I wonder if we will see Stewart tonight. Keep him sharp and a break for Matt.

Not a bad idea as long as it doesn't send the wrong message and the team takes RPI too lightly. They have played some teams tough- including Uniom and Ylae.demented

It's not as if Stewart is a creampuff. His numbers (1.01, .956) are actually better than Galajda's (1.61, .935).

I was wondering the same thing.

I think it's 60/40 Galajda / Stewart.

I think there's an argument to be made for resting him, but there's also one to be made for sending the message to Galajda and the team that they are going with Galajda for the time being. There's also the potential for a confidence boost pre-Clarkson if Galajda has a great game against RPI.

I do think it's a close call.

honestly. i think stewart is still the number 1 but Galajda has played too well to not keep him going. but i also wouldnt be surprised if they want to get stewart some work since he has been out for awhile

And it took Notre Dame OT to beat them 1-0. I was at that game and RPI busted ass the entire game. It's on RPI TV if you would like to check it out.

Gotta be careful. With Union in the rear-view mirror and Clarkson next Friday, there's a real danger of the team looking ahead and overlooking RPI. It's a potential trap game.

One has to hope that after last nights game, they will understand that you have to keep working for your wins. The other side doesn't hand them to you.

No Cam, no Malott, no rhythm. Ugly, ugly loss even with all of the chances in the third.

We don't take full advantage but Clarkson loses again.

Could be worse. So far it's only dropped us in the pairwise to #3.

Bigger problem is that good teams win the games they should, and this was certainly one of them. Thankfully, PU beat Clarkson, so we still have a 3-point lead over them in the ECAC standings. But we coulda, shoulda had a 5-point lead.

Even bigger problem, instead of getting better, we seem to be getting a late case of the injury bug that's plagued us every one of the past several years after the first of the year. cuss

We were bound to lose one we shouldn't.

I do think we looked a little jumpy in the third. Lots of chances, but a lot of rushes where we shot earlier than we needed to. We also got out worked or at least outhit early on. It's weird watching a Cornell team take this much of a beating.

Cam would've been very noticeable.

Was it injuries or residual flu?

Edit: not to take anything away from RPI, who played a great road game. We just missed a lot of pep.

I'm not saying it's the reason we lost, but the embellishment call on Rauter was ridiculous. Instead of a 5-3 it wound up 4 on 3, and of course RPI wound up scoring their shorty to go up 2-0.

Rauter got hit hard in the back, and fell forward onto the ice. I have no idea how that was ruled embellishment.

When do we get Malott back?

I think next week.

People around me (players families) suggested that Cam's shoulder hadn't really healed properly, i.e. maybe he came back too soon.

You'll also notice that neither Smith nor Vanderlaan played in the 3rd period. Injury bug, indeed.

I'm not happy about the loss, but if we were going to have to eat a loss, this was a great time on the calendar to do it. Not only does it make clear that literally *any* team can beat you on a given night if you don't give max effort, but it is deep enough into the season that the taste of it will remain fresh for the rest of the season.

Mike gets this. Makes me wonder if he was secretly hoping for a loss in the near future as an important teaching and motivation tool.

Schaefer, quoted by CHN

"RPI played hard throughout the course of the night, and we didn't respond well it. A little taste of a loss will go a long, long way for this hockey team."

Edit: read the Sun article after posting. Mike definitely knows what to do with this loss.

Schafer, in the Sun

“Give credit to RPI … they played hard,” Schafer said. “And we got to respond, you’ve got to overcome adversity.”

“[When] you’re winning games, maybe those lessons don’t get through to guys, and we’ve been pretty solid in our games up to this point, but we haven’t been good,” he said. “It’s a lesson [that] we all need to show up to play, we need to play hard [and] we need to play simple.”

The team has six days until a crucial road contest with No. 3 Clarkson, one that has broad implications for both the ECAC playoffs and the NCAA tournament.

“I’m thinking we better get our shit together this week,” Schafer said. “That’s what I’m thinking. I’m thinking that these guys better wake up.”

Is this true? I noticed Vanderlaan playing after he was down on the ice, I think in the second. Was he really gone for the third? And if Smith is hurt again, uh-oh sqaured.

Yes.. I don't remember when Smith left the ice... But he never returned.

He left after Hayhurst took the CTH-Elbowing penalty on him: 5:15 left in the 2nd period.

I know that Coach Schafer likes to go along with only one goalie, but I am sure some healthy competition is good for both Galajda and Stewart. As much as I value Galajda, I would like to see Stew on ice again. I really hope it's not injury that is impeding his chance.

Tricky proposition now. You don't want to undermine a GK's confidence by substituting after his first loss in months. OTOH, Stewart has also been excellent, and having two GK active might actually give them both a boost.

"Ya dance with the girl what brung ya." -- Ralph Kiner

We should see Galajda Friday and then, well, we'll see. That's assuming Stewart is even healthy, which has been an open question lately.

I'm happy with either. I really want to see Donaldson, Smith, and Malott back healthy as soon as possible.

BTW, Tschantz really busted his ass all game and should be recognized. It's a testament to how much the team has improved in his tenure that he's dropped from an average player to a healthy scratch.

It's hard to say what failed in the game, other than the amorphous "passion." It wasn't like Clarkson where we were outclassed, it was as if the whole team was deflated. Did they really rest on their laurels subconsciously? Were they looking ahead?

Anyway, it's a teachable moment. Beat Clarkson. Go Red!

The odds were slim that we (or anyone) would win out the rest of their games. I'll take the loss now. I would rather take a teachable loss now, than say, in the NCAA tournament.

its not as though we were outplayed.. out scored though.. i mean you get a first shift goal to get RPI some energy.. we have tons of chances, and then the get a Shortie where the puck just deflected to the perfect spot. we got the goal to get to 2-1 and probably missed 3-4 open net chances from inside 2-3 feet. Several games we got that goal and came back.. We still have multiple dominating shifts where the puck did everything but go in. Who though we would win 25-30 in a row to win out? Lets win the ECAC, get to at least Placid and then come what may in the NCAA. This team has flaws but it gives itself chances every game but one this year..
