16 hrs from cornell.. one good days drive.. vs $250-$300 to fly from around here

Agree, I'd probably drive, hate airports, but I'm also crazy and love to drive.

Yet I bought our tickets last week on Southwest and plan to hook up with a high school friend who will probably extol Minnesota's superiority.

Pathetically Parenthetically , has anyone else here noticed the number of B1G schools in the top 20? Since their inception as a league they have had approximately exactly zero (0) Frozen Four appearances. Maybe this will be the year they break the ice.smashfreak

When Minnesota made the championship game in 2014, that was in the first year of the Big Ten.

Right now PSU isn't even in the tournament,

FWIW, if North Dakota falls into the 4-band, someone from the east will go to Sioux Falls, because St. Cloud can't play NoDak in the first round. So just in case, go Sioux!

Nazi Dakota is currently 12. Plenty of time for both they and Pedo State to drop out of the tourney altogether.

you haven't considered that we might get assigned to allentown, in which case they will definitely have made the tournament

I decided to put up the entire PWR, so people could see how poor our SOS truly is, and possibly explain why we still have to prove something to fans, myself included, and media.

Our OOC opponents are underlined, but not bolded. The highest is BU just above Miami, who is the second from the bottom NCHC team.

5/12 of the ECAC teams are in the top half, but 3 of those are in the bottom 4 of the top half. 2 of the ECAC teams are in the bottom 4 of all teams.

We are a good team and if we can beat Clarkson sometime, Union at least once, and get to the ECAC finals, I'll be really happy and a believer. If not, I'll be happy and believe next year should be even better.

I'll put up the rest once the polls are released.

There's still plenty of hockey to be played before getting too comfortable. The ultimate goals is win the Frozen 4, not win a USCHO poll (which we all know is BS and pointless).

Between just Notre Dame and Cornell (the two teams getting almost all the #1 votes), I think Cornell has a good argument for being the #1 ranked team. We haven't beaten great teams, but we also haven't lost to bad teams. Can you really rank a team that's lost to Sacred Heart at home above Cornell at this point in the season?

Their position as #1 in the polls is definitely tenuous, but I think they have a good argument to be there at this point in time. They have done what teams with a weak strength-of-schedule need to do: have a winning percentage over 9% higher than everyone else.

This was the same week we tied Ottawa at home, currently 12-12 against Canadian teams.

Ottawa pulled the goalie and scored on one of its 13 shots.. much like the first Miami a totally dominating game we let get away..

I dont know if we are the best either.. Still I have seen NorthEastern play in person and we are better than them and they are 11th so if we are top 10 quality and have by far the best record who is to say? I think there are a dozen teams with probably a bit more elite skill guys on offense, but are those teams as well rounded every night which is the one thing you can say about this team so far, the Clarkson game being the one blemish to showing up every night and giving your self a shot to win.

Never thought I'd see this day in my lifetime.

There's still plenty of hockey to be played before getting too comfortable. The ultimate goals is win the Frozen 4, not win a USCHO poll (which we all know is BS and pointless).

This. FF is all that matters, not anything before then.

Winning the ECAC title also matters.

And how bout winning 2 regional games? Snake bit since that great win over BC in '03!

Winning the Frozen Four kinda guarantees we win two regional games right?

@CU2007- If we win the national title, you'd actually be upset if we lost the ECAC title along the way?

Let's keep our eyes on the prize, people.

Not at all, but if we don’t - it would be nice to hang an ECAC championship banner. My point is that both matter, not that a national championship wouldn’t make up for losing in the ECACs

Until Ottawa is accepted into Division I they are irrelevant.

Worth noting that a week ago in Potsdam, Harvard and Dartmouth put nine past Kielly into the Clarkson net. They managed one this weekend playing a not-very-heathy Cornell team at home.

I'm not following what there is to be skeptical about. PWR is math. The polls are just a bunch of old white dudes' opinions like ours'.

