It looks like they built a new arena in Füssen since I watched a game there in 1977. I guess that I should not be surprised since that rink was open on one end.

Is Füssen the town near Neuschwanstein? I have vague memories of driving an insane mountain road to get there but it was almost 20 years ago.

Yes. That is why I was staying there. There were signs up that there was hockey game being played in the evening, so I decided to go. The local team was playing a team from Italy. I was shocked to find out that recent RPI grad Dino Serra was on the Italian team. News of former players didn't get around in 1977 as it does now. :-)

I don't recall roads around Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, but you must be right. I do remember a few days earlier visiting a schoolmate of my mother who was living in the vicinity of Bad Tölz and he drove me up a winding alpine road at some ridiculous speed. I didn’t think that I would survive that trip.

I think that this is getting a bit off topic.:-D

Can anybody explain to me the rationale for giving Matt ROTW instead of GOTW, which they gave to Brey, who had a less impressive performance than Matt against weaker competition? Were there really no other rookies among the twelve teams who had a weekend of notable achievement?

It's the spread the wealth thing they do. Like when a goalie wins POTW... and doesn't win GOTW.

I dunno, but here's my guess. Matt got GOTW the previous week, when he gave up 0 goals. This past weekend he gave up 1. So he set the bar too high for himself.

OTOH, Brey made 90 saves over the weekend and SLU won both games (Galajda made 62 saves), including a shutout against Yale (something we haven't done this season -- yet!). In a world where every kid gets a trophy, the ECAC realized that this may be the only chance to give SLU's goalie an award. These were the only two league games SLU has won so far this season. And it wouldn't matter if he made 200 saves in an upcoming weekend if the team lost, because it's even harder to justify giving the award to a losing goalie.

That latter argument makes a lot more sense to me. I didn't realize those numbers came from a 90-save weekend.

Galajda named both Ivy Player of the Year and Ivy Rookie of the Year, and Schafer named Coach of the Year. Kaldis first-team All-Ivy, with Angelo and McRae on second team. Quite a day for the Big Red!

But it's pretty amazing he's not a unanimous selection for All Ivy 1st team. I haven't found Ivy-only statistics, and I'm too lazy to break them out for myself. But USCHO reports Harvard has scored 88 goals this season, and Donato has scored 22 goals. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's 25%, isn't it?

Donato is 2nd in the ECAC in goals and 8th in total points. In contrast, Anthony Angelo is 8th and tied for 12th respectively.

Maybe he missed a bunch of Ivy hockey for the Olympics. If he missed four games and wasn't THAT amazing in the other six, maybe?

Of Harvard's 29 goals scored against Ivy opponents I counted 6 goals and 5 assists for Donato. Impressive but not quite as impressive as his overall scoring dominance.

Hmm. Turning those into Hobey hat tricks so they have something to talk about. All it really does is disappoint 67% of the finalists. I think they should just name the winner.

Except coach. I want to see Rand Pecknold's butthurt.

Schafer finalist for ECAC COTY, along with Casey Jones (and Rick Bennett).

Okay so the way they do the Hobey selection now has infected its way down to the league awards now. Coach of the Year “finalist?” You know how many Finalists there are? There are twelve. And we usually can tell right away who the top 2 or 3 are just by glancing at the standings and sometimes the pre-season polls; we don’t need special Finalist recognition. Just announce the damn awards like the Ivy League still does. Can the pomp.

While I’m at it, now the stupidly-named Richter award (he never had any real success in his two collegiate seasons before bolting) gets a list of “semi-finalists?” Is this a tournament? Do the semifinalists get to go one-on-one to see who elevated to all-vaunted “Finalist?” Will the losers get roses and depart the crease to a ballad? Jebus. The award will be between Galajda, Point, and Morris, with Kielly and Primeau as dark-horses.

10 --> 3 --> 1 seems OK to me for national awards for ROTY, POTY, forwards and defensemen. There are a shit ton of them, so why not?

For GOTY and COTY, to maintain the same level of quality you'd need to contract the 10 to 5, but 5 --> 3 is dumb, so they should just have 3 --> 1.

I think the Hobey 10 --> 3 --> 1 progression is actually pretty cool, and I will challenge you to a curmudgeon contest any day.

Schafer should win but he has 3 already and Casey is a really good guy, so he may take it.

