Morgan Barron with a 3rd period goal tonight (on a pass from Lowry), to put the Jets up 3-0 in their 4-0 win vs. the Blues. Morgan was the intermission guest between the 1st and 2nd period on the TSN broadcast where he was asked about his good chemistry with Lowry..jkahn

No mention of Joel in the interview. Joel is currently playing in German for a DEL-2 team (2nd division, I'm sure JTW can elaborate more on DEL-2 hockey). He's leading his team in scoring.Trotsky

As a Ranger fan, too bad Gallant is an imbecile and never gave him a real opportunity last year. The Rangers could use him this year for sure.
I was watching the replay of the Jets-Caps game the other day. Barron was getting a lot of ice time, including both on the power play and the PK.
Also, Riley Nash was playing with the Charlotte Checkers this past weekend.

Barron scored his third goal of the season last night in a loss to Las Vegas. As noted he’s getting lots of ice time, and is one of the regulars on the PK. Nice to see his pro career starting to take off.

Even better that he's not doing it for the Rangers.
Great for Barron and the Jets, but as a Rangers fan this is more evidence that Gerard Gallant is poison for young players.

Barron with an empty net shortie on the PK to seal Winnipeg’s 4-2 win over the Lightning last night. He’s settled in as an effective player on the Jets’ 3rd line and is one of the team’s key penalty killers. And a couple of days ago he won the Jets’ fastest skating competition, which is something considering the biggest knock on him coming out of Cornell was whether his skating was NHL quality.
Great for Barron and the Jets, but as a Rangers fan this is more evidence that Gerard Gallant is poison for young players.
Didn't Colin Greening win a fastest skater competition at an NHL all star game?
arugula
I also think GG is a meathead but not convinced of that take of him as poison for young players. Fox, Lindgren, Miller, Schneider, Chytil, Kakko all thriving. He’s also giving Blais a lot more chances than he’s earned and finally giving Gauthier and Kravtsov time. I wish Morgan got more of a shot with the Rangers but I think it’s more timing than a bias by GG. Barron is actually the type of player Gg and most coaches are biased in favor of-big, physical, good defensively with some offense thrown in.
I think GG makes it harder for young players to flourish. And as for Blais, Barron is turning into the player the Rangers thought they were trading for when they acquired Blais in that god-awful trade for Bucenevich

According to USCHO, there are 4 players on the Canadian and U.S. U18 teams committed to Cornell:
* Canada D Piper Grober
* U.S. G Annelies Bergmann
* U.S. D Rose Dwyer (younger sister of current D Grace, and another sister, Lucy, plays for the lacrosse team)
* U.S. F Lindzi Avar
Looks like Dwyer might be a Fall 2024 commit and the rest are Fall 2023.

[Governor Ron] DeSantis’ office was made aware of a diversity program the NHL runs to draw job talent from outside of its workforce, which is disproportionately white and male. DeSantis press secretary Bryan Griffin said the upcoming Pathway to Hockey Summit, which is set to take place in Fort Lauderdale on Feb. 2 during the NHL’s All-Star Game festivities, amounts to discrimination.
DeSantis’ office zeroed in on a new culprit in the anti-white culture war: the National Hockey League. Why? Because in a LinkedIn post, the NHL marketed the event specifically to people who are women, veterans, Black, Asian, Pacific Islander, Hispanic, Latino, Indigenous, LGBTQ or disabled.
According to Fox News, the NHL deleted its post from LinkedIn on Friday night, with a league spokesperson saying the Pathway to Hockey Summit is open to anyone 18 and older.

I wish they could find a way to honor the 2019-20 team for finishing the season #1 in the country. Obviously that wouldn’t fall under any of the existing categories of championships, so I’m not sure the best way.
I think winning the national championship this year would do the trick.

Here are the relevant bits for those looking to get around the paywall.
2. Sam Malinski, RHD, Cornell-ECAC: Malinski has been a top defenseman in college this season. He has excellent playmaking ability. He makes a lot of difficult passes in the offensive zone and has the ability to run a pro power play with his vision and shot. His skating is solid too and he can create with his skill and feet. Malinski isn’t the biggest defender but he competes well enough that I think he has a shot to be a good pro.
12. Travis Mitchell, LHD, Cornell-ECAC: Mitchell has played a large role for Cornell this season. The senior defenseman and team captain often lined up on both special teams. He’s a big-body defenseman who competes well and could be a solid pro defender. His skating is fine for his size but not a major selling point. Whether he can move pucks versus men will be Mitchell’s main challenge as I wouldn’t call him a natural offensive type.
Steinburg is also listed as a potential free agent.
Whatever people think of Pronman, (and I have mixed feelings) it's nice to see our guys get some love.
arugula
Interesting about Steinburg. Wonder whether that means he’s not interested in Colorado or vice versa.
I would imagine the injury has complicated Colorado's evaluation of him. If I were him Colorado is a good spot to be. There's going to be some turnover in that bottom 6 and with an expensive core locked up they'll need cheap ELCs to fill the depth.

Barron with a goal and an assist so far tonight, nice to see as he hadn’t had any points in a while before now.

Seriously though, kind of the inverse of your point, as a Rangers fan, it took me a while to warm up to Fox. Helps that he's great, local, and seems like a very decent guy. I don't recall being all that impressed with him at Sucks, but then I tried not to watch too much and we were pretty pretty good then. I hope Travis is traded from the Isles so I don't have to root against him.
Unless you hate the Bridgeport Islanders, I doubt you’ll have to worry about it. Hope I’m wrong though!

Today, most players who are drafted or who develop into NHL caliber players when they start at Cornell plan their academic calendar in anticipation of leaving early. It is much easier than ever before to structure your senior year so even if you sign with a team, you can graduate with your class, or at worst, get a degree in August. Players will set up a schedule so that they only need to take 12 credits in the spring [the minimum required to be a full-time student eligible to compete]. They will be upfront with faculty about their situation and avoid classes where a professor might not be flexible about giving an incomplete and allowing work to be made up later. They might take a bunch of one and two-credit classes that meet in the first half of the semester. They will do independent study and/or take courses with recorded lectures or other mechanisms to ease the effect of missing classes. They avoid courses where attendance is required or seminars where in-class participation is a significant part of the grade. Once they sign a contract, their NCAA eligibility ends so no one cares whether they take incompletes and submit missed work at some later date.
Among the players who took this route was at least one who won the ECAC academic achievement award.

Since the ECAC Hockey Student-Athlete of the Year award was initiated in 2007, four Cornellians have won it — Colin Greening, 2009-10; Keir Ross, 2011-12; Andy Iles, 2013-14; and Kyle Betts, 2020-21. The only other school with as many as four players honored is Union.
