What teamwork, what a goalie, what luck. Nice to have an important Cornell sports event decided by 1 goal in our favor.

... is what I thought was typed, at first glance.
Why couldn't this game have been on the national cable channels not just Time Warner Cable? We need taller camera stands, or something mounted in the end of the horseshoe so you can see in the corners.

Now played No. Dakota twice in New York state, winning 1-0 each time with the goals each scored by defensemen (Skip Stanowski had the goal in the NCAA semis in '67 at Syracuse).

Team didn't look like they played at their top level but the skilled UND team probably had a lot to do with that. Hopefully they'll hit their stride tomorrow.
Any thoughts on the penalties? Some of them looked a little soft. M. Devin 5 minute was probably deserved but the 5 min we got in our favor looked soft.
Overall, a really good "grind out" win.

I was only listening, but it sure sound like the team blocked a ton of shots in the last couple of minutes. Scrivens must have been spectacular, too, by the sound of it.

Only the third time Cornell has beaten a top-5 team in Schafer's era. First win over a top-5 team at Lynah in 27 years.

Trotsky, that doesn't seem right. I remember an early season game, either 95-96 or 96-97 season against Vermont, back when they had the Keebler Elves there. Vermont was ranked somewhere in the top 3 at the time of the game. Are your stats based on end-of-year ranking?

No, it's the ranking against the team at the time of the game. That's why there are gaps -- I need a complete history of rankings by week, haven't been able to find one yet.
(Alternately, it could be built from Ithaca Journal back issues for some enterprising researcher...)

On 1/7/97, Cornell tied #1 Michigan 3-3 at Yost.

I didn't hear it mentioned on the broadcast, but we dressed 7 defensemen tonight. So after Joe Devin got tossed, we went the rest of the way with only 10 forwards.

Because of the tv timeouts, it was less important than usual for Cornell to roll four lines.

Any thoughts on the penalties? Some of them looked a little soft. M. Devin 5 minute was probably deserved but the 5 min we got in our favor looked soft.
My seats are pretty much right behind the Cornell bench, so I had no view of the five minute major UND took, because it happened in the corner I can't see at all. But I did see Scott Garrow react pretty energetically to the hit, and he is generally pretty low-key on the bench, so based on that single data point I can say that perhaps the five-minutes was justified.

Just a little note on scrivens. He's gotten a bad rap (average goalie, makes the expected saves, never STEALS a win). Well folks, he just did. We got outplayed, outmanned, in every aspect tonight. If it wasn't for our "average" goaltender, it wouldve been 3-1 minimum, and that's being nice. So let's give credit where its deserved and recognize we stole one (not that I mind)!!

Sitting in N - thought both Major penalties were good calls. Very tough game - our passing seemed to be a tad off for about 2/3 of game - and especially on power play in general. shot on goal 28 - 19 in Favor of ND. We blocked about 14 shots in the third period alone. They are a fast team - but we gave them the puck maybe a dozen or more times through poor or weak passes trying to clear our zone.
Somehow we found a way to get one beautiful goal. and to stymie most of their chances and Ben got the rest.
Was particularly impressed with ND's ability to pin us in our end for more than a minute at a time. We need to work out some better strategy to break their cycle....
We had a few good opportunities but couldn't quite cash in. On positive side we won a fair number of face offs. We kept most of ND shots towards the outside or point - and our D made couple of great plays on some tight 2-1 breaks.
Danny Kristo is very fast - thought Zajac played very well for ND.
Tomorrow night should be fun - Anyone also going to watch the Women play at 3 versus Colgate ?

I arrived at 6:45 pm Friday night with a ticket to sell and I was not the only one unloading extra tickets that late. Lots of season ticket holders have extra tickets available even for sold-out games so it is quite likely that you can score tickets [at face value...] outside the ticket office entrance on game night....Any game but Harvard.

I am so effing glad that I could sing Cornell songs at Dunbar's this evening, without it having to be a "let's sing even though it was just a tie" or worse, "let's sing even though we lost" kind of thing. It was a "let's sing, and we effing won tonight" kind of thing. A downright excellent time to be back on campus. As usual, Ithaca did not disappoint. In case I haven't yet made it clear, I am damn glad I came back to campus tonight. I love it here. Okay, good night.

Was that Scrivens' best performance of his career? Off the top of my head I can't think of a game where he played better. He was on every puck from the start of the game when NoDak had that quick shot on net. Really impressive effort by him - especially considering that the rest of the team didn't step on the ice until the end of the 2nd period.
Good win, but no help in the pairwise (I know it's early for this). Need to get some more wins vs. TUCs so tomorrow is huge.
Lastly - there was a minor penalty called against us as time expired. That is just for record-keeping, right? Has no impact on anything tomorrow.

I am surprised that nobody has mentioned our 0-for-21 PP unit yet in this thread. We were 0-for-5 in this game and we definitely should have won by a larger margin. I don't think the 1-0 victory was a STEAL.
Perhaps the reason our PP doesn't work anymore is that the opposing teams are beginning to watch our tapes and learn our movement system. I think we need to change it up a bit to make it less predictable.

