Union's captain is out with a lacerated spleen.

1. That's gotta feel pretty below average.
2. How? Did he wake up in an ice-filled bathtub in Uruguay?

A quick count shows that at even strength the Vesce line has one more goal than the other three lines combined.

Edit: Oops, make that two more.

The first period is over. It was not the most physical or inspired period of hockey for the Big Red, which struggled with the Union trap.

1-0 Union after one.

No physical play.

Union's trap not as effective as Brown's but still causing real difficulties on breakout.

First period: Union got the only goal on a mistake by newly-minted center Carefoot. Mayotte made some fair point blank saves against Cornell, but our only really good even strength chance was a rebound shot (Hynes?) that just trickled past him and off the outside left post.

Union definitely out-hustled (and out-trapped) Cornell for the full period. The only pp was Cornell's -- they cycled well and had two great chances, in both cases a backdoor pass to Knoepfli jumped his stick at the last second.

We looked slow, overconfident, and several hundred times more talented than Union, proving that talent < hustle. We better step it up.

Tonight's lines:
Moulson-Vesce-Bitz
Abbott-Abbott-Hornby
Knoepfli-Carefoot-Hynes
Varteressian-Iggulden-McCutcheon
Downs-O'Byrne
Glover-Gleed
Salmela-Cook

Edit: Glover and Cook have played together, too.
Cornell is playing with much more energy early in the second period than it did in the first period.

Abbotts-Hornby line look good; they nearly scraped up a few chances and Cam looked especially good.

First line looks bad so far -- they are most significantly affected by the trap, which is awkward and ugly but so far very frustrating; we haven't had the oomph to skitter around it or the hitting to roll over it.

The absence of hitting is probably the biggest surprise, and for it the team looks asleep. Somehow I think that will last at most one Hornby shift into the second period.

Although Cornell didn't score in the second period, almost the entire period was played in the offensive zone, except for the Union power plays. Cornell only had one great scoring opportunity: a 2-on-0 shorthanded breakaway with Ryan Vesce and Jeremy Downs. Ryan blew a tire and couldn't get a shot off.

Lynah's a tomb tonight.

That was a much better period, with the Red getting more pressure. The UC pp's wasted the middle 10 minutes of the period.

Varterressian clobbered a couple of UC guys (the second leading to a penalty), as did Hornby and O'Bryne.

I expect UC to come out in turtle formation and Cornell to spend the third pounding away at Mayotte. So far Mayotte has had the right combo of luck and skill to stone them.

Thoughts on game..

*We played very badly. worry We had noo motivation.. could it be because Ben was off? I think we played terribly. Once in a while we played well, hustled, things of that nature, but we really needed much more energy. But on the bright side, a tie is better than a loss.. it really is. But I'm kinda sick of freakin tieing every game..

First, a question: anyone know what happened to Pegoraro tonight? Obviously, as you all know already, Varteressian was in for him, subsequently shuffling the third and fourth lines a bit.

Now, some comments:

- I think I'm in the minority with this opinion, but the Union goal was really just a lucky bounce off Cook's stick. The puck was deflected slightly right of where McKee expected it to go.
- Union had a pretty good defense, and it was present throughout most of the game. Keeping Cornell to one goal really was no fluke.
- Varteressian is an animal. He was out there busting heads (not literally) for most of the game. He's like the Hornby of old, only bigger.
- Our defense was solid for the whole game.
- Can anyone give any more details on the waved-off goal? We all heard "crease violation" but was that true?

I thought I heard Adam say something about Pegoraro being "banged up." Schafer specifically mentioned that Wallace was hurt.

Couldn't tell on the internet TV broadcast what happened on the waved-off goal, and there's no slo-mo replay.

My thought from seeing the wave-off on the netcast was that the net was pushed off before the light went on. Now, that doesn't mean it was pushed off before the puck actually crossed the line (something you couldn't see very well online).

My initial impression was that it was going to be waved off, but I tend towards pessimism.

I think we escaped a team playing at the top of their game in front of a hot goalie, and still eeked out a point. I'll take it -- we could easily have left both points on the ice. Also, RPI lost and Dartmouth tied, so while it would have been nice to gain more ground against those >.500 rivals, at least we lost no ground.

The goal was called off because of a man in the crease. Although I'm at the other end, it looked possible to me, we had guys right out in front. How about anybody in A, thoughts?

I thought we played the first 3/4's like we did at Brown, uninspired. We seem to have forgotten how to hit and work the corners.[Q]One of the guys who got revenge on Volonnino wrote:

He seemed to want to make the most of his opportunity, and was one of the best hitters. However, taking Carefoot off the fourth line definately made that line less effective. We need to get back to basics, hit, work the corners, and get the kind of goals that we scored tonight. All year it seems that we know we have better offensive talent than in past years and try and finese it instead of working hard.

One last thing. The talk has been how we had 5 games in hand and needed 7 points, now it's 4 and 6. However, we really needed 8 points, now 7, because Brown has the season series with us. Getting 7 points in the next 4 games will be tough, very tough. We also have to look for Dartmouth not to pass us, those series will be very important.

