So who is going? I need to get my candy count correct. :-D I'm recovering from some sort of virus, but if I feel good enough, I'll be there with my wife. It's nice that they made the possible Sunday game earlier. Our band will be there, but I was told that Q is on recess, so I don't know about their fans.

The Q thread on USCHO wasn't anticipating good attendance. I think they're planning on Placid. UVM knows how that can work out.

Yeah, but on-campus playoff series are rarely well-attended. From what I remember, Cheel would often have near-empty student sections because the students who attended games for free all season were suddenly required by the league to pay for tickets. I'm not sure if that's still true, but the school might pick up the students, if the league still requires it.

Let's look at the attendance figures for the ECAC and Hockey East first round games this past weekend, just because I'm curious:

Host G1	G2	G3	Avg	Cap	%Cap	Season Avg	% playoff
UConn* 4045	4572 4309	9000	47.9%	5129 -16.0%
Cornell 3484	3888 3686	4300	85.7%	4022 -8.4%
Clarkson	2376	2878 2627	3000	87.6%	2583 +1.7%
RPI 2182	2601 2392	5217	45.8%	3143 -23.9%
Merrimack	2088	2210	2549	2282	2549	89.5%	2359 -3.2%
Dartmouth	1529	1942	1331	1601	4500	35.6%	2372 -32.5%
Boston U	1752	1917 1835	6300	29.1%	4360 -57.9%
Northeastern	1191	1330 1261	4666	27.0%	2459 -48.7%

*XL Center, Hartford (30 minutes from campus)

Observations: Three of nine rinks were more than half-full. Only two rinks had no big drop from a typical regular season weekend, but those two also happen to have the smallest capacity. Interesting that the two schools in the most populous city drew the sparsest crowds. Can't wait to see if Harvard breaks 4 figures this weekend. And judging from photos & reports from Lynah, Cornell's attendance numbers for the opening round may have been fudged.

i dont think the students showed less than normal by all that much.. A has been empty all year, B pretty close to normal. I know the townie side was down a bit just by looking at the tickets online. the GAadmission seats took the biggest hit

Q is not expecting many of their students to show up, since the seats they gave to the local Cornell Club were in the section where the Q students usually sit. However, most of the fans at Q games are townies, and the fact that Q is on spring break won't influence their attendance. I'm sure the games will be listed as sellouts, since almost every Q game I've gone to has been listed as a sellout, even though most of the time I have seen hundreds of fans disguised as empty seats.

"Attendance" figures are not turnstyle counts, they're tickets sold. If they seel the tix and people don't show the tickets still count.

Last time around, the Cornell fans were sold seats in the Q student section for games 1 and 2 since there were no students. They returned for game 3 and our section was moved.

The Q thread sounds like you may have plenty of empties to move to. I really hope Cornell has a great Traveling Faithful for this series. Road hockey is hard and anything that cheers on the team in a hostile barn is a help. Plus you might just get to see a Cornell performance for the ages. Gotta beat the best to be the best. cheer

A story about the upcoming weekend for Quinnipiac and Yale: [www.nhregister.com]

No bulletin board material, but here are some relevant quotes:

At Quinnipiac, junior forward Tim Clifton knew the down time would pay off in the long run. Especially since the Bobcats (25-2-7), ranked No. 1 in the nation, are facing Cornell (15-9-7), the unofficial No. 1 team in the country in terms of physical size, in a best-of-3 ECAC quarterfinal series at High Point Solutions Arena.

“There’s no stress on the body, which should go a long way with a potential three games against the monsters of Cornell,” Clifton said. “They’re big bodies. A three-game series might take its toll.”

...

Emotions typically run high between the teams. One of the keys for Quinnipiac will be to find a way to play its aggressive style without taking penalties.

“For us to be good, we have to have emotion, we have to play with pace and we have to play with an edge,” Quinnipiac coach Rand Pecknold said. “We just can’t cross that line into penalties. We also can’t go into the game and only focus on not taking penalties. That’s not going to work either. We have to have an edge. That’s what we’re good at. We push the limit. We just have to find that line and stay right on that line.”

So there is very good chance I won't be there tonight. Maybe if I suddenly start feeling better by 2PM, I'll drive straight to the rink, but doubtful.

Is there anyone out there who could bring and distribute newspapers? What about a couple of bags of Snickers Minis for the band and more to throw. I'd pay for the Snickers, but not for newspapers.:)

I figure that maybe if I take it easy today, I could feel well enough to go for #2 & #3, if needed.

Westerners have no clue where eastern states are. Dr. Mrs. still mixes up all the New England states. As far as they're concerned it's like Greek city states -- yeah, you know there are a bunch of them, but they're all tiny and interchangeable and pretty much all of them are irrelevant anyway. You'd be ashamed to feed a New England state to Arizona for more than a snack.

I know this is last minute, but I just called the ticket office. Despite the bleak picture painted online (SRO with just a few individual seats), they are selling tickets in the Q student section because the kids are on break. We were able to get 4 seats together in Section 111.

203-582-3905
$16 for adults, $6 for children

It's definite, I'm not going to be there tonight. I have 3 tix, 2 at will call & 1 that I could probably scan and email. They're free if anyone wants them. Easiest and most direct would be to call my cell 315-877-1180. I've got to go to pharmacy sometime, but you can leave a message.

Anyone watching the Boxcast feed notice how low the announcers' volume is? The background volume is fine, the volume of the eighth grader who sang the national anthem was fine, but as soon as the announcers' feed was turned on the volume was just too low. I have my computer's volume cranked all the way up and the player's volume cranked all the way up, and I'm straining to hear. I informed Boxcast, and at first the rep seemed uninterested, but I managed to convince him to pass the information along. Supposedly.

