I'm glad that others have begun to see in this team what many of us began to see a short time ago. I found INCH's new power rankings interesting (sorry if they were posted elsewhere I have not come across it). I was able to be at the Sucks game and I left Lynah somewhat deflated. A tie to Harvard feels like a loss. However, INCH has a point with ranking us fifth nationally in power rankings.

Inside College Hockey
The Big Red held Harvard's nation-leading power play to just one goal in five opportunities in a 2-2 tie on Saturday night at Lynah Rink.

I guess they have a point.

It's not from the polls, but I like this quote from USCHO's "What we learned" post:

Need a sense of normalcy? Cornell took three points this weekend, extending the nation’s longest unbeaten streak to seven games.

While we certainly have been steady in racking-up points, I would like to see us control a bit more of the play than we have recently. I thought we were on our heals a bit too much against Dartmouth, the successful result notwithstanding.

Agree. One other data point: at one point in the third period against Harvard, shots in the period were 5-2 for Cornell according to livestats. From that point to the end of overtime, shots were Harvard 10, Cornell 0. "On our heels a bit too much?"worry

After clicking through this link, I noticed that BU is now #2 in the INCH rankings and the USCHO poll, and #1 in the Pairwise. Since losing back-to-back games against Lowell and Merrimack in early November to fall to 3-4-1, the Terriers are on a 12-2-0 run (starting with a resounding 5-0 win at BC, who were 9-2-e time, and including the game at MSG). A tight loss to them looks a lot better now than it did at the time.

Playing with John's DIY rankings calculator, note that changing the BU game to a tie makes a pretty damn good season look great rankings-wise and that changing the BU game to a win makes the season look dominant. Like #3 nationally dominant.

I sometimes kind of hate the confluence of small numbers of events and small sample spaces.

(Indeed, after Lowell's recent loss, even just a tie makes us look golden.)

PS Winning twice against Colgate this weekend would go a long way toward a great seed in the tournament. Colgate is unlikely to drop out of contention, and they have some great non-conference wins that will help our common opponents criterion.

No, I'm not really a big fan of Monopoly, actually. And I don't know what "Civ" is... Civilization? I just happen to possess a working knowledge of medieval warfare. And Cornell hockey, more than anyone else, reminds me of medieval warfare.

Cornell took an expected and deserved tumble in the INCH Power Rankings this week. We sit at tenth.

Inside College Hockey
We guess it could have been worse for Cornell on a weekend where they were swept by travel-partner Colgate ... at least they remembered to pack their jerseys this time.

Interestingly, INCH sees something in this team that causes them to rank it above teams much better situated in the PWR: Michigan (8th in PWR), Ferris State (4th in PWR), Maine (10th in PWR), Ohio State (5th in PWR), Miami (10th in PWR), and North Dakota (16th in PWR).

Prediction: Cornell playing in a distant region on an Olympic sheet of ice that is the home rink of our opponent. And our cowbell will be confiscated because it conflicts with the home team band's Fender amps.

Given our play of late, if we manage to get a bid to the NCAA tournament this year, I will rejoice at the above prediction coming true, unreservedly and with abandon.

MSG is 200x85, just like Lynah. The seating just isn't as steep. I'm reasonably certain that the NHL requires all their sheets to be 200x85, though I'm also certain someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

I won't bother posting the entire results here, but this week's USCHO.com poll has us as #11, up from #12 last week.

The latest Bracketology is interesting... has us in Green Bay as #15 vs. #2 Michigan, with the other regional semi #11 Miami vs. #5 Minnesota-Duluth. That could be a great trio of games, especially with the preview it would give us of next season's Michigan game in Secaucus Bayonne New York City.

I know, polls don't mean anything, with the possibility of conference tourney upsets we probably have to win out to get into the NCAAs, blah blah blah... it's still fun to read.

Now that we're back up to tied for 14th in the PWR, we're back in the "Bracketology" mix as a potential NCAA at-large bid.

Jayson initially has us in the East Regional in Bridgeport, as the #14 facing #3 U. Mass-Lowell, with #5 Ferris State and #12 Michigan State the other regional semifinal. He moves Ferris State to avoid the intraconference matchup in the first round, and we get #6 Boston University facing #12 Michigan State in the other semi.

So in this hypothetical universe, we could - provided we pull off a fairly big upset over Mass-Lowell - get a rematch with BU in the regional finals in Connecticut for the right to go to the Frozen Four. Now that would be an interesting opportunity.

I still think we should just win the ECAC tournament and not worry about the at-large bid, and I know that it might only take one or two upsets in the title games of other conference tournaments to knock us out of the top 15, but it's nice to know we're still in the mix.

It'd be worth the trip to Bridgeport to see that rematch. I was very interested in this week's bracket for that very reason. If Cornell pulled off the upset, I have no doubt that BU would start caring about a rivalry that many BU fans now view as anachronistic or irrelevant.

