Joe Nieuwendyk just scored a really nice goal to get his 1000th career point (507 goals, 493 assists). Congratulations. Game against the Penguins is tied 3-3.
And the Devils score again!! 4-3! 37 seconds later. Wow.

direct quote from the announcer: "What a great achievement for the player from Cornell."

Flipped past that game a little earlier, I think I heard Gary Thorne's voice. Thorne is a Maine alum and probably the mainstream NHL personality who's most knowledgeable about college hockey. Always nice to hear him drop names of former colleges of current NHLers.

Well, Gary Thorne is calling the Ranger game tonight, so I doubt he was calling the Pens, too.
He may know his college hockey but he needs to learn the pro game, or at least the players' names and numbers. How long does it take to figure out that there is no 'G' in "Purinton" when even that homer Bill Clement can get it right while sitting right next to him? He's been butchering names (and IMO showing a minimal understanding of the game) for years. (Sorry, kinda hit a nerve there )
Anyway, to get back on topic, congrats to Joe! That's another great accomplishment. (Screw the rest of the Devils.)

[Q]and IMO showing a minimal understanding of the game[/Q]
I think it shows not enough interest as a broadcaster, perhaps minimal interest in that particular team, but I don't think it shows a lack of understanding of the game - that's a bit harsh. Certainly not entirely professional though.

It is depressing, isn't it? I'm glad the Red give me something to cheer for in the hockey world!

Sorry, I didn't mean to relate that to the names of the players. He just generally doesn't seem to know what he's talking about either, but that's just my opinion.
