Cornell-bound Joe Scali beat Cornell-unbound (ok, Denver-bound) Marc Cheverie in OT last night. Scali's game-winner helped the Alberni Valley Bulldogs pull even with the Nanaimo Clippers for the Island Division lead.

Alberni Valley's Brian Stewart is having an incredible year as he leads the BCHL with a 2.02 GAA (.929). I don't know what kind of student Stewart is but he's currently uncommitted.

I don't know Stewart's academic background but if Cornell needs a 6' 4" tendie who moves as quick as a cat, he's the guy. And yes, Joe Scali with a thrilling OT winner. Wicked!

Update Jan 1/06: Bulldogs goaltender Brian Stewart has committed to Northern Michigan University. Alberni Valley head coach Jim Hiller was a Wildcat. Stewart is presently sporting a 1.99 GAA and continues to impress everyone. With his size I wouldn't be surprised to see him turn pro.

As for Joe Scali, he is rehabbing a sore knee suffered against the Chiefs on Dec. 4. His dad says Joe is likely back before the end of January.

The Bulldogs are now 7 points up on the Nanaimo Clippers with the Clips' having 3 games in hand. However, Nanaimo lost 2 of 3 games this weekend while Alberni Valley swept their home-and-home with Powell River Kings. The Bulldogs have now won 12 games in a row - uncharted territory for the franchise.

Two uncommitted Bulldog players to watch: Jordan Kremyr & Bradyn Melrose.

So, how's Doug Krantz doing?

Stewart just seems to be playing better and better, at least statistically.

Joe was listed as having played in Friday's game -- true or a typo? Is the knee structurally ok? Two months rehabbing a "sore" knee doesn't sound good.

I like Melrose's size -- though I'm more anxious over a goalie, maybe another defensive player in this class. Cornell's losing 4 F/Cs, assuming no one leaves early, and has 5 lined up for next year.

I like Doug...I'd love to see him get a bit more assertive. He shows flashes, then disappears (which sounds like the team thus far).

It sounds like you're up that way: Have you seen Brad Thiessen play?

Yeah, I saw Thiessen play here in Alberni Valley on September 29th. Unfortunately for him, he let in 8 goals as the Bulldogs & Stewart posted an 8-0 win.
But I'm not really "up that way" as Thiessen's team is the Prince George Spruce Kings and PG is about a 9 hour drive from Port Alberni...Coastal and Interior Division teams only play each other twice (one roadie, one homer)...
If Thiessen isn't committed, he would be worth pursuing I think...

Joe Scali will reportedly be back in fine form, he is a horse and is taking the necessary time and usual precautions. He has a promising hockey career that shouldn't be gambled by rushing back too soon. Better to err on the side of caution.

Yeah that Bradyn Melrose is HUGE, kinda reminds me of a Bertuzzi-type player, using his big frame to curl around guys with one hand on the stick. Plus he has a laser of a snapshot. I don't know what academic level he's at but if Cornell can get them in, grab Melrose and Kremyr.

I've driven through BC a few times doing the Alcan thing -- I'd forgotten how big the Province really is (and it is).

Good news on Joe. It's good to hear they're not rushing him back.

Thanks for the update.
