Cowbell Apology

I feel terrible that it was so bad tonight. I really was shocked that it was so bad considering I had been practicing a few times a day for the last couple weeks and it had been perfect every time. After thinking about it, I figured out what went wrong. When I was practicing, I would not extend my arms up high like I did during the game. As I figured out, doing it with your arms fully extended is much harder. I VOW to improve and eventually perfect it within a month. Again, deep apologies.

I am really confused. Why was there cowbell tonight? Red-White?

It's very big of you to acknowledge and accept your mistake Ari. Keep practicing; I know you'll get it right soon.

Were you practicing at full volume? Another thing which has tripped up aspiring cowbellers is that when you really whack the hell out of the thing, the beater rebounds a lot farther, which can screw up your timing for the next strike if you haven't been hitting it as hard in practice?

I wouldn't worry about it much; it was your first time.

Hell, the first time Age did it at a real game, he killed a litter of puppies.

The "cowbell song" is off. You are adding too many hits at the end of it.

Also, you played it during the first period. If I am not mistaken, it is only played halfway between the second and third periods...

Well, first of all, why should it ONLY be played at certain times? The only rule is whenever the guy/girl with the bell wants to break it out, he/she can do so. Many on this board have only been around for Age's tenure, and thus only know his timing and style. Heck, in my freshman year, I seem to remember the band being the only source of the cowbell cheer. Personally, I like the fact that a member of the student section has it.

As for the hits at the end, it was hard for me to hear, but I think Ari tends to finish like the "orignal" cowbell cheer.

Great job Ari. Speaking of the "original" cowbell, didn't somebody (Jeff Kahn??) actually record it and post it (.wav file?) here or on CHDF? I couldn't find it. But, if the original poster could find it and re-post it, it might clear up some of the "original" discussion before it starts.

The original cowbell recording is on ELynah at the link RichH posted above. That's not what Ari was doing. It was just a different cadence in the last measure, which I suppose he's free to change if he wants to, but if he wants to keep the one used for the last 10 or so years, Jamie's recording is at the same link and I've been meaning to put mine up too.

I don't know if the cowbell was as loud as it could have been, but that's only because in the E-F-G end of the rink, people tend to increase the tempo of, well, everything, not knowing that most of our cheers are supposed to maintain constant tempo throughout the cheers.

I agree on the tempo issue. We all are/were ivy league students, I'd like to think we could keep a simple beat It's actually something thats been bothering me the last few years, just i don't know what to do about it.

...and the quick petering out of "Let's Go Red!" is a little sad, again.

We must just have a bunch of drummers in the crowd.

Hi everyone!
I thought I'd check in here.
When I originated the cheer in '68, Ken Dryden was in the goal for his senior year. The following year we went 29-0. It's hard to believe how LONG ago that was!! I realize that many years have gone by and the current cheer being played may not sound exactly like the original, but it's a tradition now, so who can complain?

If there are purists out there, (and it appears that there are some retro fans)... I recorded the audio clip for elynah exactly as I played it from '68 to '72, and on the same bell. It's there as a reference (thanks Age). I played it whenever the moment seemed right (a gestalt kind of thing), not necessarily at any prescribed time or in any particular period. It seemed to work out.
