A new commitment -- Peter Muzyka

Peter's a 16-year old 6'3" defenseman who's apparently "mobile" and an "effective puck mover." He'll be playing this year for the North York Rangers of the OJHL, and earlier this year was a 4th-round pick of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the OHL.

I suppose it's good that we're getting commitments from these guys because that's the way college hockey is now and it would mean something was wrong if we weren't. But we've seen enough guys decommit (both CU and elsewhere) that it's hard to really put any stock in a 16 year old.

Agreed -- recruiting has become extremely fluid given other college options, as well as the enticement of Major Juniors.

"Commited" should probably be renamed "interested."

But as you said, no matter how many decommit, to get them here they first have to show up as comm-, uh, interested.

Interesting that a kid who's not even 16 was concerned that he needed to act "before the opportunity could've slipped through my fingers..." While we know flipping commitments is becoming rather routine, it's good to know that at least for now he's honed-in on Cornell.

Hopefully this rising sophomore has enough of a work ethic off the ice to have a chance at getting accepted into Cornell.

We finally have a goalie recruit on-board, Matt Galajda from the Victoria Grizzlies of the BCHL. Last year as the Grizzlies' primary goaltender, he went 18-22 with a 2.70 GAA and .910 save percentage for a team that finished under .500.

Leahy's Elite Prospects page.

He's a '97, already 6-3 201 D with 19-29-48 ahem 72 in 44 GP in the GOJHL last year. He will be at Penticton in the BCHL this year. He's from Waterloo, ON.

Limoges' USHL numbers are great. 23-34-57 in 59 career games, for 0.97 PPG. In comparison, Tschantz was 0.83, Ferlin 0.79, John McCarron 0.62, Angello 0.49, Murphy 0.48, Freschi 0.45, Hilbrich 0.44, Jillson 0.42, Kubiak 0.40, Tiitinen 0.37.

He's also improving. He was 50th in league scoring last year. He is 8th this year.

Yeah, I think Limoges is turning out to be one of the better scorers we've recruited in a number of years, and I'm looking forward to his arrival in Ithaca. Cam Donaldson is also putting up huge numbers in his 1st year in the BCHL; he's scheduled to arrive the following year.

True, however, this is an opportunity for non-NTDP players. Nothing wrong with that, and Limoges and Green appear to be exciting prospects, but the top talent is with the NTDP. Would love to see that pipeline open back up to augment the already solid recruiting in the USHL.

I just hope when we have prospects who have a growth spurt that they don't decommit.

I wonder a bit about Kaldis. IIRC he just showed up on the radar in the Spring and now poof he's here. There was no lead time. Did he decommit from somebody else?

Alex Limoges was named to the USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game. The only other ECAC representation: Union has a forward, Yale has a defenseman, and Quinnipiac has a goaltender.

[collegehockeyinc.com]

Twenty Division I schools will have future players showcased in the 2017 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game, the league announced Tuesday.

The 40 players selected are all eligible for the 2017 NHL Draft and include 32 players who have already committed to NCAA schools. The event will take place Jan. 10 in Sioux Falls, S.D.

For those looking for some non-NHL hockey during the break, we have a number of guys playing in the World Junior A Tournament. Alex Limoges and Alex Green are playing for the U.S., which is 1-1 after beating Canada East 3-1 last night (the U.S. dominated, as the Canada East goalie stood on his head to keep it from 6-1) following a 1-0 upset loss to the Czechs in the first game. Both of our recruits looked good; although Limoges did not register a point he had a number of good chances, and it appeared that he was playing on the top U.S. line. Green was very solid on defense. The U.S. plays Switzerland in a quarterfinal game today at 5:30 ET

We have 3 recruits on Canada West -- goalie Matthew Galadja, and forwards Kyle Betts and Michael Regush. Canada West is also 1-1, with a 6-2 win over Switzerland, and 5-3 loss to Russia. Galadja has played both games in net. Betts looks like a terrific two-way player, and his speed really stands out. Regush didn't get on the scoresheet but acquitted himself fine. Canada plays the Czechs in another quarterfinal tonight at 9:30 ET.

The games are streamed free and can be accessed here.

If I'm reading the NHL draft rules correctly:

All players who will be 18 years old on or before September 15 and not older than 20 years old before December 31 of the draft year are eligible for selection for that year's NHL Entry Draft.

North Americans eligible for this year's draft are those born between 1/1/97 - 9/15/98. That includes Betts, Cairns (already drafted last year), Donaldson, Galadja, Green, Haiskanen, Kubachka, Leahy, Limoges, Locke, Regush (qualifes by 3 days).

Do we expect Green and Limoges to be drafted? If the 2016 draft was open to 1/1/96 - 9/15/97, Haiskanen, Leahy, and Mullin (no longer eligible) have all already been skipped over. (Limoges missed being eligible for the 2016 draft by 1 day).

US beats Canada East 4-0 for the Junior A Challenge championship. Limoges scored the US's 2nd goal and was named the US player of the game.

Green had a strong tournament as well for a US defense that gave up just a handful of goals.

New recruit, forward Liam Motley of Whitecourt of the AJHL. I haven't seen any video yet, but at 6'4" he's more of the traditional Cornell forward mode.

Given that he's 19 I'm assuming he'll be arriving in the fall.

Here's the news release

I could be wrong, but I think there have been cadets from Taiwan and formerly South VietNam in the past. The admissions website states that an applicant must be a "U.S. citizen (exception: see International Admissions.)"

The International Admissions page includes the statement "Up to 60 international cadets may study at West Point at any given time. Eligible countries are selected on an annual basis by the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Department of Defense. The American embassies notify invited nations to nominate up to six candidates per country to compete for admission to West Point."

