Not too long ago most of us would have read this, looked at the date, and had a good chuckle.

All invited to celebrate winter athletics successes

A celebration of Cornell's many successful winter athletics teams will be held Tuesday, April 6, in Newman Arena. The event, free and open to the public, will open its doors at 4 p.m., and the program will begin at 4:40 p.m.

In attendance will be President David Skorton, Vice President for Student and Academic Services Susan Murphy and Athletics Director Andy Noel, as well as the Cornell coaches and players.

Teams to be honored will include men's basketball, which won the Ivy League conference and made it to the Sweet 16 at the NCAA tournament; women's hockey, which played in the NCAA title game; men's hockey, which captured the ECAC tournament title; wrestling, which finished second at the NCAA championship; women's fencing, which placed 14th at the NCAA tournament; and men's and women's polo, which won the Northeast Regionals and will compete at the national tournament.

About time Skorton recognizes the athletic programs success, sort of a strange time though

Geez, you do it for one team that has a decent season, like say lacrosse last spring, and pretty soon you have to do it for every team that does okay. Slippery slope.

Seriously: You could look at it from the positive side, not "hey, it's about time," but "this is awesome, I'm glad they're doing it, it's better for our sense of community than those chain link fences across the gorge."