If you doubt the metrics capture an underlying objective value, well, yeah -- I'm sure they don't, but that loose coupling of the indicator and the indicated is always with us; it didn't just pop into being when we got to be #1.

You are what your record says you are, and right now, despite a lousy SOS on the PWR, despite EZAC bias from the polls, we are #1. By definition, that means... we are #1.

C'est une pipe.

We all know how rare this is, to be very good, to have everything going right, and not to have some immovable Dread Obstacle like RPI '85 or Harvard '89 in our path. There was no last year; there will be no next year. Time has stopped. This year hangs as a motionless pendulum in empty space. It's the whole universe from now until the Summer.

Yeah, but what is math? Our #1 ranking says that we are doing almost as well as possible against a mediocre slate. That doesn't make it *not* a mediocre slate and it isn't nuts to be skeptical. Blind obedience to the machines is the crazy path here when we know the inputs and are identifying the issues with them. It's not like we're mumbling about intangibles.

Well, I too am almost 55 and just got off the elliptical :-P. But I’m also a cancer survivor who can stand to lose a few pounds, and I’d like to see Cornell win a team championship in an NCAA sport (sorry, polo team) before I kick. I was there in Foxboro in 2009 for the game that shall not be named, and this year’s team at least gives us a chance to dream. There are some very good teams out there, but I don’t see anything like Maine with Paul Kariya on the horizon.

We have a solid and deep team, and hopefully will get Green and Malott back soon—I thought we were running out of gas at the end of the Dartmouth game. If we can maintain our health and stay aggressive on offense, I think we can be in the mix.

If we don't get Green back (no reason to think we wouldn't, as far as I know), we are in huge trouble. Mallott is a great player, but we are way deeper at forward.

Re: rankings, expectations, etc.: yeah, Cornell isn't the best team in the country. The team with the #1 ranking, only twenty games into the season, rarely is. In addition to the small sample size it has to work with, the PWR is imperfect in how it doesn't take into account score differential, or lucky bounces, or injuries. And even if we were the best team going into the NCAAs, our chances of winning it all would be, what, 1-in-8?

What our amazing start affords us is an opportunity--we have positioned ourselves to make a run, in the ECAC and in the NCAA. That's all you can ask for going into a single-elimination hockey tournament. Expecting anything more than that is just setting yourself up to be disappointed. In the end, it will be the Friday and Saturday nights at Lynah, not any number of championships, that we look back on most fondly.

Actually, most of the Friday and Saturday nights at Lynah moosh into each other over time. (Except for, off the top of my head, vs. Harvard in fall '95; vs. Vermont in fall '96; vs. Princeton in winter '94; etc.) It's the nights at other schools' rinks that are burned into my head. Many of my favorite memories from days on the Hill burnish following the team on the road and the resultant hijinks to a nostalgic sheen.

How about #1s at the start of the NCAAs?

Since the 16-team tournament began in 2003, the #1 overall seed has won the championship four times: Wisconsin in 2006 (screw you, Brian Elliott!), BU in 2009, BC in 2012, and Denver last year. That may not correspond with #1 in the polls at the start of the NCAAs, but who cares what humans think anyway.

by that math odds say it has to happen some time.

Odds don't work that way. The law of large numbers simply says it's extremely likely to happen sometime.

I'm going to just enjoy this week.... Knowing, full well, that things could be different as soon as next week. So, pardon me while I put my "Live at Lynah" CD back on & enjoy the ride... I'll check back next week for a re-charge, thank you......

Speaking of... isn't it about time the band did another one? We need to immortalize Knights of Cydonia before The Kids (TM) start playing Arctic Monkeys, shoe gaze or some such shit.

We can't get them to stop playing Macho Man. Why should we worry about them not playing something from their generation?

Arctic Monkeys and shoe gaze are from way before the current brats' generation. By definition, if we have heard of anything they are listening to it's the equivalent of the Osmonds.

