<energetic and rallyful>
hi all
due to my impending busy intern year next season, friends and i are going to be making the remaining away trips this year - capital district, dartmouth and the flee-ers, and our travel partner. the cornell ticket office still has tix for onion/rip and dc/uvm. starr still has plenty of $5 general admission and will do will call for ya. tickets to all 5 games will cost $41. add another $40 each for 3 people hotels in burlington and the hanover area. come and join us so we can cheer on our big red. only one more season after this year to go to the Gut and cheer the Red on to an ECAC victory. anyone else making these trips? if not, come on!
:-D

My friends and I will likely make the trips to Colgate and Union/RPI, but I'm not sure we're gonna do UVM/Dartmouth just because it's a long trip if there's not a lot to do up there (please, somebody prove me wrong, I love to make hockey trips).

I'll be at the Dartmouth game. It's only an hour from where I live. I'll be with two kids in the "family" section (great deal for 4 tix, 4 dogs, 4 sodas...only $40) which is only two sections over from the visitor section.

See ya

Too bad the Cornell-Dartmouth game is the first weekend in Feb. and not the 2nd. Winter Carnival is that weekend, and is always a blast (not quite as big as Homecoming anymore, though, as the Administration has really ruined Winter Carnival).

And I really shouldn't tell you guys this, as I'd get a kick out of people from Ithaca getting shut out at the doors after a 6-hour drive, but I truly do suggest you guys buy your tickets ahead of time for the Dartmouth game. Not to say that you would absolutely get shut-out, but I wouldn't want to risk it. The days of being able to walk into a half empty Thompson Arena are no more, at least this year. The only games I don't think will at least come close to selling out are the RPI/Union games next weekend.

I just bought 5 tix for VT/DC at the Cornell ticket office. It didn't look like there were too many left, so if you're looking for them, I would get them soon.

I live in Burlington but I spend most of my winter weekends leaving town to go watch Cornell hockey. But here are some suggestions:

Ben&Jerry's does have factory tours on Saturdays but they don't make ice cream that day so it's not quite as interesting. You still get free samples. :-) Stop by the Cabot Cheese Annex, Lake Champlain Chocolate Store and the Cold Hollow Cider Mill just down the street. I always plug Dakin Farm, too. [www.dakinfarm.com] Loads of free samples at either of their stores. The branch store is close UVM.

The VT Teddy Bear tour is okay if you can stand bad puns. Very, very bad puns.

Tours of local breweries might interest the hockey crowd. Both Magic Hat and Vermont Pub and Brewery are in the Burlington area. They have set times for tours but will sometimes add a tour if you call ahead and have enough people.

In addition to downhill skiing, you can go cross-country skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, ice skating or dog-sledding. You can also rent snowmobiles up in Stowe, although it's a bit expensive.

Church St. Marketplace is in the middle of Burlington. It's a pedestrian mall like the Commons but loads better.

The movie about the 1980 Olympic team also opens that weekend. I can post info on local movie theaters if anyone is interested.

[Q]Is Bootless & Unhorsed still together?[/Q]

I don't know. After the demise of The Last Chance Saloon :`(, Bootless and Unhorsed used to play at Reuben James' (a.k.a RJ's) on Friday nights for a couple hours. Not the same. I think RJ's has gone hip-hop on the weekends. No more Irish drinking songs.

I'm planning on going to the games @ Colgate and @ RPI and Union. Is it better to get tickets through the Cornell ticket office or through the schools themselves? What I mean is, if I got tickets through the CU ticket office, are the seats on the side where Cornell attacks twice? Anyone have any idea (since I've never been up to the games at any of those 3 schools)? Thanks :-)

jy3,

yeah I got the colgate tickets from the cornell box office yesterday (Thurs.) afternoon at around 3:30, so perhaps they do indeed still have some. I also got RPI/Union tickets, so as of yesterday, they still had those as well.

I then walked over to Lynah and noticed that the team was finishing up practice; O'Byrne of all people won their end-of-practice breakaway competition! :-)

I'd like to go to Dartmouth/UVM -- I figure it's a nice way to spend my birthday, and it'll be one of my last chances to see some games before rehearsals start on the 23rd. Is anyone interested in arranging some sort of econo-room?

Is anyone driving from Ithaca or nearby to the Dartmouth/Vermont away games (or even to that region in the East where civilization lies) this weekend? Offering the usual: good company from a fellow faithful and paid gas and things.

