New title :-) but I won't start a list till after Thursday. The wife tore a muscle above her knee replacement and has surgery this Thursday.

Here's last years list and if you know of changes, or if you know that it's the same, post it and I'll try and accumulate all the data and keep it up to date going forward. After Thursday I'll try going thru the old thread and grab what's been mentioned. But there are a lot of names that haven't been discussed. So if you know something, please post it, so I don't have to check all the rosters to see if an alum is still there.

Thanks

A few updates. Riley Nash now with Columbus (NHL), Alex Rauter with the Wheeling Nailers (ECHL), and Jacob McDonald with Florida (NHL). And it's the Worcester Railers, not Mailers, for Kubiak, Gillam and Tschantz.

I think this was already shared elsewhere on eLF, but Scrivens has apparently retired and is now Denver's team manager, in addition to being a master's student there: [denverpioneers.com]

Ryan, Joakim San Jose Barracuda (AHL)--10/12/17 San Jose Sharks (NHL)

Ryan is getting some ice time tonight in the Sharks/Kings game.

On the Sharks broadcast, the 2nd intermission featured Douglas "Crankshaft/Cranky" Murray as studio analyst. A bit stiff in his analyis (or delivery of it). I'm not sure if the talking head gig is permanent or if he will be a rotating analyst.

The calendar says it is football and hockey season, but it is still hot, humid with our daily dose of afternoon rain in Southwest Florida :(.

At first I too thought that Douglas was kind of stiff. But I listened to him a bit more and in the postgame show. He actually has a very dry and somewhat snarky sense of humor. He was kind of fun to listen too. He was just filling in for another person and so I am not sure how much more we will get to listen to him.

Joakim Ryan on the verge of losing his spot in the Sharks' lineup:

Throughout most of the first two months of the season, DeBoer cut his blue line down to five guys late in games, keeping Ryan pinned to the bench. He’s already showing more trust in Simek, and after Monday’s win, the Sharks coach made it clear that he wants Simek to lock down the job on a permanent basis.

Ryan displayed similar poise in that spot as a rookie last season, but he hasn’t played with enough assertiveness, in DeBoer’s eyes, this year to keep his grip on the job. As a result, the door opened up for Simek and he’s bursting through.

DeBoer is overplaying Karlsson, Burns and Pickles. Everyone needs to earn their ice time. Karlsson's ice time is down somewhat versus Ottawa, but you have multiple stud defensemen now. Ryan's ice time is down 5 minutes per game compared to last year. That's huge. I find it hard to believe that he's gotten worse.

I'd have Karlsson and Burns earn their way to 23-24 mins a night versus just handing them that time every game. Playing their 6th defenseman as little as they do (particularly in the 3rd period) is a good way to make a talented team a .500 team.

Karlsson isn't off to a very effective start in San Jose (understatement).

Went to the Lehigh Valley - Springfield game tonight here in Allentown. Jake MacDonald scored Springfield's only goal. Reece Willcox had two assists for LV and earned 2nd Star of the game.

I got aa couple dirty looks when I cheered when I heard MacDonald's name.

Truly fantastic response from Riley Nash on Twitter......directed at an individual who bemoaned the CBJs signing him

Riley's response

I saw Riley play Dec 23rd vs the New Jersey Devils. Played 7 minutes in a dominating 3-0 CBJ win. Tough to score when you're not on the ice much, you're on the fourth line, and your job is to dump the puck deep and not let the other team score. His numbers will change when his role changes.

A few recent updates from the AHL in alphabetical order:

-Anthony Angello is 5th in scoring for the W-B/Scranton Penguins with 15g, 10a in 47 games played. He's also bringing a lot of physicality to his game, with two fights already this season.

-Cole Bardreau has appeared in only 23 games for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms this year (injuries, perhaps?)

-Colin Greening has 13 points in 49 games for the Toronto Marlies, but is also unfortunately in possession of the lowest +/- on the team (-10).

-Jeff Kubiak has 4g, 10a in 34 games played for Bridgeport.

-Joel Lowry has 7g, 17a in 35 games played for Springfield.

-John McCarron received a PTO from the Stockton Heat and appeared in 1 game, but was released soon after.

-Jacob McDonald is the top scoring defenseman (and 5th leading scorer overall) for Springfield with 11g, 21a in 47 games played.

-Matt Moulson is leading the Ontario Reign in scoring with 21G, 19A in 44 games played.

-Reece Wilcox has 2g, 12a in 43 games played for Lehigh Valley.

-Trevor Yates appeared in 2 games for Grand Rapids back in November, but was sent down to the ECHL afterward.

Bardreau had hand surgery a couple months back. He'll out for a while yet.

Saw Bardreau at the rink last night (15 Feb.) in street clothes. Willcox (LV) and Kubiak (Bridgeport) on the ice, but neither one had any points.

Have to say I'm surprised that Jason Botterrill has not given Moulson a 3-5 game test stint as second line LW on the Sabres. Botterrill was in some ways a similar player to Moulson in college, probably more physical but less skilled (particularly with his shot). Nobody on the Sabres besides Jeff Skinner is producing. Sabres 2018-19 stats

Moulson looks like he's still competing (look at the horrendous +/- of many of his fellow forwards on the Reign, at Ontario Reign 2018-19 stats).

Second unit power play doesn't look to scary. https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/teams/buffalo-sabres/line-combinations/

SC Bern, despite finishing first in the National League (Switzerland's highest level of competition) regular season, currently has their hands full in their quarterfinal series against Genève-Servette HC. The series is even at two (with the visiting team winning each of the four games so far). SCB managed to blow 2-0 leads in games two and three, winning one in OT and losing the other in double OT, before hanging on to win 2-1 in game four last night. Justin Krueger got into the highlight reel of game three, but not in a good way, as he was used as a screen on the GWG: [mysports.ch] (about 1:30 in).

