denver in one semi-final matchup.

I'm definitely rooting for Duluth. Q is probably my second most-disliked team in the ECAC.

But if we win and get a rematch against Q, that wouldn't bother me in the least.

My original post was completely off. Somewhere I thought I saw that if Q won they would play the AIU-Denver winner.

That was wrong and the brackets now show Denver-UMass and the winner of our game plays the Q-UMD winner.

Oh well.

Attendance at various sites in Regional SF/f

Manchester 5033/5679
Fargo 4220/4248
Providence 7180/5231 (Did 2000 Northeastern fans not come back?)
Allentown 3763/3561

Is the attendance in Allentown bad enough that the NCAA should regret not putting Cornell there?

Could have put tOSU there with only a 1 value seed difference throwing ASU to Fargo. Notre Dame switch was possible too.

If you can get by the limited free article pay wall you can read what is essentially a footnote that the TU Center plans to bid for regional hockey.

The arena also will submit bids for all Division I basketball events, regional hockey and volleyball.

I seem to remember reading Allentown was only a two-year deal.

And you have to imagine the PPL Center is not thrilled with losing two potential weekend home games. The Phantoms sell out on the weekends.

I'd love it if they stopped putting regionals in the Dakotas and had them someplace more civilized (and easier to get to). Might I suggest Colorado Springs?

Denver would be more practical from a transportation perspective, though. Although I suppose you still need to charter a bus to get the team to and from the arena.

Supposedly it will be announced before the FF - or maybe at the FF. My understanding is, there's not too many places on the list.

Yes Jeff - 2-year deal. But now it's time for new deals.

I've also heard there's a Colorado location in the mix - though neither Denver or Colorado Springs.

Which was met by universal raspberries on USCHO. I'd never heard of it. It aint Durango, unfortunately.

Now that there is a program at ASU Phoenix should get into the mix he said with no ulterior motive.

Attendance at various sites in Regional SF/f

Manchester 5033/5679
Fargo 4220/4248
Providence 7180/5231 (Did 2000 Northeastern fans not come back?)
Allentown 3763/3561

Is the attendance in Allentown bad enough that the NCAA should regret not putting Cornell there?

Considering that next year's regional won't be there, I don't think they'll give it a second thought.

I believe the Regional may be there again next year.

I sure wish they would announce where they will be for next year.

Adam, do you know when they will make their decision?

Supposedly it will be announced before the FF - or maybe at the FF. My understanding is, there's not too many places on the list.

Four?

Edit: I'm sorry, I assume on rereading this that you mean there aren't too many on the list of potentials for the four spots.

That's the problem with complaining about Allentown. You can only have a Regional in a place that applies.

Jim, can you find that $444K or whatever article that you showed me for us to read here? I didn't read the whole thing and it would be of interest for all the NC$$ guys to add more grist to the mill.

AHL arenas in the (broadly defined) "midwest" with capacity in thousands):

18 Cleveland
17 Rosemont, IL (near Chicago)
15 Des Moines, IA
11 Grand Rapids, MI (has been used, a great barn)
11 Hershey, PA
10 Milwaukee
08 Allentown, PA
08 Wilkes-Barre, PA
06 Rockford, IL

Hell, put one in the Toronto burbs. It would be a blast.

Here's a fun (2011) map of D-1 programs (as a reminder to dump Q and add RIT).

FYP. :P The ROC is west of Wilkes-Barre and Allentown, but then so is Ithaca.

It was only $440 K.

The authority guaranteed the NCAA it would make $440,000 in ticket sales from the tournament. The NCAA, in turn, agreed to pay the authority’s expenses of $360,000. The authority makes its money, an estimated $150,000 to $180,000, from ancillary sales, such as parking and concessions, which will include this year, for the first time at an NCAA tournament, beer and wine sales.

not sure what's wrong with Colorado - I'd love it. Especially since I'm trying to convince my wife to move there. ... As for ASU - I've also heard they will bid once they have their own arena - but it's possible they will bid to host in Vegas before that. Maybe a Regional maybe a FF. All speculative at this point - but I know they are at least thinking about it.

I've also heard there's a Colorado location in the mix - though neither Denver or Colorado Springs.
Which was met by universal raspberries on USCHO. I'd never heard of it. It aint Durango, unfortunately.

It's Loveland. Home of the AHL Colorado Eagles - a 7200 seat arena.

But let's face it. Loveland is not in the pretty part of Colorado.

I didn't realize there was an unpretty part of Colorado until I went to Aurora. It's Nassau County with better looking people.