Considering that Michigan stole and modified their best chants/taunts from us, I figured that we could steal one from them if we do happen to end up playing Michigan State anytime soon. This is from an article on the environment at Yost.

I fully endorse stealing a good cheer. but I'm not sure I like this one, at least out of context. I assume that this relates to MSU being something of an ag school. It's certainly the land grant school for the state of Michigan. Even if it's just ripping on East Lansing as being rural, does it make sense for Cornellians to use this as a taunt? Seems to me like it would be chanting "you're like us!"

Just my quick impressions on that one. If I'm missing something let me know.

Funny that we're the ECAC school that that would be most appropriate for. We've done "Go staht the cahh" for Harvard, and "Go start the tank" for Army. The only time Air Force came to Ithaca was in 1993, and I don't remember if the obvious variant was used.

Reading that blog post made me go to see if I could find the usual stories we post about the Cornell-Michigan Point-of-Thievery in 1991. I found a nice article from the Michigan Daily that was written in 2010, that is probably the most detailed to date. It's a really great read, especially the subsection titled "The Turning Point."

But many of the Michigan fans were new to college hockey and didn’t know how to pass the test presented by the Cornell contingent. So, the Wolverine fans took the Big Red’s cheers.

The sting in the cheer is that they're warming it up. For example, we would chant "warm up the tank!" at Army. Nobody was criticizing them for being soldiers; it just fit.

My complaint about tractor is that single syllables work better in that cheer. For ag schools I have always been partial to "Warm up the hoe!"

You're right that it has to do with the rurality of East Lansing in part. So, it is only suspect if one views Ithaca as being as rural as East Lansing. I do not think it is.

Michigan intends it not as a jab at Michigan State being a land-grant institution (another thing that Cornell has in common with MSU). It intends it to mock Michigan State as what many Michigan fans depict as a "mere vocational school" or a "trade school." It mocks Michigan State's perceived lack of academic standards as well. It is as if one is calling Michigan State a rural safety school.

Valid point. I like "hoe" better. It works better for a crowd chanting it in unison. RPI's "that's debatable" when the opposing team returns to full strength gets incoherent because people speak at a different rate and it is exaggerated with the longer the word and the more syllables in the jeer.

Well considering that we stole the *you're not a funnel, etc.." from clarkson I believe and stole the "awwww- see ya" from Michigan I'd hardly paint them as unimaginative villains.

And yes, I was at the infamaous '91 playoff series.

Jayson initially has us in the East Regional in Bridgeport, as the #14 facing #3 U. Mass-Lowell, with...#6 Boston University facing #12 Michigan State in the other semi.

Also from the blog post:

...It's knowing what comes after "you're not a sieve, you're a funnel...". It's hoping that after thanking the PA announcer for telling us there is only one minute left in the period that he will announce "YOU'RE WELLLLLLCOME!" It's reminding the opposing goalie every time he takes his mask off that he is, in fact, ugly, and cheering him when he puts the mask back on.

Sound familiar?

I do like this section though:

Harvard was who we stole it from, though they may have picked it up from somebody else during their NCAA runs of the 80's.

In the Harvard version, they repeated the goalie's name with each iteration, so the effect was actually a little better.

As difficult as it is to imagine, there was a time when Harvard actually had a decent crowd.

With Cornell now at #13 in the PWR, the latest Bracketology has us facing #4 Miami in Bridgeport, CT in the regional semifinal, with the other Bridgeport semifinal #12 Denver vs. #5 Boston University.

I like this bracket a lot, too.

Still, let's win two in a row this weekend.

We REALLY got MSU during the '06 series with Hail to the Victors as they skated in, and a ton of "safety schools" and "if you can't go to college go to state."

Those guys HATED the crowd after the series. Gave us all the finger as they skated off. Awesome.

We beat Michigan. We should be ahead of them. And Miami lost in the first round. We should be ahead of them too.

RPI beat us. So did UMass. So did Brown. Should those teams be ahead of us?

But we beat Michigan in the playoffs. That's what counts.

Insofar as we're bothering to have a poll at this time of year voters should still be voting base don who is the best team given all of the available evidence. It shouldn't just be basedon playoff results. Small sample sizes and all.

Thought experiment. Let's say that the Air Force goalie started to channel the spirit of Ken Dryden in the tournament and managed to earn four 1-0 shut outs while his team was outshot by an average of 50-5. Air Force would then be the national champions. But given the peripherals would it make sense to vote them the #1 team in the country? I don't think so.

If you just want the final polls to follow the NC$$ tournament results then why bother havin a poll in the first place? Wait. Why do we have a poll after the tournament? :-D

I just got a call from the Sun Sports Editor. You're fired. Fortunately I also got a call from Skip Bayless and you're hired.

Seeing as how I just went from writing just 2 sports articles ever for a college newspaper to appearing on a national television show I'd say that's a pretty good deal.

Nothing wrong with a post-season poll. Starts to build interest for next year.