I think you'd be crazy to say we didn't steal the game tonight. I'd be interested if they kept a time on offense stat and see how far we were at a disadvantage in this game. The problem with the power play tonight was that they had no answer for a high pressure penalty kill. To begin with they couldn't get the puck in the offensive zone with pressure through the neutral zone, they need to just dump it and send everyone in to retrieve. Then the UND defenders were immediately rushing the puck carrier in the zone, especially at the point. The answer to that is generally to make a few 1-touch passes in a row, and create a little more motion with your players, but we didn't seem to be able to do that last night. I think their conditioning is still a bit off from the flu bug.

Our old friend Goon, who posted a few times when we played in Grand Forks last year, had this to say:
It was a slow, ugly game, and neither team looked good bringing the puck through the neutral zone. We finally capitalized on a 2-on-1, and went into defensive shutdown mode for the last 15 minutes or so. I know we can play better, and I'm sure North Dakota can as well. I'd be shocked if they don't score in the first five minutes tomorrow night.
As for Scrivens, he played well but I still think that 0-0 tie against UMass a couple of years back was his strongest performance. In terms of significance for RPI and such, this may have been more important.
Let's get at least a tie tomorrow.
I watched the game on the internet tonight Kudos to Cornell their internet broadcast was top notch. That being said, this is too bad because this was one of the most boring games that I have watched in at least the last three years.

I dont think ND outplayed CU except for the majority of the time the last 10 min after the goal.. and while scrivens made some good saves at the end CU also have easily 5-6 scoring chances. we missed one open net and several shots from inside the circles beat the goalie who I thought looked really shaky . the ND team at the end was the best all night, other than that the biggest difference was that CU constantly tried getting cute with passes and the ND speed cut them off all night . those passes work against most of the ECAC but not BU/CC/ND as we have shown..
anyone figure out what they were reviewing in the first? it was too late to review the first none goal did some other ND shot come close after that?

Announcer at rink said it was a review of the no goal call and that the call stood as called on the ice -
I agree seemed to be about 5 mins after the play on the ice and no one around where I was sitting had a clue - thought they were reviewing the off-sides call; I told them no that is not reviewable.

I think they were reviewing a big scramble that occurred about 3 minutes earlier in front of Scrivens. They saw that his right pad went into the goal and thought that the puck was in as well. Video replay was showing that someones stick blade was in the goal - not the puck.

Last night's performance by Scrivens was definitely very good, but I don't think it was the game of his career. He never really was subjected to a relentless barrage of shot after shot after shot. Sure, he made some very nice saves of shots from close range, but it didn't seem like he ever faced thoroughly serious threats. Nonetheless, great performance by him and the defense to put up a goose egg.

Who was out last night for Cornell? It was tough to see on the video feed and because of the wrestling feed mishap I missed the line ups. Was Scali in?
Another question: Do you guys think J Devin will play tonight?
That was a really silly penalty he took - offensive zone boarding. I realize that it was a Game Misconduct, not Game Disqualification, but Schafer might want to show the team there is no need for that shenanigans this deep into the season and sit him. Since this is a non-league game, might be a good time.
Another question: Do you guys think J Devin will play tonight?

Who was out last night for Cornell? It was tough to see on the video feed and because of the wrestling feed mishap I missed the line ups. Was Scali in?

Scali was in and playing his heart out, trying to outskate Sioux to the puck at every opportunity (and often failing, but still trying his best nonetheless).
Unless everyone's healthy, I doubt Schafer will bench Devin.

I'm fairly certain the 11/19/99 4-0 win vs. SLU was a win over a top-five. If I recall they came in as #4 that night. Can't find anything quickly on the web to confirm or deny my recollection.
EDIT: Nevermind,,, seems I got my fours mixed up. SLU was 8-0 and ranked #6 this night: [www.uscho.com]

I heard them mention that Roeszler was still sick with the bug that had gone through the team. They didn't mention whether he would be well enough to play tonight.

From my seat on The Internets, I would say that we and UND spent an extended portion of the 1st period feeling each other out and then traded woefully ineffective five-minute power plays in the second. We looked very good in the first few minutes of the third leading up to the goal, went into a great defensive shell for about 10 minutes, and were, in the end, reasonably lucky to preserve the win against significant NoDak pressure. For the first two periods it was a particularly boring game. (How is that even possible with two five-minute majors? I'm not sure, but it is.) For the last five minutes of the third, it was much more exciting than I would have liked.
I thought both goalies looked pretty solid, but UND was much more interested in protecting their freshman than we were in protecting Scrivens—hence the 7 shot differential in the first.
UND reminded me of some particularly strong Clarkson teams from the mid-90s, say, for example, the '96-'97 team with Todd White. They were quick and strong with the puck, and not averse to taking some body in the corners; yet, they seemed content on offense to take long shots from the point that weren't serious threats to our goalies. Jason Elliot, in those days, absorbed those shots like a giant sponge; Scrivens was doing that last night. (The only reasonable analysis—come on, Fridge!—from the otherwise woefully inadequate Time-Warner commentators was their observation regarding how well Scrivens was preventing rebounds.)
I don't feel that we stole a win; honestly, I think we were not at our best last night, so, as Wodon mentions in his capsule on CHN, we reverted to a grind-it-out style, recalling that '97 (Cooney!) Cornell team, that I am rather glad we can still play. (FWIW, Hakstol seemed to feel that his team did not come out flat.) It's not a high-win-percentage style, nor is it a style I want to see us have to resort to very often. But, when you're having an off night versus tough competition, it's a great way to make it to a coin toss.