My birthday is this weekend too! Although during my freshman year on my birthday, Cornell lost 11-0 to Yale, so it's not a very promising date. The following year however, they beat Princeton 8-4 at home, and I believe that was a good year for Princeton. So it remains to be seen what luck they will have in Hanover.

Myself + 1 will be there for Dartmouth/UVM. Since I'm also planning on doing RPI/Union already, it means the only games I will have missed this season will be the Yale/Princeton games and Everblades. The latter was never a possibility, but I could have stayed at home in New Jersey. Grr, stupid friends not wanting to go to the away games until it was too late...:-D

Careful on the roads tomorrow. The weather is going to be really nasty and we don't want any repeats of the Colgate travel experience (in so many ways.)

From the NWS...
Ithaca:
A WINTER STORM WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR LATE TONIGHT INTO FRIDAY. GENERAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS WILL RANGE FROM 1 TO 3 INCHES ACROSS NORTHEAST PENNSYLVANIA TO 3 TO 5 INCHES ACROSS UPSTATE NEW YORK BEFORE THE SNOW CHANGES TO SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN ON FRIDAY MORNING. THERE IS THE POSSIBILITY OF SIGNIFICANT ICING ACROSS THE REGION ON FRIDAY.

Hanover:
SNOW WILL OVERSPREAD NEW HAMPSHIRE BY FRIDAY AFTERNOON AND MOVE INTO WESTERN MAINE BY LATE IN THE DAY. FRIDAY NIGHT SNOW WILL CONTINUE IN THE MOUNTAINS AND FOOTHILLS OF MAINE AND NEW HAMPSHIRE WHILE SOUTHERN INTERIOR MAINE AND NEW HAMPSHIRE SEES A CHANGEOVER TO MIXED PRECIPITATION. ALONG THE COAST SNOW WILL CHANGEOVER TO RAIN AND POSSIBLY SOME FREEZING RAIN FRIDAY NIGHT. THE COMBINATION OF ACCUMULATING SNOW FOLLOWED BY SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN FRIDAY NIGHT WILL MAKE ROADS HAZARDOUS.

Burlington:
SNOW IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP ACROSS VERMONT AND NORTHERN NEW YORK ON FRIDAY...WITH 2 TO 4 INCHES OF SNOWFALL EXPECTED BY EARLY FRIDAY EVENING. THE SNOW IS EXPECTED TO MIX WITH OR CHANGE TO SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN FRIDAY NIGHT...AS WARM AIR ALOFT MOVES INTO THE REGION...WHILE TEMPERATURES AT THE SURFACE REMAIN BELOW FREEZING FRIDAY NIGHT. THERE IS STILL SOME UNCERTAINTY AS TO WHAT TYPE OF PRECIPITATION WILL OCCUR FRIDAY NIGHT...AS THIS IS DEPENDENT ON THE TRACK OF THE LOW PRESSURE AREA MOVING UP THE EAST COAST...BUT THERE IS THE POTENTIAL FOR A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF SNOW OR ICE.

Good advice from Christine. The storm is huge, causing snow in Ontario and severe thunderstorms in the Gulf of Mexico. It's also the same system that dropped a few tornadoes in Hawaii a couple of weekends ago. twitch

Would it really be a road trip to Burlington or Hanover (or a hockey road trip in general) without inclement weather? (Easy to say when I'm stuck on the left coast.)

Joking aside, stay safe everyone.

My plan is to leave the Hartford area at 2pm Friday, which should give us more than enough breathing room... probably going to leave Hanover at noon on Saturday to give us enough time to slide our way over to Burlington. If anyone needs a ride, I've got some extra room in my car (and would probably welcome the added weight ;-) ).

I dunno. Even being a native Syracusan, I wouldn't go out in this one. It's gonna get really ugly. Snow doesn't scare me, however the freezing rain predicted this afternoon should give one pause.

Just look at this map:

However, I do thing we should invade Rhode Island and steal their anti-snow weather machine. :-P

Despite the lousy forecast, my friends and I left Ithaca for Dartmouth around 12:15 on Friday, and it rained the whole way up, but the roads really weren't too bad until after the game. It snowed during the day on Saturday (which was good for the skiing **) ) but other than that we didn't see any more bad weather for the rest of the weekend. The faithful turnout was understandably small at Dartmouth, but I was glad to see more people made it to VT.

This weekend the boys looked to me more like the team I remember- they were passing better, and working the boards better. Gleed's goal on Saturday came off a beautiful pass from Cam Abbott, which was awesome to watch, especially sitting in the first row. All in all, I was satisfied! I'm glad we decided to make the trip after all. I can't ask for anything better than a 4 point weekend!

Let's Go Red!
