There will be a Memorial Service on Saturday, 5/21, according to the link. His body was recovered on 5/10.

How can the investigators ever really distinguish? There were obviously no witnesses.

There was no pattern of events (a note, general depression, offhand comments, etc...) to indicate a suicide.
