WHOM to root for 3/9 - 3/12/12 (other conferences)

WHOM to root for 3/9 - 3/12/12 (other conferences)

In checking out tonight's TV schedule:

Merrimack v. Maine on Fox College Sports-Pacific. I assume root for Maine? They are ranked #10 in the PWR and Merrimack is with us at #14.

UMASS (Amherst) v. BC on NBC sports, BC so to help negate our loss to the minutemen?

Bemidji v. North Dakota, I'm guessing BSU. N.Dakota is tied for 12 in the PWR whereas BSU is at 27th. This game in on Fox College Sports-Central.

But I know it all boils down to this: Let's Go Red!!!

(edited to please the grammar police, and to clarify which Massachusettes state school is playing BC)

I don't think the Lowell-BC game matters much to us; definitely it would be nice if NoDak could drop below us in the PWR but I don't know if that's realistic even with a Bemidji sweep. Plus Merrimack already loses the tiebreaker with us for #14 based on RPI, so that also may not be essential - except to prevent them from leapfrogging us with a win.

So, yes, Maine and Bemidji. :-)

BC plays UMass, not UML. Our loss to UMass is important, and if they drop off of TUC status (currently their RPI is .5020), bully for us.

Ooh. Right. It's a fair cop.

I played around with the Build Your Own Rankings again. Ignoring other games (thus making this a very unscientific study) adding a BC sweep of UMass removes UMass as a TUC and raises Cornell to 12 in the Pairwise. Adding a Cornell sweep of Dartmouth to that makes no difference - still 12. Same if Cornell defeats Dartmouth in three. If BC defeats UMass in three, UMass stays a TUC and Cornell stays 14th even with a series win over Dartmouth.

Adding to what Rita posted, might as well cheer for Miami (9th) to beat Michigan State (t-12th).

If the tournament were seeded tonight, we'd be playing Minnesota in Minneapolis. Whee! (At least not at Mariucci...)

We're currently winning comparison against 3 teams above us in PWR and RPI, namely Michigan, Minnesota and Union. So having Yale a TUC and UMass not one can be the key to an NCAA berth. UMass is just barely out - they were still at .5001 after their loss but then a few other results knocked them down to ,4999.
I just hope we don't wind up in a ridiculous situation like playing Yale in the ECAC consolation game and not being sure if we want to beat Yale and knock them out of being a TUC.

The TUC 'cliff' can result in bizarre situations like this. The difference between a .499 RPI team and a .501 RPI team is negligible yet one affects your TUC score and the other does not.screwy

I was about to post the same thing. I'll add that we are losing to two teams below us - Denver and Michigan State - because of our lower RPI. so root for Wisconsin and Miami, respectively. Might be enough to flip the comparisons if we win and they lose. We also trail Michigan and Minnesota in RPI and are very unlikely to catch up. We win those comparisons with Common Opponents and TUC. I don't think it's possible for Michigan and Minnesota to catch our TUC winning percentage (with Yale in and UMass out) even if they win out against TUCs.

The point was more that a situation could possibly exist this year where a tie (or even a loss) in our last game might get us into the NCAA's and a win would not.
And that I sure hope that crazy situation doesn't happen this year.
