Second verse. Same as the first?

dreadfully bad TO late in the first leads to a tie game.. those are the simple mistakes that have to be corrected.

Colgate is utterly incapable of creating offense. Lucky for them, Cornell creates plenty for them. This is embarrassing.

We dominated the second period, the difference is a 20-second lapse with a bad turnover and a soft goal.

In before the Suicide Squad. We played extremely well for most of the game. A few mistakes and Mitch Benson standing on his head. Bah, but it happens.

Yup. If Benson were only playing great and not very great, we win that 4-2.

Yeah, Benson definitely kept the game close. Things just didn't look right after the tying goal, though. It's almost as if the play was more tentative. Maybe that was because of Colgate's more aggresive forecheck in the 3rd, but who knows

Colgate is hands-down the worst team we've played this season. Topher can talk all he wants about their defensive positioning or how strong the ECAC is but this was an absolutely terrible loss.

Cornell played well following the 2nd Colgate goal and their goalie stole it. But the first 80 minutes and 15 seconds this weekend were embarrassing.

Also, I can't recall the last time I've seen a Cornell team that looks dominant in OT. It's definitely been a while since any wins in the extra period.

Edit: 2016 in the playoffs against Union, so almost 3 years.

Interesting point: March 2016 in the QF clincher was the last OT win. Surprisingly, CU hasn't had many OT games the last 2 years. Two this season, and two last season. The last OT loss was December 2016.

Benson stole the game. He made three saves that were unbelievable and a bunch of other good ones. If he were only great, we would've won 4-2.

Somehow only dropped to 9th in PWR. I was expecting a much more dramatic fall.

To be fair, he was doing the “shhhh” gesture, not flipping the bird.

Still, it struck me that this was the first thing he thought to do after scoring a very big OT goal, and not, say, celebrate with his teammates standing 5 feet away.

It just goes to show how much a good student section gets into the heads to certain players. That game will probably go down as the highlight of Colgate's season.

Their biggest win vs Cornell since the Gilbert Gottfried announced game at Starr in 2003.

I believe that will go down as the only win over Cornell for the seniors on the team (providing they don't meet again in the playoffs).

I'm curious to see how Schafer handles the goalies going forward. I thought the 2nd Colgate goal was really pretty soft, even though he was screened a bit. Assuming he's healthy enough, I'd like to let Galadja carry us from here on out.

Mike has typically preferred one lead dog. McGrath had played very well and so he couldn't bench him in good conscience, but that changed this weekend. I think we'll see Matt take the wheel now.

It does. Also: Snodgrass is a freshman so I hope Section A makes a note to be particularly attentive to him in the years ahead.

he said he pulled McGrath because he didn't fight through the screen

Snodgrass is also lucky that not many Cornell students are studying Urology (at least not yet..) because Snodgrass is a very popular technique for repairing hypospadias. I can only imagine the taunts...

Or some people like being the heel. It didn't get into his head, he scored two goals. "We got to him" is a different creature than "he remembered who heckled him and made sure to rub it in."

Thx. Somehow the Gate roster I pulled up was 2017. My bad.

Yeah, by the rankings Colgate is by far the worst team Cornell has seen so far. RPI and SLU are likely worse than Colgate, but weirdly enough Cornell hasn't played them yet.

I only got to see the third period + OT of the game at Lynah, but it looked like Cornell could do whatever they wanted out there short of actually putting the puck in the net. They were so dominant on possession that it almost looked like the game was moving at 3/4 speed. The only real exceptions were the cases where Cornell made a mistake and had to scramble to recover. Despite their dominance it seemed like Cornell was making a lot of unforced errors out there, and it sounds like that was even worse earlier on.

No worries; I was quite fond of yelling "Snodgrass!" at him at games in Ithaca and Hamilton so I knew he'd been there for a few seasons :)

This was one of those split weekends -- we seem to have one every season -- in which we actually played better in the game we lost.

I'm not that worried about it. In the game notes he sends out Schafer said he thought the team looked pretty terrible in practice all week leading in and that the problems continued throughout Friday. He didn't enumerate specific issues though I think we're smart enough to figure out what he meant.

Suffice that we're good enough to beat anybody as a team, but not so good that we can't lose to anybody as individuals. This was particularly evident in how Gate's first line destroyed us. We have been fantastic neutralizing the other team's first line going back years. The last guys who burned us that badly were Yale's otherwordly lines with O'Neill, Miller, Agostino, Little, etc...

its not like that line created tons of chances but they scored on the few they got. that giveway sat not with under 10 secs to go in any period was just killer bad

Yep. Not one of the four Colgate lines had any ability whatsoever to create scoring opportunities on their own. I think all their goals last weekend came off great individual efforts or Cornell turnovers.
