I don't think there's any need to apologize for this. I agree with you.

O'Byrne's presence on D kept Cornell in the running during McKee's shakier periods.

More generally, I think we place too much emphasis on the goaltender and too little on how a well-executed defensive system keeps McKee from having to face too many high-percentage shots. O'Byrne is currently the finest cog in that system, yet also knows when it's safe to deviate from that for a chance at catching the opposing team off-guard.

Cheers,
Kyle

Natyshak-Paolini (career improvement) - Pegs I know McCutcheon had an amazing year, but this is improvement over career. I hope to hell he can improve upon this year and really become a force on the ice.
MacFarlane (transcendent beauty and skating prowess) - McCutcheon
Shippel-Hornby (scrappiness and effort) - Scott
Gage (supporting role) - Gleed Made some really good plays all year long, glad he finally got a goal against CC
Schafer-Bâby (leadership and passion) - Chris Abbott
Belanger-Murphy (loathed ref) - No Opinion
Carter-Moore (most respected opponent) - Elliott
Melrose-Nickerson (least respected opponent) - Eh, no comment
Dadswell-Vesce (best freshman) - Mugford With Seminoff in a close second, but loses due to bad penalties
Nieuwendyk-Murray (MVP) - Moulson I know everyone loves McKee (and I do too before people rip me apart) but I don't know where we'd be without Moulson's 18 goals this season. Next year will be fun because teams won't know who to smother at first:-P

Natyshak-Paolini (career improvement) - Pegs I know McCutcheon had an amazing year, but this is improvement over career. I hope to hell he can improve upon this year and really become a force on the ice. [/Q]

Daniel Pegoraro, F, Sr
2002-2003 35 6 10 16
2003-2004 23 1 1 2
2004-2005 35 7 16 23
2005-2006 35 5 13 18

Mark McCutcheon, RW, Jr
2003-2004 32 0 4 4
2004-2005 22 0 5 5
2005-2006 34 9 6 15

I know some people are making an argument for Pegoraro but the award is for "career improvement". Pegoraro, although a great player and contributes a lot to the team, had #'s this year that roughly match those of his freshman year and fall short of his junior year. McCutcheon, on the other hand, completely improved from going from 0 career goals to 9, 3 of them game winners, 2 shorthanded, and most of them extremely timely.

How many of those 60 SOG were high-percentage shots? What percentage would it have been had we CC's defense (for instance)? These are highly-relevant questions, and even though I don't have answers to them, they certainly are more insightful than your quip.

Pegs was nearly off the team by his sophomore year due to weak work ethic. He decided to turn it around, and didn't just earn his spot back, but became a solid contributor in most aspects of the team's play. I think Mark has matured steadily over the last 3 years. If he steps up big as a senior, then he would deserve it. To me, one season does not a career make.

Also, comparing year-to-year stats should take into account other elements of the team. For instance, we lost some defense after 05 in both defensemen and forwards. Does Pegs' role shift in 06 to acommodate that while opening up opportunites for Mark? 06 scoring was down around 12% vs 05 (if I added correctly), while McCut played more games in 06 giving him more opportunity to score.

Natyshak-Paolini (career improvement): The career thing implies a complete career to me, so a senior it is: Gleed
MacFarlane (transcendent beauty and skating prowess): For his one gorgeous, fake everyone out goal: McCutcheon
Shippel-Hornby (scrappiness and effort): For never giving up and trying to fight people a foot taller than him: Topher
Gage (supporting role): Tough one. The obvious choice is Louis Chabot, but, this season he's actually seen playing time, thus giving him some recognition and something to play for. I'll put my vote in for: Carefoot
Schafer-Bâby (leadership and passion): Chris Abbott
Belanger-Murphy (loathed ref): Because I never notice who the ref is: no nomination
Carter-Moore (most respected opponent): The game was so good, it pushes out memories of all other respected opponents: Elliott and the Badgers
Melrose-Nickerson (least respected opponent): Coach, for throwing his clipboard: Clarkson's George Roll. Team, for an ugly post-game confrontation: MSU. Individual: no opinion at the moment
Dadswell-Vesce (best freshman): Mugford and Seminoff. Both are improving quickly, and I think Seminoff is starting to take less stupid penalties.
Nieuwendyk-Murray (MVP): I like ugarte's nominee. For no longer scaring me when he's got the puck in the defensive end, for solid devensive play, for being there during the great games and absent during most of the bad ones: O'Byrne

Natyshak-Paolini (career improvement): The career thing implies a complete career to me, so a senior it is: Gleed

To clarify, juniors and seniors are eligible for the N-P. Obviously, that doesn't stop a particular nominator from specifying his or her personal criteria.
