Where was Ken Dryden?

Maybe I missed the explanation by Bob Costas but I don't know why Dryden wasn't one of the "final four" to light the torch in Vancouver. I know the hosers have to be pc and have two males and two females. And I know Gretzky was a lock for one of the male spots. But Steve Nash chosen for the other spot? Are you kidding me? Dryden won an NCAA title and 6 Stanley Cups. He went to an Ivy League school, excelled in his sport, and then became involved in his country's government. Nash, on the other hand, was a surfer dude at Santa Clara which I don't think even made the round of 16 during his time. Yes, he is excelling at his sport but nothing like Dryden did. Nash has two MVPs but no rings. Dryden won all kinds of awards in the NHL to go along with his 6 rings. Not even close. And I'm curiuos what Nash's "life after sport" will look like. I bet it has nothing to do with getting a law degree and getting involved in government.

Dryden would have brought diversity to the table due to his age and accomplishments. I don't buy the "we wanted to have as many sports represented as possible" line. Canada is known for one thing...hockey. Heck, they should have run their lumberjack champion up there over Nash.

Like I said earlier I probably missed the explanation. I'm guessing he just couldn't do it physically. Nothing else would make sense.

I was hoping for Leslie Nielsen.

Not only are Dryden and Gretzky the same sport, but the same province. Nash is from BC.

I thought "Gee, it would be nice to see Dryden light the flame" but it passed. Maybe they were worried he'd have a Flomax moment especially if they worried about the time waiting for the broken candle stick. "Keep politicians out of it" would be a good reason to have bounced him.

So the next time we get an Olympics I guess that would eliminate Bill Bradley, JC Watts, and Jim Bunning as possible torchbearers.

I think that's the answer to Germ's question.

I'm sure you're correct. The four were all Olympians.

He wasn't even 2nd on the list. The "hockey" representative of the Canadian dignitaries from "all walks of life" who carried the Olympic flag in was Bobby Orr. And frankly, if you want Canadian folk heroes, I'm somewhat surprised that Paul Henderson didn't show up somewhere.
