WOW! Now that should make Sportscenter!

He's Minny's leading scorer too...

Can you say Nervous Breakdown? I want to hear the story behind the story on this one....I wonder if USCHO has any info in the forums

so I clicked on the video first...big mistake...I was laughing at first when I realized the goal was empty and then cringed when he went barrelling into the cage...I hope the kid is okay and I really hope we don't have to play them for a bunch of reasons

So the website hosting the video clip (a Gopher fan site) pulled the file for obvious reasons.

Anybody have it cached on their computer from viewing it the other day? I don't, but I'd be happy to host it for a week to make sure all our fans get the chance to see it. It really is one of the funnier things I've seen in a while (assuming the kid actually is okay).

The first time it was funny. By the third time it was sad. Assuming it was not a psych-out-the-opponents stunt (Mike Schafer's cracking a pre-sawn stick over his head), he's got some real serious issues to deal with.

In a selfish sense it couldn't have come at a better time for Cornell, but I think we'd rather beat a Minnesota team that's whole (assuming we get past OSU and Minnesota gets past Maine.) If Minnesota folds on the first day, I think the Cornell fans can have their pick of seats Sunday.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here. We still have to get past Ohio State, and even if we are favored to do so, neither Minnesota nor Maine will be pushovers. And let's not forget that Maine is one of the few teams to actually put three goals past McKee in a single game this season (along with Boston College and--I still can't believe I'm saying this--Princeton). Cornell may be just four wins away from a national title, but those four wins will likely be the hardest games of these players' lives thus far.

I do believe the requested caveat immediately preceded the single sentence reproduced above:

It seemed as if once for two sentences was enough. Also, the post didn't guarantee the Cornell ice hockey team would be playing Sunday. It suggested that Cornell ice hockey fans, who are of course true fans of the game, would be there and would have their pick of seats if the not-so-golden Gophers got picked off Saturday.

Truce?

On first sight this was one of the funnier things I’ve ever seen at a hockey rink … but on second thought, it’s what in the hell would cause a 21-year-old accomplished D1 hockey player to pull such a stunt that really concerns me. I’m sure many people (probably mostly Maine fans at the moment) are thinking, “Well at least they won’t have their leading scorer” but that’s a crappy way to win IMHO. Not knowing his situation we can only hope he’s doing all right. Sorry for the semi-rant but something about laughing at that just doesn’t sit well with me.
carry-on :-)

It gets more disturbing.

This was posted on USCHO. I tried to find an original, substantiated report but could not. If this is rumor-passing, I apologize in advance.

- - - -

3/23/05

Hirsch Hospitalized with Nervous Breakdown

...

Those reports indicate that Hirsch had become deeply influenced by the film “The Passion of the Christ,” the controversial Mel Gibson-directed film about the last 12 hours of the life of Jesus of Nazareth.

We’re also told that the 21-year-old had told his teammates that, “We have to get the devil out of the building” and words to that effect.

Reportedly, Hirsch was also crying on the bench during Friday night’s game.
- - - -

Three observations:

1) As a parent, I really hope this kid and his family (who are going to need it just as much) get the therapy they need, and that this story has a positive ending.

2) If you're seeing Satan skulking around the Zamboni door anywhere but Harvard (where he has an endowed chair), your rational powers have been put on waivers.

3) Culturally revealing how the article seems to endorse a male crying on the bench as a sign of incipient nuttiness.

Well, I notice that the article doesn't mention exactly when during the game he was crying. If it was during warm-ups or something, that'd be a little odd.

It's also a male hockey player. Culturally revealing perhaps, but I suspect that crying on the bench is pretty rare among male college hockey players.

It seems to be a moot point now, but if he played, I don't see why he shouldn't be fair game. If Hirsch, his family, and his doctors are ok with him playing, there has to be some accountability to go with that. If there really is a problem, he shouldn't be playing. Should we not pick on anyone on the off chance we might exacerbate some nascent condition. It would be horribly irresponsible to let him play if there's a problem, and that's where the culpability ends.

As another example, if a guys sister committed suicide, would you think it OK to taunt him about that? Now those are just examples but I hope you get my idea. It reminds me of some of our fans who were booing HVD after we had beaten them. In poor taste, IMHO.

If a guy has a funny looking apple, is it ok to make fun of his oranges? I don't think we're talking depression here. Either he checked his marbles at the door or he's just an idiot. I don't think it's the latter, so I don't think he should be playing, since it was a hockey game that made him snap.