If you don't subscribe to the Athletic, you won't be able to read this story about Matt Moulson, but it's worth the money to do so. It's an in-depth story about how things went downhill for him in Buffalo and how he has rediscovered his love of hockey playing for the Kings' AHL team. It's got some interesting details about his wife and her role in giving him confidence to excel when he was playing for the Islanders. I also learned that Eichel stayed with the Moulsons during Eichel's first year in Buffalo. Matt comes across as a person with a lot of character.

Justin Krueger scored in SCB's 5-1 win over EHC Biel/Bienne in Game Seven of their semifinal series, a series which they trailed 2-0 and 3-1. To even get to Game Seven, Bern had to win Game Six 1-0 in Biel despite being outshot 38-19. Krueger's goal is at 1:44 of [mysports.ch] and 9:00 of [mysports.ch]

BTW, SCB did manage to take that quarterfinal series with Geneva in six games, but Game Six was the longest game in Swiss ice hockey history, with SCB taking a 2-0 lead into the final minute, only to give up two extra attacker goals before eventually winning the game 3-2 in triple overtime.

The best-of-seven finals between SCB and EV Zug (who won the multi-division Swiss Ice Hockey Cup this year, and finished second to Bern in the regular season) start Thursday in Bern.

Justin Krueger played his 400th game for SC Bern on Thursday, in SCB's 3-1 win on the road over EV Zug, which gave them a 3-1 lead in the championship series of the top league in Switzerland. There was apparently a ceremony to honor him before tonight's Game Six back in Bern:
... and SCB won the match 2-1 to become Swiss Champions for the third time in four years: [mysports.ch] [www.youtube.com]

There's a postgame interview with his father (former Swiss national team coach and recent manager of Southampton Football Club in the English Premier League Ralph Krueger). It's in German, but his Canadian accent might make it easier to follow: [www.youtube.com] [FWIW, he speaks German faster and better than I remember him doing 20 years ago. And considerably better than I do, of course.]

One other item of note: SCB's top scorer Marc Arcobello graduated from Yale in 2010 and kicked around the AHL and NHL for six years before landing in Bern. I assume there was some sort of Krueger connection in the recruiting there, either from his ECAC days or his cup of coffee in Edmonton, which overlapped slightly with Ralph K's year coaching the Oilers. (If I'm getting the timing right, Krueger coached Arcobello's first game in the show.)

Joakim Ryan '15 didn't have much ice time during the series, but the Sharks eliminated the Golden Nights last night, so Joakim joins Riley Nash of the Blue Jackets in the Stanley Cup second round.
I know this has been covered before, but which alumni besides Nash and Ryan played in the NHL this year? Just Moulson?

Far as I know, only those three. Would be nice to see some of the younger guys get some coffee next season.

I am very surprised Greening didn't stick. He seemed to be the classic example of a Manderville-like defensive forward who could have a long career.

Edit: He is 33, now. (Damn, we're getting old.) I guess that ship has sailed.

Interestingly, Joakim Ryan had only about 4 minutes of ice time in the first three periods last night, probably most of that if not all being in the first period. But, he was out there fairly regularly in overtime, ending with 9:34 played. And he was +1, being on ice for the game winner.

Ryan is actually one of the more underrated players on the Sharks. He just doesn't play a lot because that Top-4 is so good. Tough to get ice when you have 3-4 guys playing 25-30 minutes a night.

I noticed that, too, and second what coz said - but it was great to see him out there providing some relief for the doubtless-gassed top 4 and holding his own.

Ryan was actually on the ice for two goals last night. His D partner at the time, Justin Braun, got beaten for the first Colorado goal. In the second period Joakim was on the ice when Kevin Labanc gave the Sharks a 3-2 lead.

Ryan and the Sharks move on to round 3 with a 3-2 defeat of the Avs in game 7. They'll face the St. Louis Blues. Ryan's the sole remaining Cornellian in the Cup fight, as Riley Nash and the Blue Jackets dropped three in a row to the Bruins to lose 4 games to 2.

According to the Ivy League's tweet, Ryan is the only remaining Ivy Leaguer in the playoffs.

He is seeing limited playing time but, if IIRC (I can't find the stats to verify), not a single opponent's goal has been scored while he is on the ice.

And it seems that Krueger père will be returning to Western New York: [buffalonews.com]

From a companion article:

'When Ralph Krueger sought to find out more about the Sabres and the City of Buffalo, he went undercover in a handful of bars during a visit late last month.

The 59-year-old coach watched two Stanley Cup playoff games, switching venues at the conclusion of each period, and asked patrons about the team he could coach next season. The fact-finding mission revealed a passionate fan base in a city that embodies the blue-collar values he has instilled in players during his decades of coaching.

Krueger called the experience "enlightening," a visit that showed he and his wife, Glenda, they would feel comfortable calling Western New York home.'

Didn't know where else to put this.

Jim Crozier '91, played goalie, won the Sam Woodside Award in 1991, and was drafted 19th by the Hartford Whalers in the NHL supplemental draft. His son Tristan plays for Brown, and another son, Maxwell, was just drafted 120th by Tampa Bay. As a defenseman in the USHL, he scored 43 points in 60 games. He will be attending Providence College this fall. At least it's nice the two brothers can see each other regularly.

I agree with you're first two points. Ryan is definitely better off. He's in his prime now and his analytics have always been pretty good. LA is a good place for him since Martinez is the only Lefty that's for sure ahead of him on the depth chart as Forbort is garbage. Don't be surprised if he ends up playing 20 mins/G this year.
