New Idea for college students

I was watching a college basketball game last night and it me thinking. What if during cornells penatly kills, the college students jumped and chanted ooooooooooooooo, (like when the college basketballs home team is on defence) I think its a good idea and would get our guys going and annoy the other team. let me know what u guys think.

While I certainly would love such an idea, something tells me that would distract most of the players on the ice. (Maybe not the Vermont players...they'd be more turned on by a barnyard...)

Well, that's up to the students if they want to do that, but I wouldn't want the faithful to have to resort to ripping off something TV-mugging college basketball fans do. Also, the Harvard (sucks) student section was doing this exact thing this year in Cambridge. Their plan was to do that until their pathetic team cleared the puck in a SH situation, but they looked pretty silly when Cornell kept the puck in the attacking zone for just about the entire penalty. And they stopped doing that althogether after CU scored our 2nd PPG. I certainly don't want to copy anything those losers do.*

* Of course, I know it's general knowledge that "black hole" came from Sucks, newspapers are from U of Scranton squeakball, and "See ya" has its roots from Duke basketball via Michigan hockey.

some friends and i during the colgate game at lynah, anytime 'gate brought the puck into the attacking zone on the powerplay, started a let's go red chant. once it picked up around the sections (especially d,e,f nearest us) it sounded pretty good. then once cornell cleared everyone would cheer, and the chant would start again when 'gate brought it back across our blue line. i think this was during the first 5 on 3 so it was a pretty important kill

It used to be pretty common for the whole crowd -- students and townies -- to do the let's go red cheer throughout (or at least through the first minute or so) of a penalty kill late in a close game. Of course, this was a lot less nerve-wracking when Randy MacFarlane would steal the puck and rag it for the full two minutes.

unfortunately it seems some of this year's season ticket holders can't concentrate on the game for more than a minute..let alone an entire penalty kill

that is a true statement. if i hear one more time about a damn sorority party and who she saw and who did that and why this happened i am gonna puke.

'Twas ever thus, think of it as a harbinger of Spring. And eye candy is a bandwagoneer, so the alternative is worse.

Another one for us to steal:

Hobart lax fans used to go "goooooal tiiiiime...goooooal tiiiiime..." incessantly whenever their team had the ball and were setting up the attack in the opponent's defensive end. It's harder to do in hockey since the attack is usually much less deliberate than in lax, but it would work when we're moving the puck around on the power play.

The one cheer I found annoying at the EHC Eisbären Berlin match I attended was repeatedly yelling "Hinein!" ("In there!" during the powerplay. On the other hand, I liked the penalty kill cheer, which consisted of singing "Unterzahl, Unterzahl, Unterzahl" ("shorthanded" to the tune of "Stars and Stripes Forever" (a staple of European sports fan songs) and ending with "Unterzahl ... scheißegal!" ("shorthanded ... doesn't fucking matter!" Although I'd be afraid it would anger the hockey gods to be that confident in your penalty kill.

BTW, is goooooooal tiiiiiime like Big Red Touchdown Time?

John, I'm pretty sure I know the tune you're thinking of (it's the same one to which the Liverpool soccer fans sing their team name), but I don't think the name is "Stars and Stripes Forever". Same era and mood (and maybe even same composer -- John Phillip Sousa?), but different tune.

Either way, I'm all for starting a new cheer to that "Liverpool" tune, as long as it's not in German... And doesn't mention venereal diseases... And doesn't contain a long "DIEEEEE"... And, well, just brings something fresh and different back into the mix. I thought "LeNeveu" fit that tune rather nicely, but it didn't really catch on when I gave it a shot at the ECACs in Albany last spring. Maybe there's some other trisyllabic word out there that would work well.

(Sorry to diverge from the original subject, O.P.)

It is "Stars & Stripes Forever." Tho nothing jumps to mind to sing to it other than the traditional " 'Here we go, here we go, here we go" My guess is if it isn't scatalogical it won't catch on

Boston College does this when shorthanded and the puck enters their zone.

You guys were absolutely right. It is "Stars and Stripes Forever". I didn't realize that there were two separate tunes or sections in it.

Well, so, is there anything we can get going to that tune? It's a great one, and goes very nicely with singing something at a game... Is "Here We Go, Here We Go, Here We Go" the only thing we can think of? It would be nice to chant a particular player's name to it, but players are only around for three or four years, so a song that achieves critical mass can soon go the way of the dodo (we need look no further than the Bâby song, which was a complete gem). There also aren't a lot of guys on the team with names that would fit nicely into it, either. ("Dave McKee, Dave McKee, Dave McKee"... ? Meh.)

There were a lot of quiet periods of time this weekend (like every weekend this year it seems) when you could hear people without raised voices only a few rows over (bad) and the conversations that they were having (worse).

