I'm confused, Jim. Your poll is for men but the two you cite are for women.doh

Right. I didn't read carefully enough to see those were women's polls. Easy mistake to make with Minnesota and BC at 1 and 2. But then my thought was Clarkson? CLARKSON???wtf

Men's polls haven't been announced yet. My plan, like last year, is to post all polls weekly. I didn't think there would be enough contrversy about the women in the ECAC to poll it, and I didn't want to wait till the men's polls are released to start our own. Sorry about the confusion, I've added a note that these are just the women's polls so far.

USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's Preseason is posted. We're in the also category at 18, but Yale with 4 first place votes? I guess traditionalists who say they're still first till someone beats them?

I guess it depends on how well they weather the goaltending transition. They lost a couple of their top scorers, but that's true of most teams most years if I'm not mistaken. BC (who I'm just going to assume will win the championship until they stop winning it every other year) lost two of their top three scorers and the goalie who played almost all their minutes. Quinnipiac lost two of their top three scorers and the goalie who played almost all their minutes. I don't know enough about the goalie recruit(s) they presumably have coming in to say whether that'll be a problem for them, but I think their system and depth are strong enough that they shouldn't have TOO much of a fall-off.

From media day today Ken Schott is reporting the coaches poll has Yale at 1, media has RPI. We're 5 in both, with a first place vote in each. Cornell’s Joakim Ryan was on the coaches’ team. Once the ECAC posts the results, I'll post them.

Nate Owen, of USCHO, does his preseason picks in the ECAC.

He picks us at 5 and this quote:

Why the Big Red will finish higher than predicted: Cornell puts last year behind it and gets a big year in net from Andy Iles and up front from Brian Ferlin.

Why the Big Red will finish lower than predicted: Iles and the rest of the upperclassman don’t raise their game, and Cornell’s large freshman class can’t pick up the slack.

Not too obvious.

USCHO Men's and Women's posted above, as well as USA Men's. The USA Women's may be last week's. I'll correct it if there is a new one tomorrow.

So the men moved to 19 in USCHO and stayed there in USA. Not bad for not playing.

I'll post them later, but the men are 18, and the women are still 3, with 1 first place vote, in USCHO polls this week.

With apologies to BearLover, it'd be nice if Yale can put up a good fight against the Gophers at Ingalls this weekend.

How did we get ahead of Union? Since Union whipped us 3-0 on 11/9, we've also lost to Clarkson, and then beat St. Lawrence, Brown, and Yale. St. Lawrence & Brown are hardly the Blackhawks and Red Wings, and we beat Yale by one goal. (And Yale continued the trend of other teams outshooting us.) On the other hand, all Union did was sweep RPI, the coaches' preseason favorite to win the ECAC, 4-3 and 4-1 in back-to-back games.

Where's the justice? screwy

It isn't even like Union is a surprise team either, coming off of back-to-back-to-back tournament appearances.

Pleased, but surprised.

Interesting. I'm surprised the women didn't drop.

Pleased, but surprised.

A weekend split to another highly-ranked team is no reason for a significant drop. Had we swept, a good case could be made to move past Bucky.

I love that in a week where we didn't play we managed to both rise and fall in the polls, respectively.

Hence the both rise and fall part.

I have no objection to moving in the polls when you don't play. It's moving in both directions that seems odd.

Nonetheless, it has the same explanation: just different sets of morons trying to derive a total order from limited pairwise information.

I hope this was a joke. "pairwise" with a lowercase 'p', meaning the results of games which are played between pairs of teams.

It's different sets of individuals trying to make sense of the game results and their own preconceived notions.

Seriously though, I think many of the pollsters do look at the Pairwise. I think this is pretty clear late in the season when the polls start to converge toward the rankings. Early on though they give less weight to the rankings and more to their own preconceived notions. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing given the small sample size issues.

Up a position in both polls. Did the poll voters finally notice the Florida tournament results, or was it our whupping the Russian youths?

Wisco and Notre Dame both lost; they had been immediately in front of us. Miami, the other team we jumped over, is really in a virtual tie with us.

I also have a feeling people are starting to look at the PWR now.

5 ECAC teams in the top 12 is outstanding! I can only imagine the gnashing of western teeth if we wind up with that many teams in the tourney. :)

Not exactly a "Polls" item, but.....

I just stumbled across a Minnesota Goofers Vs. Penn State hockey game on BTN, Ch. 610 on DirecTV.

Since I have not yet seen PSU play, this interesting to me. I plug my nose & tolerate the goofers...

1-0 Minnesota late in the first. I suspect this game is not live but have no interest in looking for the outcome.

Still 12th in the polls. We all were hoping for Cornell movement in the polls after the Lynah thaw. Would have been nice to see how a cancellation compares to a bye week for poll movement purposes.

