Women next year

Brandon Thomas has an interesting piece in The Ithaca Journal on the women's team, looking back at eh NCAA tournament and looking forward to next year.

By nearly replicating its breakthrough season this year, the Big Red proved it was no fluke. With that exalted reputation comes the opportunity -- and the need -- to play a more difficult non-conference schedule.

The centerpiece of that slate is none other than BU, which lost the national championship game to Wisconsin, 4-1. The Terriers are scheduled to visit Lynah Rink for a pair of games over Thanksgiving weekend.

"We're all looking forward to the rematch," White said.

The following weekend features a two-game trip to Mercyhurst, another NCAA tournament qualifier.
The timing of the BU games is unfortunate, but it's a start. A double header at MSG would have been quite something!

The rest of the article is worth reading, too.

To do a doubleheader rules out any matinee possibility for something else and maybe keeps the rental cost down. But oh, my, yes, wouldn't that be great if we could have both teams playing at MSG. This fall is the third every-other-year event and that seems like good pacing for Cornell and hopefully BU to continue. BC would be another possibility, BC has a good women's hockey program, and BC has lots of NYC area alumni.

Reasonable place for this, I guess. Only hockey person on Ivy All-Academic is Amanda Mazzotta. See Cornell Big Red for full list of student-athletes.

Digit Murphy CU'83 is out as coach of Brown's womens team. She has strong ties to the CU Women's team, just read the release. Even though you may have had great past success, a school can't live with 20 some wins in 5 years.

Looks like Cornell has another commitment for 2012-2013. BTD is reporting that Cornell has received a commitment from Kelly Murray of Medicine Hat, Alberta. Kelly plays for the Edge School in Alberta. She also played for Team Alberta last year. Team Alberta took home gold at the 2011-2012 Canada Winter Games. Kelly has also be selected this season for the Team Canada U-18 team selection camp.

What a mild sendoff from Brown's VP of Campus Life: "After 22 years at the helm of the Brown Bears, Coach Margaret "Digit" Murphy will retire from coaching the women’s hockey team. During the coming year she will work on a special archive project commemorating the many contributions of Brown's women athletes."
Why not just say "one-year severance"?

[edit add after re-reading the whole "been nice, now seeya" memo:] It sounds as if Murphy did a good job making women's hockey important at the HS and college level in RI. Title IX had only been up and running for a decade when she started coaching and organized women's sports at the HS and college levels needed people like her pushing it to the next level.

Erin Barley-Maloney, a transfer from Vermont, is now listed on Cornell's 2011-2012 roster.