"Let's Go Red" was at its weakest, lasting only a few times for each chant. It snowballed and got weaker throughout the game. I'm sure I heard "Ya-le...sucks!" about 12 times too. I'm up for "oooooo"-ing if it's going to spice things up...ideas!

Noticed this too....although the chants (or orders, rather) of "Bend Over" managed to last over a minute a couple times!

As a prominent person in the Cornell hockey community pointed out after the game, shouting "Bend Over!" during play proves you aren't watching the game. The goalie's only standing upright when play is in his team's offensive zone, which means while Cornell is trying to keep the puck out of its net, a lot of fans are gleefully ignoring the game and watching the other end.

I know, at least it was noise and it lasted a while. It's a shame all the bend overs weren't Let's Go Reds! instead, but maybe the crowd will come around.

I don't think it's dogs and cats living together -- something is better than nothing. It was mentioned, so I'm passing on that at least one of the hockey people in the program hated it. Take it or leave it.

Well, OOTG, someone has to be keeping their eyes on the goalie and away from the action or nobody would know when the goalie actually got into a crouch.

Personally, I would prefer an ongoing singsong of the goalie's name rather than "Bend Over" repeated incessantly. It's got a better chance of getting under the goalie's skin especially accompanied by a hand wave. Unfortanately, someone made it difficult to keep these kind of harassment going, because the established norm is to do it three times with alternating sucks, and then shout "Let's go Red!"

No offense guys, but there are a lot of people on this board who want spontaneity, but then insist that cheers be done in a certain way, at a certain time, or a certain goal differential. You can't have both.

Besides, if you want new cheers or different ones than we do now, bitching on eLynah is not the way to make them happen. You have to actually do it at Lynah, and take the chance that you might go down in flames (or be so drunk that you don't care, as was the case with the "Screw BU, _____, too" cheer). That and you have to be persistent. New cheers don't catch on the first time they're tried. It takes a few games.

I used to get upset that the remote goalie cheer was slashed down to just the skating, turning, and bending over part. While I wish I wasn't the only one yelling out, "drink, sweep, tap..." I still felt the sustained "bend over" chants were achieving our main goal. There were multiple times Gartner did a half lean with his hands on his knees just to spite us. The instant he does that, we know we're in his head (Boucher's pelvic thrust).

I was actually pretty proud of the fans during the Yale game. It's been pretty damn quiet in Lynah this year and we're finally starting to step up (although it still leaves much to be desired). If only we could find a way for the three rows of sorority girls in front of me to focus their energy for talking about cute boys on hockey cheers instead. One of them spent about half the game with her back to the ice so she could talk to her friends in the row behind her...now THAT'S not watching the game.

If you got a few of your friends around you to start a "Watch the game! Watch the game!" cheer, it might have the desired effect.

Or how about "Hey sorority beatch. The boyfriend you've been talking about all game called. He said...you suck. Badly"

Yeah, we probably don't want to have him wondering things that don't involve stopping the puck.

I do think it would be a good idea if we were to extend our "Deep in the Heart of Texas" chant that we sing at the beginning of the 2nd period, at least one more pair of lines:

"The stars at night - are big and bright (clapclapclap...)
Deep in the heart of Texas.
The prairie sky - is wide and high (clapclapclap...)
Deep in the heart of Texas."

The extra two lines will make the cheer longer, should be just as catchy, and more and more people will be able to pick up on it and remember.

How anything that #$%^@#$% LAME became a fan favorite is beyond me. Keep in mind that it's also sung at about half speed - definitely a funeral dirge effect. Not that the Davy lyrics are particularly rousing, but still...

"The Eyes of Texas" is used by UT as either their Alma Mater or their fight song (I don't know which). It's a great song, but it probably might be a bit weird if we sang another school's song, regardless of whether we'll ever face them on the ice (my money's on "we won't".

Again, I'm all for songs that are dedicated to a particular player, but they're only going to last as long as the player's with us, unfortunately (I think the Bâby song should have stayed, in the same form, even after his departure). Let's at least start getting something going to the "Stars and Stripes Forever" tune. Now that I see that someone else on the board doesn't think it's a horrible idea to do "Dave Mc-Kee", I may just try to fire it up.

I couldn't agree with you more. I think that was my all-time favorite cheer.

Even if we changed Bâby to Hornby, or any other player... I loved that cheer!! ...Y'think we *can* bring it back?

Actually, I think I remember someone posting here that they wouldn't be surprised if Bâby comes back as an assistant coach. So there's hope that the song will rise once again

If Bâby were to return as an assistant coach, it probably wouldn't happen for a few years. I'm sure Bâby wants to see how far he can take his professional hockey career before considering a career as a coach.

IIRC, Schafer was the one who said he'd like to have Bâby back as an assistant. I don't recall ever hearing whether Bâby himself thought that was a good idea...

Either way, there's still hope for the cheer :D
