Giving to Cornell Hockey (new thread)

Here's an interesting thought.

If the Athletics Dept. budget can't be used for recruiting - does that mean that only the men's hockey gift account can be used for recruiting?

What I'm getting at here: Can the Cornell Hockey Association's money be used for recruiting?

I've been directing my money to the CHA instead of to the men's hockey gift account due to the gift "boycott" we've been holding - by buying more 50/50 tickets, etc. I don't get a tax deduction for it, but heck, for the next few years (while I'm in law school) I won't be itemizing anyway.

So what I'm wondering is - can we send (non tax-deductible) checks to the CHA, thus achieving the dual purposes of:
1) Supplying the team with much-needed recruiting money, and
2) Not giving the Athletics Department any money that they can use for anything other than hockey?

After I sent Mike a note explaining my anger at the AD and my discomfort in citing it to Shane Palahicky (who called as part of the fund-raiser), I got a reply from Mike which said, in part
[Q] Bottom line is both sides could have handled things better and I too wish they would resolve it, however I am not getting into the middle of it until the season is over. I understand your protest and respect it, however it does affect our bottom line in raising funds for recruiting and that is where all the misinformation is killing us. [/Q]
When I asked how I could support just the hockey program, he replied
[Q]Any money donated to Cornell Hockey must be spent by our program.[/Q]
I sympathize with the difficult position this matter puts him in. Fighting a vindictive AD is not a step to be taken lightly. I sent my donation check directly to Mike, marked clearly for Men's Hockey. I hope it helps.

I don't know if/how funds sent to CHA can be spent for recruiting - there are some pretty tight restrictions imposed by the NCAA and other governing bodies on booster groups. (Unlike BeeeejEsq, IANAL)

Of course, if for every dollar you donate Cornell subtracts a dollar from their general budget for hockey and increases by a dollar their general budget for new furniture in Day Hall, then you just subsidized somebody's mahogany desk.

But it sure sounds like it doesn't work that directly, since Coach says lack of donations does hurt. Sending the check directly to Mike is definitely a good approach.
