Not every night you see this: a too-many-men call with eight skaters caught on the ice. Islanders at Devils, Islanders' Tavares-Moulson line is slow getting off ice with 1:30 to play and next line is on too quick, Islanders whistled for too many men. Islanders still win 5-4 on their own PPG in OT. Moulson got a goal (4th) and also was the victim of the OT cross-check that led to the Islanders' winning PP.

I saw that. I haven't even seen that many skaters on the ice in my boys' youth hockey games. Tavares is a beast and Moulson is playing well. Not sure if it's too soon to say anything but the Islanders look much improved......

It's way too early. The pp looks great and the offense is a wonder, but the defense is having troubles and we are always one Nabokov away from the endless torment that is DP.

It's great to see Matt playing well, and playing with such a perfect linemate.

The lockout helps them. Late-October to November has period the last couple seasons where they decide not to win any games.

Because of the upcoming Ragnaraugh or Harbaugeddon or Super Baugh or whatever you want to call the Harbaugh brothers coaching against each other on Sunday, Ken Dryden wrote about playing against his brother in the NHL.

Don Cherry gave props to Moulson and Tavares during Hockey Night in Canada last night as the reason the Islanders are winning this year. He then showed some examples of Moulson scoring goals because he keeps his stick on the ice, saying that most players would have it in the air on those plays. Cherry later mentioned chatting with Moulson's dad recently at a midget skate.

Sunday's Devils broadcast of the Devils-Islanders (scoreless for 56:05 then 3-0 Devils final, Matt Moulson +/-0), there was a mention that Moulson was drafted 263rd in 2003 and only 16 or 17 players drafted higher have scored more from that class.

He's 18th in terms of goals scored and 28th in terms of total points for the 2003 draft. Those ahead of him have played far more games as well. 2003 NHL Draft

You can click on goals or points at the top of the page to sort.......Stempniak and Pavelski also are nice "value" picks from the 2003 draft.

His HockeyDB page doesn't list a current team and he doesn't show up as on anyone's roster in the AHL, ECHL, or CHL. He might be playing in Europe; the HockeyDB player pages don't get updated as regularly for guys playing over there.

Brendon Nash Tweet: In their third AHL season, brothers Riley and Brendon Nash are finally set to go head-to-head for first time. Story: [gocheckers.com]

Charlotte Checkers
Even though they’ve spent the past three seasons in the same league, brothers Riley and Brendon Nash weren’t sure they would ever get the opportunity they’ll get this weekend.

For the first time, the two will go head-to-head when Brendon’s San Antonio Rampage visit Riley’s Checkers for games on Saturday and Sunday [2/10, 2/11]. Those meetings will not only mark the first time they’ve crossed paths in the AHL, but the first time they’ve played a competitive game against each other at any level.

It will be completely new experience for the two, who are much more accustomed to playing together, as they did for three seasons at Cornell University from 2007 to 2010.

Q should draw because they are kicking so much ass during the RS -- that bandwagon must be getting full.

Princeton might have been OK (this is the best they're ever going to get for a site), but they have no prior years to build on and first timers are usually weak.

If Harvard made a run and upset Q in the QF and we didn't make it, that would be the Perfect Storm of impossible location and poor traveling bases. There'd be more people in the Ducktown Tavern than the stands.

Thanks, that is what I suspected, though I was hoping it was for "flu-like symptoms" or other temporary illness. I know he hasn't been lighting it up on the scoreboard, but it seems like he was holding his own defensively (+3, FWIW).

From the Hurricanes site at 2:00 PM today, Forward Jeff Skinner is out with an upper body injury and won't play Monday.

Andreas Nodl skated in Skinner’s place on the second line in Saturday’s practice, but Muller said that’s not how the combinations will shake out on Monday. Already carrying an extra forward, the team has a few options, a recall from Charlotte still being one of them.

Does anyone know why Colin Greening wasn't in the lineup for the Sens tonight? I saw that the Sens recalled 3 players from Binghamton, but didn't mention if anyone got sent down in return. Just curious. Thanks.

Thanks, that is what I suspected, though I was hoping it was for "flu-like symptoms" or other temporary illness. I know he hasn't been lighting it up on the scoreboard, but it seems like he was holding his own defensively (+3, FWIW).

Just tuned into the audio of the NJ-OTT game and before even looking at the boxscore, I learned that Greening is in the line-up, but was on the ice for NJ's goal early in the 1st (something about clearing attempt taking a bad bounce off a senator skate.....). Afternoon hockey due to the president's day holiday (but not a holiday for me :().

What is this President's Day thing you speak of? I think the last time I had that day off was in high school.

Ooops. According to the Federal Government, today they are honoring WASHINGTON'S birthday. However, my archaic daily planner (the "app" for my dumb phone) says it is President's day, and your local government can call today whatever it wants and of course your employer can say "Yeah, it is Monday February 18th, and yes, you are expected to show up for work".

Obligatory Hockey content:
Sens win 2-1 in a shootout.

Ryan O'Byrne is a +1, no points and over 19 minutes of ice in a goal deluge (especially from a Sens fan perspective).. 6-4 Avs with ~ 5 minutes left.

I get to deal with the fun case where my employer expects me to show up for work but my government customers do not.

Ben Scrivens gets a nice 3-0 shutout up the road (to me) in Sunrise Florida.

Riley Nash was a -1 in a 3-0 loss in Montreal. He had just over 12 minutes of ice time.

What you're forgetting is that the Islanders AHL affiliate is stocked with the type of talent that would be in the ECHL in any other organization.

Sean Collins got a solid 15:31 of ice time in his NHL debut, a 3-2 loss for the Blue Jackets against Anaheim.

Another cool thing to note was that out of 7 NHL games last night, Cornell alums played in 6 of them.

The Blue Jackets' beat reporter for the Columbus Dispatch wrote in his postgame blog entry:
Aaron Portzline
Sean Collins made his NHL debut, playing left wing on a line with Brassard and Umberger. Collins and Umberger won a ton of pucks. Umberger and Brassard each had five shots on goal, tied for the game-high. Collins played 15:31 over 22 shifts and got rave reviews after the game.

Ben Scrivens's hot streak came to an end tonight against Tampa Bay when he was pulled after giving up 4 goals on 13 shots including a big-time softie from Harvard alum, Alex Killorn.

Murray threw a couple of big hits against the Blues tonight, but also took a hard hit behind his own net and skated around gingerly for a while. Sharks won 2-1, for their first win since January.

Also, Collins was a healthy scratch tonight.

Current tally (AFAIK) for alumni on an NHL roster this year is 7:

Murray, SJ
Moulson, NYI
O'Byrne, Col
Greening, Ott
Scrivens, Tor
R. Nash, Car
Collins, Cmb

Any others?

So his NHL career could end on a boarding penalty and suspension?