Good win, but no help in the pairwise (I know it's early for this). Need to get some more wins vs. TUCs so tomorrow is huge.
Someone can correct me if I am wrong but I believe the TUC category only counts if both teams in a comparison have 10 or more games against TUCs. Cornell is currently 2-2-1 (wins over North Dakota and UNH, tie with Union, losses to Yale and Colorado College). Cornell only has three teams left on the schedule that are currently TUCs - North Dakota, Yale, and Union. St. Lawrence and RPI are currently no. 26 and 27 in RPI and could become TUCs. And Cornell would probably play one or two TUCs if it makes it to Albany. Just saying that getting to 10 is not assured yet or might not come into play until very late in the year. Best thing right now is to boost our own RPI by winning.

Great grind it out win. On one of those nights where the offense and power play were not clicking, the defwnse and goaltending stepped up and generated a win over a highly ranked opponent. Scrivens play was superb. I'm looking forward to a more open but harder hitting game tonight.

I'll bet they were. If there's a chance you can tell me when RPI grabbed #1 that season (I assume they held it after) I can update.ursusminor
Trotsky,
You have listed the game that Cornell played RPI in 83-84, What about the three games they played in 84-85? RPI must have been in the top five for all three.

Very true, but wins against TUCs, who are by definition better teams will also help the RPI and given that NoDak is from the WCHA will also help us in common opponents. I guess my late-night ramblings just took the easy way out and instead of saying all that just said "TUCs".

Nice post, Scersk. While acknowledging that hockey is much better in person, from my seat at the end of the thirteenth row of Section O (Which really does suck when you can't see the penalty times for 5 min majors) I thought it was far from boring. NoDak's passes were frequently tape-to-tape causing some beautiful play, and I was surprised by our own speed and set-ups which were only foiled by some great sticks-in-the-lanes Sioux defense. But you can't usually see that on TV. I'd love the consensus that we didn't play well to be right for tonight.

Tonight's game is also huge for the Common Opponent Comparison of PWR. Going 2-1 vs. the WCHA (NDak and CC) could definitely turn a lot of comparisons vs. WCHA teams as opposed to going 1-2. Obviously there are a lot of other factors, but if we are going to make the NCAA's without winning the ECAC tournament, tonight's game may be the key to passing a few other teams in PWR.ansky629

Anybody else notice the gamesmanship between Schafer and Hakstol over line changes after whistles? Hakstol was complaining loudly to the refs, because he felt Cornell was changing extremely late, which they were, because UND was slow making the required first change. At one point, Hakstol blatantly sent a set of forwards on the ice well after Cornell changed, Schafer went ballistic and the refs forced the UND skaters to return to the bench.
I like little stuff like this and I hope it continues tonight. It's one of the fun things associated with back-to-back games against the same team that we rarely get here at Lynah.

Thanks, where the heck do you get all of these big talented goaltenders? LOL, a lot of UND fans are down on them right now, no puck luck, missing our top players, the only games I have seen Cornell in is against UNH and last night.

That was Cornell 6, #1 Vermont 4 at Lynah on 11/15/96.
On 1/7/97, Cornell tied #1 Michigan 3-3 at Yost.
Edit: My source for the contemporaneous rankings is Arthur Mintz's 1996-97 season recap in the 1997-98 media guide.
That UVM game was the first time I'd ever seen a hockey game in person. What a way to start.
I only caught the 3rd period of the game on the feed (bolted out of work early and got home just in time for the start of the 3rd), but I thought the biggest difference there was passing. NoDak was tape to tape on more of their passes, while Cornell seemed to be passing into skates early in the period and passing just out of reach in the last 10 minutes or so. The Cornell goal and a lot of the good puck possession Cornell generated for the first 5 minutes of the period featured solid passes, either as routine plays to open men cycling in the corners or pretty looks through traffic like Kennedy's sweet feed for the game-winner.
Cornell's shot blocking ability continues to amaze me. I figured I'd get used to it eventually, since Schafer's teams have always been good at blocking shots, but it's still impressive.

Missing your top players? Your top scorers seemed to on the ice or someone else was wearing their jerseys. I didn't see Hextall and Genoway, that seemed to be about it...thanks for taking it easy on a bunch of eggheads.
I loved watching these two games. The Sioux were a blast to watch. There were a fair number of fans and they were in full color. It was good to see Cornell test itself against a top team that can really force the action and impose its will at times. Hopefully, the Red can learn some valuable lessions...especially in neutral zone play, where they really got schooled.