A second last thing, after it's all said and done, they are alot further ahead than I thought they would be at this point. Being able to think about first is more than I expected this year.

We also seem to miss a lot of nets... at times it seems that everyone's trying to put the puck in the top corner of the net, rather than shooting it low and through traffic. Another result of that is that a lot of our shots that do get on net are right at the goalie's chest. (Moulson had a very good attempt at tipping a point shot, and Hynes takes up the front of the net well, but it'd be nice to station players there more often, like Bitz.)

McCloud also didn't play... when's the last time he was in the lineup? He and Pegoraro came over to watch some of the third period at the edge of section B (they didn't really blend in in their suits and slicked hair).

What do people think of Salmela? He seems to be out there for his heavy shot from the point (and because we can't seem to get Gleed and Wallace healthy at the same time). I haven't seen him do much on D, but I haven't seen him make any grotesque mistakes eithers.

The Vesce breakaway seems to indicate that the hockey gods have decreed that we'll never score a shorty again... help

7 of the next 8 points does look very difficult, but Mike should be able to get the message across that it's just one shift at a time. The problem last night was: Union won most of the shifts. Unthinkable, but true.

We tied a team that followed their coach's game plan on defense with a deep trap. He just installed it for us. Union goalie was exceptional, and we missed about four "sure"goals ' by inches. Although we looked back on our heels for the first and part of the second periods, we played good defense, and could have won. That's hockey! There was a time it looked like we would get beat 1-0. I'll take the point, bring on RPI!!

Saw Salmela play live in Estero ( and TV vs. Harvard) and thought he looked very steady out there. He doesn't seem to be making the freshman mistakes or committing bad penalties, which I've seen from O'Byrne and to a lesser extent Glover. The others may have more upside (certainly the Habs think that with O'Byrne), but at this point I like what I've seen from Salmela.

Gotta agree about Salmela. I hope he has a chance to play once Wallace is back to 100% (assuming all the other defensemen are also at 100%).

Regarding McLeod, I just checked the box scores from collegehockeystats.com and he's not mentioned once (not even for US Under-18). I also checked the roster flyers handed out at the Red & White game, and he is mentioned there, playing for the Red team. Unfortunately for him, he's probably at the bottom of the forwards list, after Varteressian.

Sitting in N the waved off goal was because we had bodies in the crease; (Hynes) - crowd's reaction because of the bit late on the wave off it looked like the wave off was 'cause net was off - but puck had crossed line just prior to net getting knocked off. A very close and I think correct call.

We were slow getting our legs moving in first two periods. Paul V. did hit hard, but took two penalties that slowed down any momentum we had. Team was not clicking on passes and several times under trap pressure big red iced puck or just flipped it up boards without looking and in at least three cases I can think of gave it to UC... We were lucky they also failed to find the handle a couple of times. Union team played hard and disciplined and cut off our passing lanes well on the trap and we didn't seem to adjust well.

We did control the puck and cycled well many times once in the offensive zone - we just didn't get the puck in the net. The Abbott/Abbott/Hornby line as usual semmed to have the most energy. Our power play had a couple of close opportunities in first period but we still don't seem to move the puck quickly and w/ authority. Evan S. has a quick release and tends to keep his power play point shots low enough to give good re-direct opportunites.

Also noticed that their capt. #19 and strong sophmore center #24 were winning alot of faceoffs... And Ryan was waved out multiple times in first half of game....

Here's hoping we come out flying tonight as RPI will be I'm sure after the loss to Colgate. Go BIG Red!!

Thanks for the info! :-)

For the record, Varteressian only took one penalty in this game, for charging. The other two Cornell penalties were Glover for interference and Cam Abbott for contact to the head-elbowing. (That last one I didn't see, and in retrospect, I wonder how the heck it could have happened.) All of these penalties occurred in the second period.

Here's Schafer's opinion of the waved off goal from the Ithaca Journal [www.ithacajournal.com]:

"It was no question a goal," Schafer said. "We watched the video after the game. And Mitch Carefoot was covered by a defenseman, drives him into the goal crease. I have no idea what the official was looking at."

Adam and his sidekick (whose name I can never remember) felt it was an OK hit. Always hard to tell what really happened on the internet video broadcast.

In one of the great ironic moments, McLeod is playing his debut college game tonight. :-P

"Even the band was not up to speed. There were many breaks where they just did nothing. Somehow they have to get it together and get the rest of the crowd going. At the end it was so bad that I actually started yelling "Townies up"."

There were several reasons for there being empty breaks:

1. There were at least two breaks where there should have been annoucements (hence the band is not supposed to play), but somehow those announcements got delayed. Also, there seemed to be fewer announcements in general last night.

2. There was no opposing band, and hence our band is required to play twice as much. The conductor tries to balance the amount of music without repeating the same cheers over and over.

3. Conductors are switched every semeseter and this was the first home game for the new conductors (i.e. me). I, along with the other conductor, am just getting used to the differences between playing with other bands and playing with no opposing bands.

I assure you that I, like most of the fans, love it when the band plays, so I'll try and make sure the band plays more in the future.
