It appears that the team has also picked up a commitment from Willow Slobodzian, formerly a UND commit. She played for the Canadian U-18 team for the three game series against the USA this past summer. She was going to enroll at UND this fall. I'm not sure if she will be able to get through admissions for the 2017-18 season or if she'll be in the 2018-19 recruiting class.

Article on Micah Hart trying for the 2018 Olympics.

“One thing I knew about Cornell Hockey from the moment I stepped on campus for the first time is that it is a program built on pride and tradition. We have a wall up in our rink hallway that has framed pictures of all the male players that have played in the NHL, and then all the female players that have played on the Women’s National Team.

Every time I go to the rink I look up at that wall and feel a sense of pride seeing those players up there. Being able to look at those photos now, and know that I have the opportunity to carry on that tradition of excellence gives me indescribable pride and motivation.”

It sounds like a great pick up. A relatively young guy, who also has had a successful coaching career.

CU hasn't released its schedule yet, but Wisconsin's schedule has the Badgers playing at Lynah on Nov. 10-11. (Times are TBA, but they should both be day games since that's Dartmouth-Harvard weekend for the men.) I didn't look very hard, but the other non-conference games I could find were at Providence on Thanksgiving weekend.

How about going to all red ice? Same principle as Boise State's blue Field Turf football field. Also lots of logos on the jerseys like European hockey, since we clearly need the money. Seems to work for NASCAR too.

Also a rule change.

Section 1, rule 1.2 of the NCAA Ice Hockey Rules: "Except for the official markings provided for in these rules, the entire playing surface and the boards should be predominantly white in color except the kick plate at the bottom of the boards, which should be a light, contrasting color." I'd guess that just means that most ads should have white backgrounds. Look at the boards at an NHL rink, for example.

When seemingly came-out-of-nowhere Cornell played 3 OTs vs. Minnesdota-Duluth in the 2010 title game, it seemed like, we lose, no problem, Cornell women are on the rise, they'll be back. If only we had won that game.

The team played without Rebecca Johnston that season as she was on leave with the Canadian Olympic team. In addition, the roster included only 18 players, two of whom were goalies and one of whom also played soccer. So the fact that Cornell had the legs to go 3 OTs in the national championship game is amazing in itself. That was a spectacular season -- going from never winning an ECAC playoff game [at least in the "modern era"] to playing in the national championship in one season is likely never to be repeated.

It's 1-1 after 2 periods vs Princeton. Refs have been allowing a lot of physicality which plays into P's hands. Specifically, P has been obstructing Kristin O’Neill off-puck to keep her from gaining her game-changing speed. We're beginning to take control of the game and get the majority of chances but P remains dangerous. 2 Great goaltenders keeping it tight in Boissonnault and Neatby. Next goal could decide it.

There hasn’t been much coverage of past weekend’s contests against #1-ranked and undefeated Wisconsin (3-1 and 2-1 losses, respectively). From what I observed, the two losses were more competitive than I expected. Our team defense has come a long way to solidity, fewer mistakes and turnovers, and limiting shots on goal. Offensively, it was still very difficult to generate chances, except on the power play. We are deep team, a young team, and a pretty talented team. We are poised for the best season in a couple of years, but I think success may be limited by the youth and apparent lack of elite offensive talent, as well as the increasing parity of talent across the women’s collegiate landscape. We were spoiled by the 2009-2014 glory years, with some truly exceptional talents on the team—ironically, those teams’ relative lack of depth may explain why an NCAA title eluded them. But the program looks quite healthy and set for another cycle of success under Coach Derraugh. An Ivy title appears a realistic goal this year, and I believe we could make an ECAC playoff run with an outside shot of qualifying for NCAAs.

Very hard fought 2-1 victory tonight against a very solid [#3, 14-2-0 coming in] Colgate team--probably the best team Colgate's ever had. We won despite being outshot 35-16, and despite giving away a point-blank chance to tie with 3.5 seconds left. We were tactically smart against a 'Gate side that's quite physical in defense, poised to make the most of offensive opportunities while mostly keeping D-men high and preventing odd-skater rushes.
There were a few Big Red turnovers in the D-zone down the stretch that could have cost us. Boissonnault had a great game and was probably the difference in the end, coming up with a few saves that the average keeper would miss. Freshman forward Maddie Mills scored the opening marker in fine fashion, faking forehand and then roofing a backhander--her team-leading 9th goal of the season!

Tomorrow's flip-side game in Hamilton will be a huge test. Colgate will feel that they shouldn't have lost tonight and will want to set the record straight. Cornell will want to prove this wasn't a fluke as they quietly put together an impressive national resume.

USCHO has a very nice article about the Women's team.

I started reading it and didn't realize it's about the women's team, although I thought the writer was making some factual errors early on. Only in the third paragraph did I realize it is about the women's team and not that either the writer had some facts about the men's team wrong or that I didn't correctly remember these facts.

But the latest entry in the men's ECAC blog has a somewhat similar story.

True, the one about the women's team talks about the big role freshmen are playing on the team, while the one about the men's team talks about balance, quotes Schafer speaking about how players being seniors is important, and that only 2 of the 6 leading forwards are underclassmen.

Nonetheless, both talk about how well the two teams are doing and how young they are.

This year and in coming years, it appears that good times are in store for Big Red fans.

The players over the past several years have all talked about how close the team is, and I figured it was just athlete-speak, but this sounds like there is something different going on here. That’s great to see.

Either bad luck, or the RPI goalie was exactly 4' x 6'. How do you score 1 goal when you outshot the other team 37-8!