Don't hold your breath. Apparently that's Galajda's song now. He was all smiles when the alumni band played it at Yale.

Hey, if it makes Matt feel comfortable then we play Lady of Fucking Spain at every stoppage. If he's happy, we're happy.

Am I the only one who likes Macho Man MORE because everyone else is ticked off by it? (Also, I was at that SLU game so I'm allowed to do the mocking gestures.)

That video is about "Lady of Spain," with which I'm familiar. But that's not what you said. The song you named sounds more interesting.

But thanks anyway, as it's been a long time since I've watched Slap Shot. Excellent memory you have there.

I've always assumed his reaction indicates a scene that was cut. Yes, he's been in enough rinks to hate the sound of the synthesized barrel organ, but even so, Reg seems to be recalling something very specific.

Like everyone else on this forum, I'm thrilled that we're #1 but also skeptical about the ranking's accuracy.

One thing I'd really like to see is our powerplay being more effective. Currently we're ranked #41 at 16.7%, but with our offense being ranked #9 I don't see why we shouldn't be at least in the top 25, which would require at least 20%. Your thoughts?

IIRC, we started out really well, holding above 30% for the first few weeks. Then, when the PK hit a rough spot, the PP % started falling as well. The PK has recovered, but not the PP. Really, the 5x5 play has buoyed the offense all season, which is a difference in past teams. The best teams in the Schafer era have always been strong on special teams. It's one of those things that makes me a bit nervous.

Edit: It's an even scarier picture when you only look at conference games. The PP% in ECAC games is only 11.7%, ranking #11 out of 12. Eek. But the ECAC PK% is 90%, the best in league play.

Not to mention this team hasn't scored more than 3 goals in a game in nearly a month, but they're still hanging in the Top-10 for GPG.

Malott spent a decent amount of time on the PP before he got hurt, no? Could account for at least some of the difference.

Watching most of the games, I've really liked how our PP has looked. This is very subjective, but I think we're getting better chances than the results suggest. Unlike some of our recent years, where our PP has looked ugly.

It seems this Cornell hockey team succeeds because of a team and teamwork rather than being borne upon the backs of a few superstars. This conflicts with current team sports wisdom, or at least current sports reporting, where superstars are the cause success and failure. This attitude is reflected in (or a partner to) the current opinion that the efforts of a few political superstars is responsible for the success or failure of government.

My guess: in 2003 they were #1 in one poll and #2 in the other, and in the 60s and 70s they didn't have polls. No idea if either of those things are right. Actually, the most likely is that USCHO is incorrect.

They didn't get all the first place votes in 2003. I guess they do not recognize the polls from the Archaic Age.

Cornell and St. Cloud swap spots. Men drop to #4 still receiving 7 first place votes. Not a whole lot of spread in the top four. Quickly drops off in a tight race for #5 and #6, then the rest of the field.

Women are up to #5.

It is accurate. The women's tournament is a "national collegiate" championship, which means that Division II schools are technically eligible.

I think this is wonderful and they should place the D3 mens champion in the D1 tourney draw.

but trying to switch to Comparison layout is all screwy.
Hopefully they'll correct it.

It is accurate. The women's tournament is a "national collegiate" championship, which means that Division II schools are technically eligible.

Thanks, I was confused since St. Anselm has not recently been on prior top PWR. However, since you jogged my memory, I do remember seeing them on other PWR. How they suddenly reappeared is interesting. If they work up to a top 4 seed, wow. Only Div 1 teams played were Holy Cross and Sacred Heart. Hopefully your reference is correct, and they can be moved down. But whichever team they displace will be mad.

I expected Mankato to run all the way to #2. I dare say they deserve it.

Still #2 in both polls. Not that it matters, but any thoughts as to why Notre Dame (#2 in PWR via their better RPI vs Cornell) still haven’t convinced the voters (#5 in USCHO; #4 in USA Today, who by now usually buy into the computer numbers.

They've lost four of their last five. That's not a small thing.
