Not including the official alumni pep rally thing, are people planning on heading to one particular place around the MSG area before next Saturday's BU game?

I don't have concrete plans as I'm playing with an alumni Cornell side at the New York Sevens rugby tournament on Randall's Island during the day, but if my group gets organized after the tourny we may head to a bar called Stout on 33rd between 6th and 7th. Very large bar, pretty good food, great beer selection (as one might infer from the name). It's not a homey local dive, but it's a nice spot and could fit a large number of loud Faithful.

Agreed, Stout is good.

I was actually trying not to mention it so it wouldn't get too crowded. cuss

Anyone going to the Rangers-Stars game on Sunday afternoon? I'm pretty excited for an all-hockey weekend.

I've never seen the Rangers play at home, so this should be a great weekend.

Arena – Lynah is great, but it sometimes feels like it is going to fall down. Agganis Arena, on the other hand, was built in 2005 and is state-of-the-art. Apparently, even though it is new, it has not lost any of the charm of B.U.’s old rink. Advantage: B.U.

In fact, the only charm Agganis has is that it somehow managed to dodge the prohibition on alcohol at NCAA events. Why they were allowed to transfer the grandfathered alcohol license from Walter Brown to a new arena is beyond my understanding, unless of course there was some money involved.

I thought the alcohol restriction (for non NC$$ tournament events) was with respect to whether or not the facility is a "school building". Is the Carrier Dome "technically" owned by Syracuse University? I think the Badgers play their home games at the Kohl Center, which is "private", thus they are able to sell beer at the games. Same thing when the UCONN Huskies basketball .. when they play a game at the Hartford Civic Center, you can buy beer (at least this was true in the mid-90's), but not when the games were on campus at Gampel. Has anyone been to a Husky football game at Rentschler Field in East Hartford; can you buy beer at those games?

Well I don't know if it's "technically" owned by SU , but they own it and you can buy beer except at NCAA events.

I didn't buy them, rocky did. I'm pretty sure he picked them up within a week or two of them going on sale and he got them at the MSG box office though.

Edit: I'm guessing no one really knows, but will the benches/shooting direction end up being BU sitting where the Rangers usually sit since they are the "home" team?

420 with 9 present and future Cornellians.

... for would-be Cornellians living in the metro New York City area, this game is an awesome plus to the benefits of Cornell. If you figure Wednesday evening to Saturday midday is plenty enough time to spend with your family ... and you need to get out of the house before you go freaking insane around the parents ... the game is an excellent reason to be out on your own and not having over the aunt, uncle, and goofy cousins for leftover turkey.

Hey Jason or whoever may know,

Where are the bands going to be? Looks like BU will have seven tubas in their vertically striped ranks! [www.bu.edu]

Because this is not an NCAA game with it's annoying ads, gotta assume they'll actually let the bands play saturday which will be nice.

I'm also curious if, because this is a BU "home" game, we'll hear the BU PA announcer and his annoying "let's play hockey!" thing.

The Molly Wee Pub is excellent for pregame. It's rather small but they serve pretty quickly and the beer selection is very good.

Basic grub including several items of Irish fare.

Both Mustang Sally and Mustang Harry are decent if slightly overpriced for what they are, which is commercial sports pubs. Sometimes I prefer just to get a slice, a burger, or a frank across the street - can't beat a few Nathan's dogs for the price of a single MSG dog.

What if maybe we'd prefer a place that wasn't sports/pub themed? < ducks >

Not sure if that's the case or not, but going with family, maybe a different genre would be better.

To second RichS, Molly Wee is pretty nice, especially for a pub. However, it is rather small, so make sure to be early, particularly if you're with a decently-sized group.

South side of the street. Seafood, Shepherd's pie, Steaks. Reasonable prices, usually not too jammed up.

Could someone who has been there, perhaps before the Red Hot game, give me a quick review?

I've never been there but am considering going (with a fellow Golden Knight alum, of course!) before the Rangers' game on 12/30.

A comparison between Stout and The Molly Wee, which I'm very familar with, would be helpful.

Thanks!

180 from the Molly Wee. Huge place, but gets crowded after work and before games. If you have a party more than 2, and want to eat, I would definitely make a reservation. Pretty good draught beer selection (approx 25, maybe a few more) with a lot of my favorites plus an impressive variety of bottled beers. Food is good if not spectacular and I've mainly gone with one of their several different burger choices.

A plus for people on this board, they were showing the Maine-UNH game last night before the Ranger game. Also they usually have Setanta Sports on for those who are into European soccer and rugby.

Thanks! On a Sunday at 5 PM, it shouldn't be as crowded so maybe we'll try it.

Any place that shows college hockey is worthy of at least one visit. :-D

Bear in mind that there will be three NFL games going on at 5pm on Sunday 12/30 (though no marquee matchups).

Thanks. That's not a problem. The NFL is but a mere pleasant diversion when I'm having a bite and a beer with a buddy before a Rangers' game.

And as he quickly pointed out after glancing at their beer menu, they have Stella Artois on tap. Cool!

Not quite the phrase I'd use to describe Stella, but maybe that's just my Belgian side being snobbish :-}... That said, I would kill for a chance to have some Saranac out here on the west coast. drunk

Well, I'd pay someone real money (really!) to ship me a Stone Double Bastard, because evidently they haven't made it to the east coast this year. cuss

I think his point was that a bar with sports-loving customers may not be the best place for a pleasant diversion on a football Sunday (unless you are into the football).

I think that anyone who is an avid hockey fan can certainly tolerate the "diversion" of NFL football.

After all, it is a sports bar, at least in some respects.

STOUT was packed when my wife and I got there before the NYR game on Wednesday but I get another shot on Sunday with my Stella Artois-loving buddy.

"Cool" or not, he was thrilled to hear that Stella is poured at MSG as well.