The RPI goalie was pretty good. She had a couple of great saves -- it easily could have been a 3-1 final. Cornell did not have a lot of high quality shots given the high total of shots taken.

Outshooting Union like 1,000,000 - 2 and losing 2-1 at the second intermission. Frustrating.

Don't hold me to this, but I think that would likely be a record of some kind.
well the scorekeeper is being stingy so the boxscore may not reflect my personal count.

Buncha homers.

I wasn't even sure it was actually offsides....

Whoever is keeping the stats does not know what they are doing. A "shot" is a shot on goal, not every launching of the puck in the direction of the net. Cornell has dominated possession the entire game but there has not been a lot of accuracy in the shots taken. And the juicy rebounds have gone toward the defenders rather than the attacking players.

a reasonable call though - ref had her hand up for like three seconds and cornell kept carrying forward. losing both draws after the call was really bad.

teams pack in tight and for all the shots on the scoresheet there weren't nearly enough "plays" where a player tried to move into space to receive a pass. and goddamn it you really have to be willing to let it fly sometimes from outside. ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE THE PUCK ON YOUR STICK WITH 4 SECONDS LEFT IN OT.

I thought the intentional offsides call was absurd, since the Cornell gal who was just offsides had her back to the lineswoman and reasonably could’ve thought she was onsides. But I agree it was awful cleanly losing the draws leading to the tying goal, and I was shaking my head when the gal at the point didn’t just let one go in the final seconds of OT.

My impression of this year’s women is a team that’s a scorer or two short. They rely too heavily for scoring on O’Neill and Mills.

intentional offsides is to stop people from intentionally stopping play not for someone trying to play the puck on a marginal call.. i rewound ii just to see the call was actually offsides and it was, but there are plays every game where someone tries to make a play at the line and pass the puck back in when it was clearly outside.. this was a play puck sliding and a player racing towards it and the ref not in view at all.. to make that call at that point of the game was absurd.

Men's hoops has only topped that figure twice in the Earl Era and haven't reached 1000 fans yet this season.

I am NOT saying the fans are choosing incorrectly.

Cornell playing great, up 3-0. Putting Daft Punk on hour loop behind the broadcast works eerily well. [www.youtube.com] fits perfectly with the cadence and "feel" of the PBP guy (who is quite good).

Kristin O'Neill is a stone cold killer but it's Amy Curlew with a wonderful dance through the defenders and an eng to push us back up by 3 with 4 mins to go.

Women’s hockey must be down this year, because frankly I don’t think our women are close in talent to our Frozen Four teams, yet somehow we are ranked 5th.

The women's team has shown that they can dominate play against weaker teams and hang tough with better teams, but they just don't have the depth of scoring to be one of the top tier teams this year. And they don't always score enough to get past teams that they outplay (Harvard yesterday, case in point). There does seem to be a significant drop off in strength after the quartet of Wisconsin, Clarkson, Boston College, and Colgate. But, there is a lot of reason to be excited about this team--our Freshman and Sophomore classes this year are full of skill, speed, athleticism. If Boissonnault is hot in the ECAC playoffs and we get a bit of puck luck, this team could potentially reach the championship game or better. They seem to be playing their best hockey of the season at this point and will have a 'nothing to lose' attitude going into the playoffs, so I think they will make it interesting.

I'm not sure where this sits historically stat wise for Cornell (I know it isn't close to the NCAA women's record), but by my count Boissonnault just completed an approximately 270 minute long shutout streak. Nice.

It was a toss-up as to whether to post here or in the "some history" thread.

After listening to the men comeback v. Yale, I checked out this week's episode of ONLY A GAME. The lead story was about the origins of the Cornell and Boston College Women's hockey teams and the role that the Baker Sisters from Lansing NY played in starting the teams in the early 70's.

As a girl who played hockey in my youth in the late 70's I am thankful for people like the Baker sisters for their persistence in getting girls/womens sports recognized. I'm also thankful my parents were very open minded (clueless?) about their 6 yr old little girl wanting to play ice hockey. Growing up in Connecticut in that time period, my dream was to play hockey on the Wesleyan Women's team. It was a long shot since I stopped playing at 11 when the local rink closed and killed when Wesleyan rejected my college application. However, while a graduate student at Cornell, I was able to play hockey again and played with many different groups of people and my hockey experiences are among myfavorite memories of my time at Cornell.

Folks, FYI
From Women's Coaches Club newsletter:
John Gaines
An important announcement about the first round of the ECAC's:
although the opponent is not set the game schedule is, all at Lynah:
Friday, 2/23 at 6:00;
Saturday, 2/24 at 3:00;
and Sunday, 2/25, if needed, at 3:00.

Coach wants a huge crowd so let's recruit as many people as possible to come see ... these games.

In February 2017, the NCAA announced that it had reached a four-year deal with Big Ten Network to televise the Women's national championship game beginning in 2017, and the Frozen Four semi-finals beginning in 2018.

Three unanswered pp goals. Even worse. Sorry -- only 2 pp goals; one was scored shortly after the pp ended.

Tied at 3-3 with 3 to go in the second. And Cornell scores with seconds on the clock to go up 4-3 as they head to the locker room.

Final stats for the Cornell women in Korea:

3 - 2 - 5 Johnston
1 - 1 - 2 Saulnier
0 - 2 - 2 Jenner
0 - 2 - 2 Fortino
0 - 0 - 0 Rougeau
---------
4 - 7 - 11

11 points in 5 games. Not bad at all.