ROTY: they're all really great candidates. It's funny for a soft year for the conference we also had an influx of great players.

Plus, it's pretty silly to penalize a coach for his team having high expectations heading into the season, which is usually a product of recent/sustained success under that same coach...but I agree with you the voters for these CotY awards do seem to base their votes almost entirely on expectations vs. results.

Not necessarily. Mike won in 2003 with a team predicted to win the ECACs.

Here is the table of improvement against the Coaches' poll.

+4 Union
+2 Cornell
-1 Clarkson

Typical Bearlover- you love statistics, why not read some?

Tufto leads all freshman nationally in PPG and total points (1.14ppg), and he plays on a mediocre team. Yet Galadja, plays for one of the best teams in the country, and Cornell gives up the fewest shots/game in the country (which ought to translate to Galadja seeing more clean shot attempts that are easier looks for him).

It's an easy win?

Different take. Galajda has glitzy numbers because he's playing behind the #1 defense in the country. Donato has glitzy numbers because he's scored over 25% of his team's goals. So how to think about this?

Galajda: Do you penalize a player because he's playing on a great team? Without him, chances are Cornell is still going to the NCAA's but with a lower seed.

Donato: The fact that he's a skater w/26 goals and the next-highest goal scorer on the team has 10 goals, says Donato is transcending his team. Without him, Harvard would be playing golf today.

Galajda's stats are literally not materially better than Stewart's. Take a look at the difference between Colton Point and his backups and tell me that Galajda is the MVP.

Besides, Galadja is only a freshman, part of an impactful freshmen class, with many of the most productive upperclassmen coming back next year. So chances are he'll have the chance to win the award in the near future. Donato, on the other hand, might be going pro at the end of this season. So the committee would want to give him his trophy now.

Well, if he wins it maybe he'll piss off to the Bruins.

Gotta think that one's going to Donato since they already gave Galajda an award, especially with Sucks making it to Placid.
Also with Donato being the best player in the conference.
I think he is the best. But it's a very good look for the conference to name an American Olympic hero from Harvard as the face of the conference.

That's really the most likely argument, IMO.

Here's another point. All signs point to Donato being very successful as a pro. Imagine him getting to the NHL HOF, but the committee passed him over for what may be a 1-season, flash-in-the-pan freshman. I hope this is not how Galadja turns out, but there's always the chance. If you're the committee, wouldn't you cover your bets?

It's not the committee's job to take any of these things into account--their job is to choose the best player in the ECAC this year, period.

While true, committees like this play those games all the time, especially when there is nothing at stake. You know the expression that the most vicious battles are over corner offices.

Take a look at the complete list of ECAC Hobey winners. It's not an accident.

Yep. Vesey got the Hobey as a "Career Achievement Award," as his Junior season was better, and there were better players the year he won.

ECAC awards notoriously favor upperclassmen, and it's more difficult for Goaltenders to win Player of the Year awards, especially against high-scoring candidates. After last night, he leads the nation in GPG. It's going to be Donato Jr, and it's well deserved.

Having been on the Committee -- and voted for a non-winner all 3 times -- I can tell you that most people on it vote for dumb reasons (actually, most people anywhere on anything vote for dumb reasons) ... But it's not necessarily conscious and calculated like this.

I will also say that, while true Vesey may have won because of that sentiment (subconsciously) I still think you could construct a pretty good argument for him being the best player his senior year. And I made that argument, but then chickened out and named Kyle Connor our CHN POTY anyway. Connor would've been the second straight freshman to win. And the best player in college hockey last year was Clayton Keller, another freshman, and he wasn't even among the finalists.

I've always wanted to create a Lifetime Achievement Award and add it to the mix of what takes place annually (a la the Richter Award, which was an invention of a magazine in Minnesota) - but I don't have enough time or money to give it the proper attention/traction it needs.

Oh, come on. Where's the proof of that?

Coach Schafer has won COTY every time Cornell has finished first in the ECAC during his tenure.

Hope he wins it again next year :-)

We are really lucky Mike is a Cornellian. If he were a mercenary coach, like many are, he'd have long gone by now. Instead, we have consistency and stability. This season he's shown that he can change with the game, and still excell.

Well done, Mike!

Keep Cornell Great!
