OK for fun here. And no I'm not suggesting we actually get these 2 guys in the ring.

Who would win in a fight?

In the left hand corner we have
Stephen Bâby weighing in at 235 lbs standing at 6-5.

In the right hand corner we have
Doug Murray weighing in at 240 lbs standing at 6-3.

Bâby may have a slight reach and height advantage but Murray may be able to take a few more punches.

Bâby on the other hand is from Chicago - Dougie from hails from Sweden via Long Island.

My take - who's in Bâby's corner none other than Coach Ditka - so the advantage has to go to Bâby.

The winner in a 10th round KO. BABY!

Mo

Once again Mo, you got me laughing. I'm gonna have to go with Bâby also. I heard he had some nasty fights out on the ice back playing in Green Bay. Word is the kid knows how to toss the Coopers. Would be very interesting to say the least!

Best,

A possible boxing match fund-raiser? It may not be as popular as a Manute Bol v. Shawn Bradley boxing match but I'd pay to go see our two stars go at it!

Ah yes, The infamous drunken wrestling matches, An event I will never forget. laugh I am not sure if Bâby and Ryan went at it or not. I do remember some of the matchs though. Too funny.

The Bâby vs Vesce match did happen on Slope Day. Classic match of Bâby not wanting to get taken down by a slightly smaller Vesce. I'm sure there were lots of laughs (and beers) that day.

Best,
Ogie

Ogie,

Call me ignorant - but what is Slope Day?

Well, Krzysztof Wieckowski and his urine soaked pants was good for a laugh too....

Slope Day.... From what I remember, and I don't seem to remember much from Slope Day, it is when on the last day of class everyone get drunk on Libe Slope. Usually 5000-6000 people. It is quite cool. As long as the weather is nice. Which seemed to alternate every year when I was there.

It's what we old fogies used to call "Springfest". B-]

IIRC, when the administration tried to ban Springfest (or move it, like it did my freshman year when the Del Fuegos played to mostly empty fields on North Campus), some students organized "Take Back the Slope Day" and showed up at the Slope anyway. The administration then took the view that if you can't beat 'em, regulate 'em and allowed "Slope Day", but started imposing all sorts of rules.

It was still called SpringFest when I left in 1991. When I was there, the administration had learned that trying to ban SpringFest and having no official activities meant there was nothing for students to do but drink and the incidence of alcohol poisoning was worse. My freshman or sophomore year they tried to provide alternate activities on North and West Campus called "Spring Mania and Finals Fest". (I remember in particular a rather entertaining Waiters concert in the Balch Arch.) By my junior or senior year, they were working with students to provide entertainment on the Slope (the Toasters and the Feelies) so people would have more do that just drink. Unfortunately, that year it rained and they had to move the entertainment into Barton, and while they could reasonably "not notice" the presence of alcohol outside on the slope, they couldn't very well let people in with booze, so the concert was a flop and everyone just drank in the rain. So back to the drawing board. Anyway, this seems like the sort of thing (like Dragon Day) destined to ebb and flow; some years the administration will try to stamp it out, others they will work with student groups to try to make it less problematic. (I was never a big fan of SpringFest myself, since I was working in the Phonetics Lab in Morrill that day freshman year and we had to keep drunks from coming into the building to pee. Between that and only seeing half of the Dragon parade, I learned not to schedule Friday afternoon work study hours in the Spring.)
