while cornell has been ranked the #1 team in the land in recent years, I can't remember the last time (a) Cornell played the #1 team; or (b) beat the #1 team?
any thoughts?

A couple times. Last year when they played BC in Florida, they were #1 at the time. In 01-02 when they played UNH in the NCAA Tournament, they were #1.

I thought that was '03 when we played UNH in the NCAA tourney as the #1 team. Maybe we're talking of two different times?

Great question. I'll add rankings to the TBRW schedule and db, but that will take a while.
IIRC, Denver was #1 when Cornell "won" game 2 of the total goals series in the 1986 NCAAs, but lost the series.
Off the top of my head, RPI and Harvard are the only opposing ECAC teams I recall making it to #1 (in 85 and 89 respectively), and we lost all those games. I don't think either North Country teams actually topped out at #1. The best bet is a non-conference game.
In the NCAAs, there haven't been any recent huge upset wins. Michigan couldn't have been a #1 in 1991, because they didn't get a first round bye.
I'm guessing Denver '86 is the last time Cornell defeated the #1 team, and even that is tainted.

Yes, you are.
In 01-02, Cornell was #9 and UNH was #1.
In 02-03, Cornell was #1 and UNH was #4.

Wasn't Vermont ranked #1 a while in 96 or 97? I recall that was early season until RPI beat them.

I believe the national polls had Maine at #1 when we played (and lost to) them in the Everblades in 2002.

Another possible game vs a #1 is the 11-0 loss vs CC in '96.

What about Michigan on January 7, 1997 (a 3-3 tie at Yost)? I think, but I am not sure, that the Wolverines were ranked #1 at the time.

I'm 99% sure that UVM was #1 in the very early season in '97 (I lived in VT at the time). A couple of preseason favorites had early stumbles, and they had the Perrin/St Louis hype going.jy3

CC in 95-96 and Michigan in 96-97 were both ranked #1 when they played the Big Red.

Yes, Michigan was #1 at the time. Good game, I was there as a Michigan MBA student. I took a little heat for wearing my Cornell hockey hat.cbuckser

Vermont was briefly #1 when Michigan lost early in the season to Michigan State at Munn. Didn't last too long as I recall.Chris 02

Is there a way to go back further and aggregate the result vs. #1, vs. top 5, vs. top 10? Would be interesting to see. I'm sure that you have a day job other than TBRW, just asking.Trotsky
