Holding spots in line as opposed to exchanging tickets

Okay, I'm kind of unclear on this year's procedures. Somebody told me that, theoretically, if I'm number 500, and my friend is number 600, I'm allowed to "hold" my spot in line until my friend gets his seat and row, and then I can select along with him. Is this true? Can I wait to select my row until my friend does, or do I have to get my seat when it is my turn?
should I just try to exchange line numbers/tickets?
any insight is greatly appreciated

The last two years anyways, you could delay your selection until the highest number in the group you are selecting with. I can only assume this year will be the same, especially with people more spread out than they have been in the past.

I can see it now....
Everyone in the first few hundred has friend in the last 300, so they all wait....the "new" front of the line has their friends in the first few hundred, but they're not all waiting for their friend at 1148, so they must wait as well now...