It's not just me, right?

He does need to stand on his head -- we're just not going to get anywhere near the grade A chances that they do, so he's got to even that out some

Nothing spells victory like committing a cross-check during your last chance power play.

I don't care that he scored the first goal; I don't care how good he is on face-offs. I'd sit Weidner for taking that asinine penalty and for, generally, being a defensive liability.

They are not checking IDs at the Will Call window. I can't go to tonight's game, but my friend who went to the game with me last night is going to pick up the tickets, which are in my name, at the Will Call window tonight. I asked if the tickets could be transferred to his name for tonight, and one of the people working there told us just to have him give my name when he picks up the tickets tonight.

In defense of Weidner, the Q player put a lot of embellishment on the play, which took place right in front of me. When Weidner saw he was being called for the penalty, he just shook his head, and the "victimized" Q player grinned. Hillbrich, who knows a lot of the Q players because his older brother had been on the team, skated over and exchanged a few words with the Q player, smiling and shaking his head like he was saying I can't believe you got away with that."
What hurt more than that penalty, was the soft first goal Gillam let in, and the fact that on Q's 2nd and 3rd goals, we let their players get to rebounds.

Oh, I'm sure the Q player embellished, but I just don't understand why one would put oneself at any risk of taking a cross-check penalty when on the power play.

Really, I don't understand cross-checking in general. How difficult is it to take your down hand off the stick whenever you're going to hit someone? You're either doing it to injure somebody or to gain an unfair advantage in moving someone off the puck or out of an area. The only place (see Dufresne, Dan) that cross-checking is worthwhile is defending the area in front of your own crease, and, even then, one should try to be a bit subtle about it.

i have one ticket (cornell section i think - i paid $19 via cornell ticket office) at will call for saturday night's game and will not be able to attend. free for anyone who wants it and knows how to transfer a will call ticket. email me at bernie.han@gmail.com if interested

I also have 2 tickets at will call, free for anyone. Call me 315-446-8550. I don't know how to transfer them, but there must be a way. Hopefully they win and I improve enough to drive down tomorrow.:-)

Thanks, so there tickets ready for someone to pick up. Please call and let me know, so that I can tell others, no.

The goals were actually nice. Good offense plus terrible defense. I'll take it!

The last time we gave up 4 or more goals on the road in a playoff game and won was game 3 of the QF at RPI in 1998. Oddly, the goal progression was exactly the same.

Cornell has been spectacularly successful in ECAC road playoff games. Considering that by definition they were the underdog in all such games, their record of 13-10-2 is excellent; note also that one of those ties advanced them on total points in the series.

Not during the period in which I have records of the poll rankings. These are the only wins against the top 10 that I have in my records, although prior to the late 90's they are spotty.

It is possible we did it during Ned's Golden Age, except we were probably #1 for much of that period. At some point the old polls will get put online (or I'll find someone with the treasure trove).

I guess I've never thought about this before, and I'm showing my ignorance, but what aspect of what rule allows for the goalie to return to the ice as a substitution after an icing when the team had the goalie pulled?

The goalie can always return to the ice as long as the player who replaced him is at the bench when the goalie goes back into the play. The substitution is a little more rigid than changing on the fly.

Not living up to my name, I have to say, Schafer kept his job with this game. FINALLY a good offensive game for us. No matter what the outcome yesterday, now I know there is still some good team there.

It's all pretty simple isn't it? Shoot the puck and good things happen.

Their third line beat us in unsettled situations, and their freshman sharpshooter was lights out. But our first and second lines ate Toews and Miner-Barron for lunch, and we scored a power-play goal when we really needed one. Staying out of the box in the third always helps.

Tomorrow, I predict (am hoping for?) a goalie battle. I'm sure neither Garteig nor Gillam is all that happy with the last couple of games.

Let's go with 0-0 heading into the third. Angello hasn't scored in a bit, so he'll probably break the deadlock. And then I'll hope for a goal from an unlikely source to salt it away—say, Freschi, shorthanded.

LGR!

We have scored 13 goals against Q this season.
(And given up 16.)

Strange to think that we, not Yale, are still battling for a spot at Lake Placid.

In 2013 we were one minute from shocking Q and advancing to (Atlantic City, I guess). The middle game was a rout but the other 2 were fantastic efforts.

I know the proper thing to do now is lick our wounds and mope about Schafer, but I'm wondering if we have any shot of slipping in at 15th in the Pairwise if UMD loses their semifinal and consolation game. That miiiiiight just knock them below us in RPI.

We'd need Michigan Tech and Michigan to win their conferences. I don't think UMD losing twice will be enough, though.

Shame that Hockey East has no consolation game. Two losses might knock Northeastern below us.

We were outshot 2-to-1 in game 1 and game 3. In game 2, we lost 10-0. In the excruciating finale, we couldn't maintain control of the puck in OT.

IIRC, the year Yale won the NC$$ they backed in after few thought it was possible.

I mean, we can hope. Bad luck the 15 is the sole member of its conference in contention, but maybe it just doesn't matter who wins the WCHA -- if MTU loses it may knock them below us anyway.

Disappointing loss, but look, we played a team that only two other teams defeated all year. On the positive side, this is a young team that nobody thought would be as good as the were. Who thought that we would have two wins against #1 teams?

Speaking of the NCAAs, had we won today I believe there would have been a very real chance of five ECAC teams making the tournament, though we wouldn't have liked it. Quinnipiac, Yale, and Harvard are in. People said had we won today we almost certainly would have been in, but let's add in a win in the semis against Harvard, and that would have sealed the deal. And if Dartmouth were to go on and win the ECACs, there would have been five ECAC teams in the tournament.
