No short handed goals

An alum of UAA on USCHO was asking people not to compare UAA with Canisius. Well, here is one way that they can both be compared with Cornell!

We are the only team in the top 30 (top 50%) penalty kill that hasn't scored a short handed goal this season. The only other teams that haven't scored a short handed goal are Alaska Anchorage (32), Mercyhurst (41), Dartmouth (44), Canisius (51), and American International (54).

Dartmouth is another name that really sticks out.

Against Vermont last night, one of our penalty kills actually looked like a power play and we got off something like 4 or 5 shots. It got me thinking about our inept ability at netting short handed goals.

I would like to think that our lack of short handed goals is because we are so focused on stopping the other team... It seemed at first that a smaller sheet like Lynah causes transition mistakes to be more likely punished, i.e. less time for recovery after a turnover. But maybe the reverse is true; less time for separation after the turnover.

Perhaps we don't score shorthanded too much because we're more content with skating around with the puck (i.e. wasting time) than giving the puck right back to opponents.

Last year, we had 4 SHGs (Bell, Murray, Mark McRae, and Bâby). The year before that - only 1. And the year before that - 3.

In addition to the four names mentioned above, I believe Palahicky is the only other current member of the team who has scored a shorthanded goal while playing for Cornell.

NOTE: Bell's and Murray's SHGs last year were both in the playoff series against Yale, as many of you will recall.

...And you're right. We had some great chances in both the Vermont and the Dartmouth games while shorthanded.

I still can't think of Chris Higgins without remembering Murray's turning-point SHG in Game One.

Smaller sheet? I believe Lynah is an NHL regulation 200x85, like almost all the other rinks we play in.

Lynah is regulation.

There was one player who had 5 shg a few years ago. It might have been the BC dwarf.

Yup, 200 x 85 like most others. Although Harvard is 204 x 87!

Lynah feels small bc the seats are steep, so the (aggressive) crowd is right on you, but it is standard.

CHTG lists Bright at 202 x 85, but whatever.

1995-96, John Madden (Michigan) had 10 SHGs, believed to be the NCAA single-season record. For his career, I believe it was 23.

Many rinks feel like there is a size difference from the stands. Union seems small, too but is listed at 200 x 85 on USCHO I think.

Madden continues to get them in the NHL.

The TBRW? page [www.spiritone.com] has the sizes of all the ECAC rinks. All are NHL regulation (200x85) except Harvard (204x87), Princeton (200x80), and Vermont (200x90).