Well, the polls will be interesting tomorrow. The machinations of all the results jumped us from tied for 10 to #6 in the PWR (and with Union and Ferris each having just one more comparison win than we have). I somehow doubt the pollsters will be quite as impressed by our two 1-goal wins (one in OT) over Yale and Brown. Yet, we are getting to the point in the season when the pollsters seem to keep an eye on the PWR , too... I'm guessing we'll come in around #8 in the polls and only move up to #6 if we can hang there for another week.

No losses in the new year (4-0-2) and ~9 games unbeaten. No January swoon this time around. Even if it's not true that we have a terrible January every year in the past, it has seemed that way.

Didn't we address this last year? No matter how much you keep repeating it, we don't have any kind of a tendency toward January swoons.

We're 9th in USCHO, back in the top ten for the first time since November 5, 2012 (who remembered we were actually 4th at any time last year?)

Don't change anything but whenever I see the cut-off at 16 teams with an AQ falling way below the line, I always think "why isn't the cut-off at 15?"

You're correct, the #16 team is not going to make it.

And of course 15, 14, etc. will not make it if dark horses win the major conference tourneys.

I read through Adam's "Bracket ABC's" article and am still trying to calibrate myself to thinking in terms of the new selection criteria. Now that it's apparent that RPI is clearly the most significant influencing factor in determining comparisons, I'll pose the usual question about using KRACH. It feels like this is the closest we've ever been to making that switch now that the PWR comparisons have been so simplified. Adam points out the very minor differences around the bubble between PWR and RPI rankings.

And since they want to give a road-win bonus, we can even use KASA (KRACH Adjusted for Site Advantage).

Sure, but that is more speculative. As it stands, no matter who wins the Atlantic, they bump Notre Dame.

Of course. Just saying there's no real magic number until it's all done, so truncating will always give somewhat of a false sense (not to mention that listing the next 4 or so teams gives an idea of who is a threat to overtake teams on the bubble).

None of this matters, since the links list everybody.

Who makes the determination? Natural cynicism would suggest the NC$$ isn't up to the task of comparing metrics on rational grounds, but it does seem like there's been somebody with at least a couple functioning brain cells nudging them slowly towards reason.

Agreed, I'm just saying they usually draw a line under 16, denoting the "cut", when the true cut is - at best - 15. That's why I made clear that I wasn't expecting Jim to do anything different, because I'm being exactly the kind of person that I usually roll my eyes at.

I'll put the PWR up, since I don't think tomorrow's UNH-BU can significantly change the top 16.

Win.

This.

If we're going to get anywhere we're going to have to beat teams like Q. Winning that game would "make up for" at least the Colgate result and set us up for (hopefully) a nice end of RS run.

Even a loss might leave us with a shot, but then it becomes dicey.

Pretty amazing to have such a big drop after being 6th just 3 games ago.

I thought RPI didn't drop if you beat a bad team. Did the other teams around us win, or am I misunderstanding that mechanic?

Back to 9th in PWR after the Q win.
And beating Princeton drops us into a 3-way tie for 11th. Never go to New Jersey.

I thought RPI didn't drop if you beat a bad team. Did the other teams around us win, or am I misunderstanding that mechanic?

Northeastern beat Maine and North Dakota beat Duluth to raise their RPI above ours.

And Q losing to Colgate dropped the bonus points we got for beating them.

I went to CHN to see what the effect would be if Quinnipiac had won. We would still be 11th and Quinnipiac would 6 instead of 7. But our RPI actually goes down from .5489 to .5481. If I am reading it correctly our unmodified RPI falls even more but our bonus is larger.

I wasn't sure what to make of the Q-Gate game RPIwise. I mean, having played both teams twice, either one winning (or losing) would impact our RPI, right?

RPI is, I think (and a quick search backs this up) just a function of winning percentage + opponents' win percentage + opponents' opponents' win percentage, with each component having a different coefficient (and something in place to keep bad wins from hurting you). Would it really matter at all which of Q and Gate won, or that we went 1-1 against Q and 0-2 against Gate, as far as RPI is concerned?

It's not a poll, but anyone want to see why shootout wins are stupid, just look at the NCHC standings for the top two teams.

                 W	L	T	SW	Win %	Pts.	Overall:	W	L	T	Win %
North Dakota	13	7	0	0	.650	39 18	9	3	.650
St. Cloud State	12	5	3	0	.675	39 18	7	5	.683

SCSU gets second because they have 3 ties and ND doesn't. They have the "better record" but lose because they lost the shootouts. They also won twice at ND. Fortunately first place can be determined on the ice, when they play ND at home this weekend.

My impression (not backed by math) is that RPI is all about your record plus your in-conference opponents' out-of-conference play. In conference, the opponents' record will tend toward 0.500. OOC record will shift that above or below 0.500. So if your conference is doing well against other conferences, their OOC won-lost record will be higher and therefore, the overall record will be higher.

Again, not backed by math. Just my instinct.