So they COULD get two good forward lines a year from Sweden. Maybe six defensemen from Canada. Coupla goaltenders from Finland. Probably no Russians.

According to Elite Prospects, 3 Cornell commitments (Kyle Betts , Matthew Cairns, Cameron Donaldson) have moved to the Powell River Kings (BCHL) over the last 12 months, joining a fourth (Tristan Mullin). Per their website these are the only 4 college commits on their roster. Nanaimo II?

If so, I don't like it. I'd much rather have our guys playing at a level where there are other NCAA level players. Being the top 4 on a single team can't be great for development.

Not for a couple of more weeks anyway. :-D

Big loss. Limoges was the cornerstone of the class. Never really understood his commitment as I don't see the point in skilled forwards coming to Cornell as long as Mike is in charge...still, it was nice to dream.

We've always had defections; everybody's always had defections. They do seem more frequent now, but that may be more a matter of knowing more about the commitments, and earlier.

IINM there is a second G coming in this Fall, but beyond that I know zippo, and he could be another "now go out there and keep the team aggregate GPA high, kid!"

BTW, Galadja appears to have taken a big leap forward this year. IINM the BCHL is a scorers league and his numbers are quite impressive. Robson, the guy above him, is a Minny commit.

Jeez- if we're losing recruits who can score because of our defensive style, I hope we don't start losing goaltenders.

Do you suppose recruits can access and actually watch videos of current games played by schools they consider applying to? That could affect Cornell's recruiting success, depending upon the style of play the prospect prefers. I doubt they worry much about refereeing, fish, or unlucky bounces.

Fans attend hockey games because they are entertaining, regardless of starting time, ticket lines, seat design or other excuses. Top recruits sign up where their talents will be showcased and developed, and where they will enjoy competing. Declining attendance and lost recruits are telling us something. If you defend the team's style of play it's you, not me, who singled out the hockey program's primary problem.

There can be lots of reasons for decommiting. I know nothing about Limoges's decision, but reasons for decommits can be:
1) Finding out you are not going to be accepted (coaching staffs will often give a recruit advance notice as a courtesy). Mike McCarron was in this category.
2) Financial Reasons (Nolan De Jong stated that the scholarship from Michigan was way more than the financial aid he could get from Cornell).
3) Just changing one's mind which can often happen with early commits, later seeing another opportunity they think is better - maybe wanting to play in a more big time conference or having some friends now playing in Hockey East.
So I don't think we can jump to any conclusion on the decommits unless, like McCarron or De Jong, they actually tell us.

Penn State is just crushing it in terms of grabbing AYHL (mostly NY/NJ/CT) talent. Sternschein, Paquette, Crespo, Dowd, Gratton, Goldowski, Agriogianis and Barratt all grew up playing for AYHL teams. Barratt is freakishly good, he's one to watch. Agriogianis is the hardest working youth hockey player I've ever seen. I've seen all of them play except Crespo.

Certainly this year are change in playing style has been most noticeable, as we're really pushing the pace and the defense is consistently joining the rush. Where we are a bit lacking is in the high-end stick skills that the top blue chippers possess. Anyone who says we haven't changed our game isn't paying attention.

As for Limoges, it's unfortunate as he looked like he would've been an excellent addition. I think we still have quality forwards coming in - I think Betts, Mullin, Motley, Regush, and Locke are scheduled for next year, and they've all been productive.

Honestly, I think there are times we are pushing the pace of play TOO much. I care more about winning than playing exciting hockey, and the idea that high-offense hockey will solve all our issues strikes me as silly.

That's not to say we don't want to score. Scoring is nice.

The Cornellian in his time plays many parts.
His acts being seven ages. At first, the admittee,
Mewling and puking in his Balch room,
Then the whining West Campuser, with his backpack
And hungover morning face, creeping like snail
On Libe slope. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress’ entirely-unsexist-equality-and-independence-maybe-just-a-handy? Then an upperclassman,
Full of strange jargon and cloying like a Phillips WASP,
Jealous of oppression, sudden and quick in Comments,
Seeking self-actualization
Even in the LSAT's mouth. And then the alum,
In fair round belly with irony lined,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slippered parent,
With spectacles on nose and credit card on side;
His memories, well saved, a world too wide
For his trophy wife, and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, NPR
And 538 in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere donor-hood,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything
But money.

You know, you shouldn't knock refs to the ice. That's bad. But the ref did give him a little shove into the glass. Maybe he was trying to throw him into the box and missed?

I'm by no means defending the kid. You can't go around shoving refs. But to be fair, it looked like the kid shoved the ref about as hard as the ref had shoved the kid, and the ref just happened to fall. It's not as if the kid punched the ref in the face or something.

Yeah, knowing me, I might have done the same thing as the kid. Refs certainly can't shove players without good justification. I didn't see it here. If it wasn't for the boards, the kid might have fallen, just like the ref.

I actually wish that the kid kept his cool and reported the ref. But as I said, I'd have a chance that I'd do the same.

Actually you should re-watch the video. The ref had grabbed a piece of jersey to steer the kid away from mid-ice and over to the penalty box - and that should be OK for a ref to do I'd think. The kid then throws an elbow back at the ref in what looks like an attempt to get the ref to let go of the jersey. The ref's "shove" of the kid happens right after that - and watching it a few times it's really more like a gentle push in the direction of the box. it's just a little arm motion- the legs don't even change.

But when the kid turns around he puts his whole body into it and throws a two-handed shove that is basically a cross-check minus the stick.

Sorry, the kid is a punk and 100% at fault. That was enough for a multiple game suspension in men's rec leagues I played in. He should definitely be suspended in a high school setting.
