Cornell's first visit to Duluth in what's probably multiple years. Duluth has not looked all that great this year but they've played some good teams and are in the typically strong NCHC, so they could always re-emerge later in the year. Streaming is on NCHC's service like with the series at UND last year, so no use getting a ESPN+ subscription just yet

Cornell has in fact never played UMD at UMD - we played them in the Syracuse Invitational in 1968 (W 2-1), and the Florida Classic in 2005 (T 1-1). (We've played games at Duluth, but only against other opponents when the NCAA tournament was there - NoDak in the 1968 semi (L 1-3) and BC in the 1968 consy (W 6-1).)

The easiest thing to do is to purchase the day pass for $16.95 after the start of the game at 8 PM ET. The pass is good for access to any game within 24 hours after the purchase of the pass so one would have access to the game tomorrow, too. That's what I did with the UND series last season

...won't the 24-hour pass expire exactly 24 hours after you buy it, not after the completion of any game that happens to start within those 24 hours? The second NoDak game last year did start an hour earlier than the first - but were you able to watch the entire game?

SOG with 2 mins to play in the second are Cornell, 29-17.
When the other team's radio guy says Cornell is well-coached, sometimes you wonder if he's implying "amazing for an Ivy League school / for a team with so few high draft picks / for how good we think their players are." Okay, we'll take it.

Overall a terrific period. Outside of being pinned in our zone on their PP, we dominated and had several good opportunities in additional to O’Leary’s goal. Their goal was a fantastic snipe. I think we played more effectively behind the UMD net than at any time last season, and looked more like a vintage Cornell team. Maybe that’s what Schafer was referring to.
As an aside, quite the lame crowd for a program that has been the best in college hockey the last decade.

Right? I thought about going (6 hour drive for me), but we've maintained a good amount of COVID nerves, and I wasn't sure I wanted to do an indoor crowd.

Pretty close. UMD 3-2 in game 1. Cornell can't take advantage of a late PP.
UMD's seventh game, Cornell's first.
Cornell outshot UMD. Cornell got the first goal, came back to tie after UMD went up 2-1.
We can survive this loss. Do not want to be swept by a team that is now 3-4.

Oh well. We played a very good team (or what should be a very good team) even, if not more than that, on the road. I think we ran out of steam a little down the stretch, maybe our legs will get better as the season goes on. Also, injury hurts there, though that got both teams.
Go get 'em tomorrow.

Lines tonight were:
Berard - Seger - Malone
Donaldson - Andreev - Stienburg
Penney - Psenicka - O'Leary
Bancroft - Tupker - Wallace
Pairings:
Kempf - Malinski
Mitchell - Rego
Suda - Lagerstrom
Dirven (D) was the extra skater.
My 2 cents: Psenicka was our best forward, Mitchell our best D although I am starting to trust Rego. O'Leary was all but invisible other than that goal. Berard was everywhere, Malone was working hard. Andreev hardly made an impression which surprised me. Bancroft looks like some weird cross-pollination of Bâby and Steve Wilson. I liked Donaldson's effort but he seemed to be always chasing the play. Wallace was interesting and then he was hurt. The only weak spot was, to me, Lagerstrom. Suda I didn't notice unless he did something wrong, but I didn't notice him much so, um, good? Shane was good except Jesus fuck those rebounds.

At one pt shots were 16-13 Minn and then for about 15 min we totally dominated to go up like 30-16 until we won the draw cleared it around the boards and Minn got a one timer off to take back the lead.
After the first Cornell pretty much controlled the game for almost all the next 2 periods but MD was able to put home the 2 goals on quick shots without much puck control. Good effort but no win

Shane with a great save in the first minute. Guess he's got the job.

I *think* Thiessen was almost a Cornell commit before he went to Michigan. IIRC he was extremely highly touted, and now he's a backup after transfer.

This UMD announcer is excellent. There have been 5 or 6 marginal decisions in this game and he has been on Cornell's side in every case.

I believe he transferred from Maine. And are you perhaps thinking of Brad Thiessen, the former hot-shot goalie at Northeastern who we beat in the NCAA’s in 2010? That Thiessen chose Northeastern over Cornell.

2009. If not for that win in the regional semi setting up the Bemidji match in the final, I might not have ever met dss28 in person.

Video of the crazy bancroft move from Friday.
I made it so it plays full speed first, then replays at like 1/4 speed and then again at1/8 so you can see what he actually did.

Team played well enough for first 2 real games.. Duluth has talent. Dominated a large stretch of both games but didnt get much out of it..
Time will tell how scoring comes along.
Have to clean up the 2on1 PP goal and the break away goal that both game with possession on the other end. they really decided the game. Then add ot it the goal off the faceoff that we won the draw and cleared it around to MD that led to a goal..
Good thing the PK played well but the lack of PP goals kinda off set that.

Cornell's 1st 2 games vs. MD's 7th and 8th. I know, UND situation was same last year. Still, 6 more games means mid-season form for them, just out of the gate for us.

the ECAC would be better off to play league games and then try to get OC teams to play but who would go for that.

Tennis has fall and spring seasons, but other than that I'm pretty sure hockey has the longest NCAA regular season length. A lot of that is because of the long December break, though.

just comparing some sports
football starts in aug and plays sept - dec playing 12-15 games so 6-7 months
hockey starts in oct and plays thru march for the most part. playing 30+ for 6 months
Basketball starts in Oct and plays Nov thru March playing 30+ games for 6 months
baseball plays in the fall a few games but ramps up for real feb and plays feb thru june and plays 50-60 games for 5 months beyond the end of mosy school years.

Close enough for non-math majors.
The pros? Super Bowl 2022 was played Feb. 13. The first game was 9/9/21. So that's five months, plus pre-season.
