Just ran web stats for roughly the last calendar year. Thought some of you might be interested.

7,018,253 successful page requests
46,030 distinct hosts served
288.92 gigabytes transferred
(over 1GB transferred per day during the season, but down significantly since the redesign, which was one of my goals)

Busiest week: Nov 5 2006, 298,928 pages served
Busiest day: Feb 3 2007, 57,092 pages served

None of this could happen without all of you, so thanks to everyone who makes this such a fun, interesting, civil, and vibrant community.

Thanks to you! Is there a non-paypal way to help alleviate the server costs, for those of us who don't have or want a paypal account?

You don't need a PayPal account to donate.

To finish the thought ... paypal will process a payment from a credit card even if you don't have a paypal account. So you can use the "paypal donate" button.

I've just heard too many horror stories about them to be very comfortable handing over my credit card info to PayPal. That was a couple years ago, though... are they better now?

As they already mentioned, PayPal will accept just about any form of payment, even checks, with or without an account. But if people prefer snail-mail, feel free to PM me and I can provide my info. Thanks!

Other than a lack of human customer support, which got addressed (in part due to that class-action lawsuit), I've never had any problems with them. Since then PayPal bought Verisign, which handles all manner of secure and money-type things on the Intarweb, so you've probably already put your money or security in their hands whether or not you knew it.

I'm no fan of PayPal, but there's really little that's at issue if you don't have an account. Any charge to a credit card thats at issue, you can dispute with the credit card company. I would be hesitant to use a debit card or direct debit with them, but credit does offer another layer of protection.

That said, you're only *really* in potential danger with PayPal (low chance of occurrence, but bad result if it does happen) if you keep money in a PayPal account. Don't do that, and there's little they can do to you.

Maybe the metronome references can stop now that the cowbell has moved on...

Thanks to Age for providing a site that I check almost as compulsively as Facebook.

A lot of credit card companies will give you a single-use credit card number you can use for one transaction if you're afraid to give your real credit card number.
